A quick look at how to purchase tickets for the Montreal Metro System, as well as how to enter and exit the paid zone of the Metro. This is a pretty basic video but I hope it can be helpful to a few visitors to Montreal in the future. Bon voyage!

Very helpful thank you. All public transport services world wide should make these sorts of informational videos.

Super helpful!! I was wondering if it was similar to the NYC metro - which it is. Once you know where to last stations are, it's super easy. Thanks for the great video 😁

Nice video. I rode the Montreal Metro several months ago and used cash . I put a $5 bill in the slot and got my ticket and coins in change.

I recommend to buy a rechargeable card. You can put ANY ticket on this card. If it is a single use fare, a daily pass, 3 day pass, week pass, monthly pass. Or you will end up with many l'occasionelles. I did this mistake when I moved to Montreal. I recommend to buy a pass according to the length of your stay in Mtl. The rechargeable is good for 4 years.

Hi! Thanks for the great video. Was wondering if travel cards like YouTrip work on the Montreal Metro (tapping it where you'd tap the regular metro cards)?

I have used the Montreal Metro "subway" System a number of times. I was impressed by Montreal's subway --- and I am from (and live in) New York City with its huge subway. Of course, in the NYC subway these days in the Dystopian, rapidly declining Divided States of America..... we must be on guard for being shot, stabbed, or pushed onto the subway tracks while waiting on a platform. Somehow....for some reason....I have a hunch that in the Montreal subway, people do not need to have such dreadful concerns about being shot, stabbed, or pushed onto the subway tracks. Dan, is my hunch correct? Very Sad for us here in NYC.

I never really worry about safety on the subway. But in any big city things can happen!

As long as you don't leave the train station (exit through the gates), does it still count as 1 trip?

Can you pay using credit card without needing to buy tickets? And do you need to tap out?

There and back - so if you tap the card once to ride the train, get out of the station, and come back later, you can tap the card one more time.

What happens if you don't get off the last station?
@minirick69

the train usually just do a kind of u-turn and goes in the other direction
@urbanlegend3972

Or, if you had fallen asleep or deliberately planned to remain on the train to enter the switchback at the end of the line, a transit official at the last station would inform you to immediately disembark. At this point in time, however, there are plenty of RU-vid videos showing the switchbacks and end-of-line garages, so there is really no need to sneak such a ride anymore--unless of course you feel the need to grandstand.

U-turn tracks would be impractical underground. Instead they use switchbacks, traditionally called "wyes". The TTC uses u-turns (called loops) for their above-ground light rail.@@minirick69

Montreal’s subway system is WAAAAY better than what we have in New York! It’s cleaner, more efficient and, of course, bilingual.
