In this episode, I go over how to rig a high speed trolling Wahoo lure at home on your own. I'll go over the differences between a store purchased pre-rigged lure and the D.I.Y. version. Perfect for charter fishing, offshore fishing, sport fishing or deep sea fishing for the highly sought after gamefish the Wahoo. I also offer some advice an tips about the set up required to go out high speed trolling and the basics of how to get going to help you catch more fish.

My friend all I can say is that I`ve spent a lot of money on lures trying to catch a wahoo all of this years and sincerely I could tell you that my biggest wahoo that I got this past january by the way my first one of 5 here off boca it was with a lure that i made from one of your videos " Blue sea witch with a bonita strip on the planner ", Thank you, Capt David C.

Hi Capt. David I truly appreciate the compliment... Wahoo are funny beasts... My pb was caught on a 5 inch pink squirt squid with a single 5-0 j hook and 30 lb mono leader... Go figure... But I have caught most of them high speed trolling... It takes time to dial in on it but once you figure it out, the fish better be scared. Tight line & take care ;)

Enjoyed another great video Heath. That was broken down perfectly. From the demonstration of the materials needed, to the assembly of the complete rig. I liked the explanation of the spacer beads to eliminate the short strike misses without sacrificing lure size and presentation. Sorry to hear you almost sank your boat backing down a fish. It's scary as all hell. It happened to me recently when all of the sudden a rouge 5 footer came out of nowhere as I was backing down in what was becoming rougher afternoon windy seas. Hi Heath, ( I wish I lived in FL.) It's great to see how we can make our own fishing tackle. You always have good ideas and it saves money. I make a Flounder rig that works well for drifting from a boat. It's a three way swivel that has a 10" loop to hold a 3 or 4oz bank sinker on the middle eye. A 30" leader with a size #1 Flounder hook on the bottom eye and the main line connecting to the top eye. A white 4" Berkley Gulp swimming mullet for bait works good. Steve and I caught over 40 Flounder last Tue but all were too short to keep. The minimum size in NJ is 18 inches. It's always nice to see your "DIY" videos. Stay safe and good luck, Mickey

Hi Mickey... You're making me hungry... I love stuffed flounder. The ones I catch when I'm deep dropping are as big as my palm. Honestly, I prefer to rig my own lures, that way if something goes wrong at least I know it's my fault. Off the subject, almost sank my boat today backing down on a big shark and a wave came over the stern filled her up quick.... I've been clean saltwater off everything for hours. Take care :)

Hi Heath, My friend's boat is almost exactly like your boat. It has a low transom and can take on a lot of water very quickly. Being on the water is always dangerous. Glad you're OK. Stay dry, Mickey

Another Great Video. ! am learning so much. Thank you. QUESTION: You have always said that use darker coloured squid/Skirt/Seawitch lures in lower light levels and brighter colours in higher light; I live in the Tropics on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean, So lots of sun!! - In this instance would you refer to lower light to deeper depths (say am using a planer which gets me down to 30-40ft)? Thank you.

Thanks a million for watching and asking a very question. No lower light level was referring to the color of the sky. Darker blues and purples as the sun rises and the sun sets is the lower light levels does magic hours that's when you want to change the colors to match that color. also watch the color of the water if you're in shallower water and it's more green you want to think of that as a basis of comparison for the color of your lure. Then again another thing that I found is that wahoo tend to hit bright pinks and yellows on overcast and cloudy days. I know it goes against what I've said but it does work. Great video, Heath, as usual. I have a question about speed. A lot of people throw out that same speed range, 14 to 18 knots. My question is, your video narrative says the same, but the video of your GPS shows 14.7 miles per hour. About the slowest my boat will plane is 20-21 mph, which is about 18 kts. Which do you use to set your trolling speed?

Thanks a million for watching asking a great question. So, realistically, you have to mind the conditions. If you can get up and do the 18 and you're comfortable, go for it. However, it's not at all about getting up on a plane, It's more about finding your groove and discovering the fishery, figuring out what speed they will hit at... It can be tricky, as wahoo are elusive. But, the more you get out and do it, the more it becomes second nature, you eventually find yourself doing it more by feel, than looking at your GPS speed. Personally, I tend to stay between 14 and 16 (I just add 10% to the MPH to convert it to knots), but like I said, I'm not really staring at the GPS screen. Your speed is always fluctuating because of currents, waves, wind, ect.. so you have to watch and do your best to control it and try and stay consistent. Hope this helps. Good luck hunting them. How do you open the eyes of the hooks to allow it to slip over the other hook without snapping the eye? Mine keep breaking when trying to slightly spread the eyes open with a pair of wire cutters using as the wedge to spread the eye.

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. I completely understand your frustration. You might want to try looking at these hooks: mustad-fishing.com/product/34007?color=Stainless%20Steel They wire they are made from is more pliable and will open and close without compromising the material. On the other hand if you have a 12-0 hook with thicker wire, I stick an awl through the eye and tap on it with a hammer until it goes down far enough to spread it open, this is thick wire that is ultra tough and won't snap. Then I use channel locks to squeeze the eye shut. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel. Tight lines & take care ;)

I am pretty new to rigging and trolling skirts/squids/seawitch lures (I usually troll Yo Zuris Deep Divers - with pretty good results), so I am watching all your videos and learning a lot!!!.. Loving everyone of them. Very detailed and yet simple. Thank you for sharing your knowledge where newbies like me can appreciate. Question: I am rigging a white with red striped 8" Skirt squid (with a 2oz egg singer) and a 6" pink and white seawitch (comes with a 3/4oz white head), double 7/0 Mustad J-hooks, 18" of 53lb wire leader onto 8' of 60lb Fluorocarbon. Can I troll this with a No. 3 or 4 Planer or would it keep tripping the planer ring?

Thanks a million for watching sharing your rigging and asking a great question. That lure set up that you have will troll fine on a planer. you're going to need a longer leader than eight feet.. I would get a yoyo and use at least seventy-five to a hundred feet of leader 60 lb monofilament is great. Hope this helps. I failed to mention in my previous question that my reel is spooled with about 250yds of 120lb Power Pro 8-strand braid, a bridle made with 200lb braid and then 100ft of 100lb monofilament leader. The rigging described above with the lure will be attached to the end of the 100ft leader. I prefer to do the wind up to the boat rather than hand-lining the 100ft of leader. I do have a follow up question though. For convenience of switching lures, would it be wise to attach a snap on swivel at the end of the 100lb leader which can then clip on the rigged up lure, or, would that create a deterrent to the fish? I wish RU-vid made it easy to upload photographs in the comments... Thanks again and please keep on making your videos...!!!

Highly suggest using 300-400lb multi strand cable. Single strand is way more likely to get clipped by a wahoo. I’ve had even 400lb get cut without any line going out which is scary. Also, a single hook or a proper double hook setup rather than the tandem will work way better Tight lines brother!

@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing of course, I fish out in the Bahamas and I’ve been fishing the wahoo for the past couple weeks. A single hook pointing upwards is key to get a secure hookup! Once that hook is in the bone it’s essentially game over

does this work a trolling speeds of 6-9 mph? how you do tandem hooks?

Thanks a million for watching and asking some good questions. Yes, you can troll the lure slower, however, they are meant for higher speeds. Regardless, they do produce strikes at slower speeds. The larger 11-0 hooks require a tool called an awl, you'll have to open the eye of one hook with a hammer hitting the awl down into the eye until it spread open enough to send the second hook barb through, then using a large pliers, close the eye shut. Yes. I caught 2 barely keepers out 20 miles at the 1450 humps. Caught 2 blackfin early in about 200'.... Friday the dolphin were everywhere, but the big ones weren't eating. Oh well.... C'est la vie
