Hi, I’m Caroline Beste of the Tao of Horsemanship. This month’s Holistic Horse “Ask the Expert” Q&A is about riding bit-less with control and safety. This month’s viewer asks “I have been practicing natural horsemanship exercises on the ground with my horse and I would like to take that connection to riding in the halter and lead. I’m not sure how to begin and will I have the control and safety I’m use to when riding with a bit?”
Yes! You can have just as much safety with a rope halter and lead rope as you can with a bit. Safety and control are as much about technique as they are about training. The biggest mistake most horse owners make is they think technique will save them. Sometimes it does and I’ve ridden many a horse that knew how to bend to a stop, immediately and from a canter. And, when they felt threatened, scared, their prey instincts kicked in and took over. The level of adrenaline out-weighed any and all technique. And, I’ve worked with horses long enough to instill a solid foundation of knowledge, education and relationship. This is what has saved us and prevented accidents. In the end, it is the mindset of your horse and the level of emotional and mental engagement that keeps them tuned into you and on a powerful level. Friendship, love and partnership - willing cooperation, are the keys to riding bit-less, bareback and bridle-less with control and safety.
This video covers 5 main techniques to developing, and improving, body control and safety. It also discusses the level and quality of training necessary to ride bit-less and/or bareback with control and safety.
The following 5 areas, and techniques, are discussed. The order of each is important as they are designed to be building blocks for the next to follow.
1) Mounting: The quality of your mounting is in your mount Does your horse stand still? Are they relaxed yet attentive?
The importance and value of CONTACT: This is where you teach your hands to ask your horse to follow a ‘feel” and/or a contact - not fight it. And, where your horse learns to accept the contact, become responsive and relaxed, not stressed, resistant, defensive.
2) Vertical Flexion: Is about asking your horse to “break” at their pole and shoulders/wither area. This aids in softening and relaxing your horse’s topline so that their movement is fluid, smooth.
3) Lateral Flexion: Is about asking your horse to “break” at the pole FIRST, then the middle of the neck. Breaking at the pole aids in softening and relaxing your horse’s topline and both aid in developing the “bend to a stop” or “emergency stop.”
4) Back up: You need a good mount and responsive and relaxed flexion for the back up to be effortless - without tension, resistance.
5) Hind-end Control - Disengaging the hind end: This technique takes the power away from your horse’s “engine” and/or hind legs.

Bitless riding is a great way to gain trust , understanding and team work without the pain and discomfort from bits . I am over the moon that you recommend this way of riding that has so many postive attributes and can be easierly taught to any horse of any experience or disapline. I believe that no matter how people try to justify using a bit because they believe that is to be less intrusive or painless on a horses mouth that is totally untrue and even rubber bits cause discomfort and damage . Some people will argue that their horse is head strong or uncontrollable and needs a harsher bit to control their horses behavior is just poor horsemanship used by lazy people who want the quick an easier way out to solve their problems that was most likely caused by human error in the first place . Caroline I am so happy that you are introduced this kind of natural horsemanship to all of the equine disaplines and I will be looking forward to watching more of your videos .

Kylie Wilson if you get the correct bit and use it well it will be fine, riding bit less can cause severe knots and can actually break the nose, if you watch a video of a horse skull you can really see how thin the nose is and can actually break as well, I don't think bits are bad as long as you use them correctly, a lot of people that say bits are bad don't realise how bad bit less can actually be and the amount of damage it can cause! The position she has the nose band at is way too low, I can see that it is on a very thin piece of bone and just a little bit too much pressure, the horse's nose will snap! Please do not assume that all bits are bad when bit less can be just as bad, if not worse!
@LincolnTheLabrador
@LincolnTheLabrador 7 лет назад
Lark LuvsHorses But with bit less you have to position it very high up on the nose, it still causes knots of tissue to form, and if you use bits correctly, they don't mind!

I went bitless with my Percheron/Standardbred gelding. He goes in a leather side pull with no leverage and he loves it. I tried it on impulse by clipping reins to his leather halter and I got this completely relaxed, sensitive to the aids, responsive horse. It was so amazing that I hacked out on my bareback pad and his halter. We are sold!

Hi Lorraine and Welcome! I do not like bit-less bridles or side pulls. They tend to pull to much to one side and not release well. I recommend both the stop-n-turn (piece that replaces the bit and works with any headstall) and bosal.

Hi Beretta and Welcome! I appreciate your concern and please pay attention to my video and it's purpose. So often people like you comment out of emotion and not fact. You all also use platforms like mine to voice your opinions as well as make stupid statements such as yours when I've already told you over and over in this video what I prefer and how to use certain pieces of equipment. As I've stated throughout this video, I am educating people not necessarily recommending. I use rope halters mostly and soft leather bitless bridles. Because so many people use the stop-n-turns I wanted to talk about them in this video as they are very harsh, as I explain, and only if not used correctly, meaning they fit too small or the rider's hands are quick and unforgiving. I hope you've spent just as much time on the horse trainers out there that are truly cruel and harsh.

Hi Caroline, I did not want to discuss my opinion in a public forum, but I just looked up stop and turn hackamores and was shocked. Those are the harshest bitless devices I have ever seen. Are you aware that for every inch of shank the pressure exponentially increases. This means with a 1 inch shank ( like a small S hackamore) 1 pound of pull from the hand equals 10 pounds on the jaw and nose of the horse. With a 2 inch shank 1 lbs of hand pressure equals 100 pounds on the jaw and nose. 3 inch shanks can easily break cartilage and fracture bone in the wrong hands. I'm not saying no one should use them obviously you are concious of pressure, your horse, and have a soft hand. What bothers me is that a novice could do serious damage to their horse while being under the impression that they are using "kinder" bitless option. And although I am fully anti bit it is much harder to do damage with a snaffle in a novice hand than with a harsh shanked hackamore with a solid bar under the jaw. The novice should at least be made aware of the intense power in their hand with a device like that. With that being said don't you find that training for trust and responsiveness and acheiving a reasonable level of both removes the need for such a potentially harsh and pain motivated device? Still a huge fan of your process, Namaste, Jan
@TaoofHorsemanship
@TaoofHorsemanship 7 лет назад
Hi Jan! Your question is great and brings more awareness to selecting bitless equipment and understanding each pieces purpose. I do mention in my video, and in other free training videos where I use the stop n turn, that it is a harsh piece of equipment if used incorrectly. I also mention that I only use it for finesse and when the horse is both balanced and able to collect. It is not a training device and must be introduced when the horse is at a certain level in their education, training and again balanced and collected. To answer your question about: "With that being said don't you find that training for trust and responsiveness and acheiving a reasonable level of both removes the need for such a potentially harsh and pain motivated device?" I do train with trust, awareness, gentleness and develop the level of responsiveness in my horses with a rope halter and lead rope first. Again, I talk about this and demonstrate this in the video. Thanks again Jan for allowing us to further discuss the stop n turn! Warmly, Caroline

John Galbreath - I think it is all about training. I have seen people ride a reining event with no bridle at all, including a slide. And do a jump course. If you think you need a harsher bit to stop your horse you may stop and think about doing some more training using your seat and other signals.
@wisepati123
@wisepati123 6 лет назад
Jan, I looked it up as well. Basically a mechanical hackamore. Lots of leverage and a narrow noseband. I don't see the use for it as you can't plow rein with it at all but I see people using it to start horses which I do not understand. If the horse pushes through, then I would think there needs to be more training and working with the horse to be more sensitive if you can. I really really do NOT like mechanical hackamore's and even if they are 'bitless', they are more like a curb bit.

Love this video! I work for an NPO that retrains and rehomes ex race horses. All of them are retrained bitless and they listen better than any horse with a bit/harsh bit. Control isn’t about constant pressure or discomfort in a horse’s mouth, it’s about a communicative partnership between you and the horse. Love this video! A little note though, the noseband of the rope halter is sitting a bit too low and is putting pressure on the wrong part of the horse’s face. I know this video is old, but still noteworthy :)

Why bareback? A well fitted saddle is made to distribute pressure evenly over the horses back and make them more comfortable. It's also important for beginner riders, both for safety and comfort of the horse.

@@Rachel-ge3gl Hi Rachel, for me personally..I can feel what the horse is doing or potentially going to do. When they tense up for example for whatever reason. Those darn horse eating plastic bags that blow by for one. Anyway a well made bareback pad is a plus too. My balance and seat much improved as a result of going bareback. I feel more at one with my horse. I would NEVER ride a horse bareback that was not healthy, i.e underweight etc. It's not for everyone. To much in the way with a saddle for me. Just fyi...I do own saddles both english (Crosby) and western (Hereford) both well made but still prefer bareback and with a pad if needed. Happy Trails!

Hi All! Thanks for your amazing questions, feedback and comments! For those of you asking about what kind of bareback pad I use or recommend, I've tried just about every bareback pad over the years and the one I use and recommend is the best in my experience. It is thicker than most and very flexible, once it is broken in it conforms perfectly to both the horse's back and your seat. And the best type of padding is either wool or neoprene, which my pad offers. They are the most comfortable for the horse and rider and for the following reasons: they don't slide, they breathe, dry fast and are easy to clean. If you are worried about hurting your horse’s back, the only way you will is if you dig down into their back when you mount. While the horse can feel your sit (seat) bones through the pad I have never made a horse’s back sore, and I’ve ridden thousands of horses in these pads. If you have a high withered horse, I recommend a thin English pad underneath or a thin shim under the pad, but not too much material or you will add too much pressure. Please click here for details about the pad and to purchase: www.taoofhorsemanship.com/shop.

Thx Caroline, great info and education. I have a rope halter with rings, came with rein and metal clips. The length of rein is too short for some horses, so I rigged some slobber straps and tied a mecate. Now I’m worried that it’s too heavy across the nose and pole. Can’t post photo here, but the yacht rope is soft but narrow. Any advice or ideas?

Hi Caroline!😊 I have a couple of questions, for you, regarding ropehalters You mention, that a normal nylon ropehalter is not strong enough, for ex, a draft horse. I have a 10 year old Frisian mare. Before purchasing her, I tried her and it went fine The first time, when I'm about to get on her, after I got her home (july, last year '21), she spooks and bolts, and I fall off, breaking my arm 2 places. That was a major wake up call for me. And I began groundwork right from the basics. She's ridden inn, with bit. In Spain, as a 6 year old, where they're much more hard handed, than we are in Denmark. You mention how horses can get nervous, from the handling. I think that reflects, to my horse, if you know what I mean.... So, in my groundwork, I've had focus on the light handling And she responds beautifully! She's had some frog issues, which I've been treating, daily, since November last year. Therefore, I've had to wait, to begin riding her. (Looking back, this has been, a luck in unluck. I've been 'forced' to work with the saying: The Slow Way, Is The Fast Way'....). 3 days ago, I sat on her for the first time. Just, in a ropehalter, without saddle. Getting on, quietly, and getting off. Repeated this, a couple of times, relating to your Utube video, with JJ. At first, she thought, she had to do a lot. Lifted her head, tightened up, aso. Yesterday, and today, it gets gradually more relaxed. Best of all -the real magic, has been -that she actually leaves her hay, and her herd, when she sees/hears me -and go to the gate, to wait for me..... I have NEVER experienced this, with any horse, before.... It's worth all the time and effort..!!❤ Following your program However -I have 2 questions, Caroline: 1) Is the normal ropehalter enough for her, as the draft horse, she is? (Is it strong enough)? If not -where can I find the right kind of halter? We have a very limited variety, here in Denmark. 2) If I sign up to your program, -then how do I find it? Is it an app, or do I Google the name of the program, that I choose? (3)) Which program will you recommend me, to sign up for? NB Hope, that I've made myself clear, since English is not my primary language...😊 May You Always Be One, With Your Horse 🐎 🙏 ❤️

If people just listened to their horses and what’s comfortable for them it would all be good, some horses are fine with bits and are very comfortable if put in correctly. If they don’t like it I would defiantly advise going bit less as you don’t want to make your horse uncomfortable. People don’t like bits because they “ hurt” horses; it only hurts if they are used incorrectly or it’s the wrong bit, or it’s orverall painful. Thanks for reading

My mouthy little Arabian was constantly working the snaffle bit, so I tried riding him in a training halter with reins attached on the sides. He was easy to handle and more comfortable. I looked at different bitless options and chose the Zilco flower. He does great in it and is happier without a bit. I didn't like the Dr. Cooks bridle because of no release. I also ride him bareback with a pad.He is a happy boy now.

I don't like stop and turns because it's all metal, it's rough and it has shanks. A paracord sidepull is more clear to the horse because it's direct pressure, the material is soft and forgiving.

Excellent point: once your horse has run away, its too late. Your only hope is to prevent the bolt before it happens. I preach this to my friends and students constantly. Prevent the bolt, dont just ride in a big bit and assume youll be able to stop the horse.

I either use a neck strap (no bridle) or I use a simple halter with reins attached to it. The neck strap works if the horse is attentive to your body weight and legs. The halter with reins is better when the horse tends to be distracted and needs a gentle reminder.

+María Durán Hi Maria! The process to acquiring a horse's mindset of calm, quiet and obedient takes time. My entire method of training begins with liberty, then specific online exercises then riding. The liberty develops the calm, stillness, connection and relationship - this is the foundation to developing the "pick me up" at the mounting. It's not an exercise or technique either. I don't work that way. Rather it's created through the power of your heart, energy and intention. The horse wants to envelop you in a hug and with their heart chakra. I have an entire DVD collection of my work that can help you develop this with your horse. You can visit the DVD's on my website: www.shoppingcartdepot.com/shop/default.aspx?c=7l7V707k7Z2 The development of the flexion can be found in my Riding as One DVD. Please see my copy, description, above for more info and links. Thank you! Caroline

When I mount her (soft and gentle) it seems she wants to blow so I don’t feel comfortable to use me feet to give her a little kick like I can with my full QH. How r u giving Lovey the Q to move forward. I don’t c u use ur feet with many kick. I do lean and backup both my horses in the same manner as u, and I turn them the same as well. Just can’t figure out how to move forward without a tap. Thanks great video, the best I’ve seen to go bitless.

Our approach is multi-dimensional and includes the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of both the person and horse’s well-being. We specialize in both foundation training and problem-solving and have the answers you are searching for. The key in horsemanship and having the partner you want with your horse is in foundation training. If your horse has either had 1) trauma or 2) hasn’t had a correct and solid foundation (start), they will either be too scared to learn or missing key building blocks to their development. Horses need years of development and learning to be at the level you see in many of the professional clinician and trainer’s horses - including what you see in my videos. There are no quick fixes, tricks or gimmicks and like any solid education, it takes a curriculum or program to follow so you are building a correctly foundation. Should you want to learn how to develop your horse so you don't need a bit, I offer the largest, most comprehensive online training program for horse owners and trainers alike. My program specifically addresses two areas: teaching horse owners how to develop their horses using my method, developing their foundation, and it is also designed to "re-start" a horse, re-educate them, basically addressing the many common challenges horse owners face when buying a horse that comes with baggage, damage and trauma or little to no education. Hi Caroline - Very helpful comprehensive video. It is the outline of basic techniques I've been needing to get my bearings. I've only had a dozen lessons. Question: How do you get your horse to walk faster? I only seem to have 2 gears: plodding walk or trotting. I've tried gently leaning forward and snugging my thighs to speed up and nothing happens.

@TaoofHorsemanship 7 лет назад
Hi Suzanne and Welcome! Sorry to get back to you so late. I've been traveling for my work and just returned recently. I will try and address your question as simply and easily as possible. Please keep in mind that it's not an easy answer as I am not there to observe what's going on before and during your request. My answers are also not going to fall into the traditional training regime meaning I don't teach to go by kicking my horse (don't believe in spurs either) nor do I teach to slow down or stop by pulling. My method of teaching my students and training horses focuses on creating "oneness" in mind, body and soul (relationship). When you are aligned and synchronized with your horse in this was, learning together and working together is easy, joyful and amazing! So, to get back to your question, I teach both my students and horses to align in intention (mind), body (energy and rhythm) and soul (relationship) through ground exercises FIRST and before we ride together. This makes transitions in and out of gaits SO EASY and SAFE! Let's get it right on the ground and then take that energy and mindset to the riding. I sewed lambswool around the nose on my sidepull bitless. I will never - ever use a bit on my horses. They know and appreciate the difference - happy horses and foundation of respectful teamwork.

may i ask? i am starting to train my horse for bitles with just a ropehalter, the thing is when i turn his head he seems to have zero flexibility and starts backing up instead of just giving me his head.. what am i doing wrong?

Hi Adriana and Welcome! What you are describing, your horse not wanting to flex, is unfortunately the norm for so many riders. That's why they resort to bits. The pain of the bit and the pull from the hand makes the horse look for a release. In your case, your horse is scared of the amount of pressure, contact, you are creating so he backs away to avoid it and find the release. You might be asking incorrectly and he might have fear of the contact. I have a great online course that will teach you and your horse: Beginner Rider Course www.taoofhorsemanship.com/beginnerriddercourse.
