Few suggestions: Not sure if you did but it’s defo a good idea to wipe the chain down with a micro fibre cloth before putting it in the boiling water. I don’t think leaving it in the water for 30 min will do much, especially since the water will be too cool to melt any wax by that time. 5 min should be plenty. I’d probably give the chain another good rinse or two with clean water, maybe even an alcohol rinse before putting it in the wax. Don’t want any remaining dish washing liquid on there when you dip it.
Thanks for the tips… I normally wipe it down after every other ride, depending on the bike. The reason I let it set was so allow the stripped wax and dirt to solidify as it cooled, and that seems to keep it from attaching to the chain again when removing it. Still probably not really needed, but just something I was doing because it made sense in my head.
I can between the hot waxing. Every 150ish miles I use their Super Secret chain coating. It’s technically a waxing I guess, but I am not removing and dipping in hot wax for several thousand miles.
Thanks! I do take the pins out and lube them up with some Park Tool grease from time to time, but not as often as I do the chain, which probably isn’t as often as I should.
Don’t you get wax all over your floor on the trainer? I also can’t understand how videos on YT always show cleanish waxed chains before re-waxing them. Mine is always almost black and gunky, and so are my rear cassette haha
I do get the wax shavings on my mat under my trainer but are easily vacuumed up with a shop vac. Since I have switched over to waxing, I have not had any black gunky build up on any of my bikes. Can I ask what brand of wax you are using?
too complicated, i can clean and rewax chain on bike in 6 minutes by using wax stick , old towel and inductive heater, btw how did you remove water from chain , because if is left any molecule, chain will rust, i have problem to dry chain after rainy drive
I have found that both denatured alcohol and putting it in front of a fan seems to get the chain dry as well as dropping it in the hot wax. The wax gets to temps above boiling and will steam off any extra water left in the chain. No evidence of rust or excessive chain wear due to rust in the year or so doing this.
