How to Rit Dye Knife Scales - G10 Gradient / Fade / Ombre style

Slice Of My Life: I gained some confidence in trying this out after watching BladeHQ's "How to customize your knife" video and it turned out pretty well - I wanted to achieve a 2-color rit dye gradient / fade on my custom CRKT Pilar scale.
Not exactly 100% what I was trying to get, but I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out any way.

Thanks for posting your methods, experience, and results. I'm also a tinkerer and happened to have a very similar project in mind with my own natural g10 scales and Rit dye. I was surprised to see your video come up on a search. You also gave me a few things to think about as well as a few tips to make my project easier. Much appreciated! Keep up the good work.

Thank you love your die job. You explained perfectly what I'm want to do to get a gradient turquoise. FYI understand your sticking w/ the fit of one knife, I'm new to knives & you articulated what I was unconsciously looking for, than grip fit🤣

Nice job on the scale and on the video! This is the first video of yours I have seen and found it looking exactly for advice on gradient dying. Thank you! I am an avid knife collector and the knife that started my obsession is the CRKT Pilar. I LOVE this little knife! Just a heads-up: the knife was named after Hemingway's boat (which was named after one of his wives, Pauline) and is pronounced "P EE l aa r". Keep up the good work, sibling!

Yep! Thanks for sharing the backstory of the Pilar as well, that’s how I pronounce it too! I watched a couple of interview where Voxnaes shared the backstory of the name as well.

Gradient is the correct word for those doubting the OP. What is the difference between regular liquid Rit Dye and "Rit Dyemore"? The method of achieving a gradient color effect as described by the OP is pretty much how liquid dyed darkened eyeglass lenses are done. OP is very intelligent. Now Rit Dye or Rit Dyemore dark green for my Cabelas D2 BM 300 that showed up near banana yellow with dark green high spots in the G10? That plastic lanyard bead that changes color under UV light makes it the coolest lanyard bead I have yet seen. The end product looks amazing OP!
@avgsgn
@avgsgn 5 лет назад
Hello Bryan! Wow, thank you for the comment! The difference between Rit Dye and "Rit Dyemore" mainly is that "Dyemore" was actually developed to be used for synthetic fabric. I've dyed plastics with standard Rit Dye before and achieved pretty good results, but it's because I watched BladeHQ's video about using the "Dyemore" variant to dye G10 that I decided to try this out. For my next project I'll try using "regular" Rit Dye. What was the base color of your BM 300? Super interesting how green would turn yellow! Also, I got the UV reactive bead from KnifeKits (just google them) and they come in packs, pretty cheap as well. Once again, thank you for the support and the comments, Bryan!

@@avgsgn yw OP! My Cabela's BM 300 D2 showed up with scales that instead of being the very good 3D machined multi dark shades of green it showed up with scales a light tan on the low spots with dark green and black highs. That is just the luck of the draw when it comes to non custom knives. You never really know what you will get. I just ordered some regular Rit Dye in Dark Green. Will give that a shot first and if that does not work move over to the Dyemore version. Should be done by the end of the week.

Oh man. That blows! However, do share your results! I’m interested to see how it turns out too!
@bryanmchugh1307
@bryanmchugh1307 5 лет назад
@@avgsgn I will! Already ordered "regular" dark green Rit Dye 8 ounce liquid. It should work fine. How long did you leave your scales in the boiling dye?
@avgsgn
@avgsgn 5 лет назад
@@bryanmchugh1307 Each dip lasted no longer than 30 secs and I checked each time to see how dark the result was. If I wanted it darker, I'd dip it again. I went for 30secs in order to get relatively good control over the color!

Hi, if you use a deep red you will also get a subtle tone to the black. I forgot to mention the white on black is also very subtle and you have to keep the scales in for an hour! Good luck 👊🏻

I wanna see a series of customization videos from you, you know I'll watch that sh!t. :) I think you'll inspire a lot of people to do some work on customizing their stuff. When people enjoy what they're watching, it makes it easier for them to get over the hump and take leaps in life. Haha, shout out to Quaker oats for its tumbler/die/customization station. Color looks awesome. It's like a side view of the ocean, going from the light torquise surface, down to the purpley depths. Sweet bead, like a photocell, which is immediately reactive to UV rays. Knowing what you do about how the colors counteracted each other will expand your ideas for future projects. Dangit, am I going to have to buy a Pilar now? :) Love their Snicker and Snap Lock. Later B. G@G@ BUC3!
