How to Rig Tube Flies
Tube flies are often intimidating for anglers to rig because it involves a couple extra steps compared to just tying on your fly. In this video I demonstrate two different ways to rig the hook on tube patterns.
The first segment of the video discusses a very basic way to rig a hook in a tube. For many tube flies the end of the tube is close to the end of the materials. Simply slide your leader or tippet through the tube, tie on a straight eye hook, then pull the eye of the hook into to the junction tubing... done!
In the second segment I cover how to rig the hook using a loop knot. This way of rigging the tube fly allows the hook to be positioned further back on the fly to help eliminate short strikes when fishing flies with long materials.

Thanks for watching and hope this video helps!

Is the junction tubing, always the size of the tube like s, m,l?

Thanks for the video. What do you do with the other end? Another loop to fix the fly to the tippet?

Thanks for watching! Before the hook is tied on simply slide the tube fly onto your leader/tippet, then attach the hook. Give me a holler if you have anymore questions, thanks! - Sean

Thanks for tips. Are tube flies ever rigged without the use of junction tubing?

Yes! Some tube companies have "junction tubing" built right into them and some are just straight tubes where the angler can simply jam the hook eye or knot right into the tubing.

What kind of knot do you use for the loop on method 2?

I like the Triple Surgeons Loop the most. A double surgeons loop is good too. Both help support the weight of the hook well.

in scotland i get much more salmon takes on a tube fly than i do on a dressed hook and as a result 99% of my flies through this season and last year aswel were tubes. copper tubes for feb/march then i go onto plastic coneheads, plus if you catch your hook on a rock or underwater branch and it is bent or damaged then you just change the hook instead of throwing away the whole fly if it was a dressed hook 🤷‍♂️
