How to Root / Clone Tomato Suckers Using Growplugs

There are multiple ways to root or clone tomato suckers. For hydroponics, it needs to be done without soil. One of the easiest ways is with the use of growplugs. They hold a good amount of moisture, while still providing proper aeration. A couple of things to remember, keep them out of direct sunlight during the rooting process. And make sure you have some type of cover over them to maintain good humidity levels. Doing so will greatly increase your chances of success.

It's an easy way to get that late crop of tomatoes. Some folks are able to keep the spring crop going all thru the summer. But around here, blight wipes them out.

Hey Alex, There are 2 good ways to root sweet potatoes. Put them about halfway into a jar of water, and they'll send runners out the tip. Or, put them in a container of soil, and they'll sprout runners that way. Rockwool or other media are not needed.

Humidity is key. I pulled a sucker off one of my plants after it rained so much, roots began to grow on the main stalk, so I placed the sucker I pulled and set it in spring water. 3 days later planted in soil. Had my work cut out fir me lol, not to mention tomatoes are extremely easy to clone. Good video man.

Bobby like your video on suckers. I tried putting them in the ground last year and they didn't do well. Think it was the sun that did them in. Not to mention the summer heat. I did it right after a good rain. Anyways it is trail and error in trying something out. Im going to keep trying to get suckers rooted. Now I have a mini greenhouse, Im sure that wil help a great deal. It is a great way to make new plants so a person can share with a neighbor or two. Have a goodun.

I get a longer period of production inside. Outside, blight usually wipes out the tomatoes in July. Manure is the main thing is use for soil building. Any other composted material would help.

I make sure the plugs are nice and moist to begin with, using plain water. I prefer to use suckers that are 4-6 inches in size. You can always cut them down. Once I see a few roots, I'll give them a bit of diluted fertilizer solution.

Very cool, I will be looking for some of those grow plugs for things. I tried to do some clones but was unable to keep the plants alive all Winter in the house, and today is 27 with more snow so not sure if I will warm up enough soon enough to keep the rest of my stuff alive. Oh well, I learn just as much from failures.

If your plant was CP'd, it will only show up in the seeds from whatever the plant produces. CP does not change the entire plant, only whatever blossoms happen to have been crossed. If you can still get suckers, they will be true to the mother.

Do you realize i now have an addiction??? I am rooting suckers left and right. I just put them in 10" pots or fiber 6 pk containers with moist soil and they root within a few days. I have over 100 plants in my garden and today i made room in my greenhouse for 10 big buckets for new tomato plants i rooted. I am finding pots with rooted suckers tucked in a shady spot in the garden that i have forgotten about. Nice to know now that the suckers can be rooted.

Hi Bobby, I'm in Sacramento CA, the soil is bad in my garden so I want to try this stuff. I can not find the link where you show the beginning setup for the buckets...how the tomato plant seats in the bucket...so on... I appreciate if you guide me on this. thanks and God bless you! Nice work!, John

Suckers are fun. Last year I just cut them and threw them in the ground. Rooted, no problem and no real protection or special attention. That was last year during a drought.... got to love those soaker hoses. Or in my case garden hose with holes poked in it. Itching for the season to start. Eggs are in the incubator and seeds in the starter pots, rabbits are doing... what rabbits do

I started two clippings two weeks ago and have some good roots already. I put them in reg tap water with a little liquid plant food and set them by the window. I'm going to put them in soil soon with a liter soda bottle over them. My sister lost her tomato plant and I have two doing well in containers...she will get a clone :)

Man, I'm intrigued by this dutch bucket system. ONE BIG question: How do the tomatoes taste? When I think of hydroponic grown tomatoes, I think tasteless and a near waste of time. I've grown tomatoes using earthboxes and that's all commercial fertilizer, potting soil mostly peat moss, vermiculite, I stirred in some composted leaves. For me, it's about taste. Very intrigued. Thanks.

I've never heard of a sucker not producing. The only thing I can think of is maybe they got a sucker from a determinate that had already terminating or something.
@mhpgardener
@mhpgardener 11 лет назад
When people think hydroponic..they think storebought. The tomatoes are often picked green, never having a chance to ripen naturally. Those indeed are tasteless, much like cardboard. Let the tomato ripen on the vine, and the taste is much better.
