My coach would go nuts at how much Adam drops his hands - having said that, my coach doesn't have one of the fastest 2k's of all time hahaha...

Great video Cam, pointing out how 'effortless' Adam's arms look while he's putting in the work at the watt factory is about as clear cut a demonstration one would need to remember that it's more about pushing than pulling. Looking forward to a video about stretching pointers and routines.

It is very clear isn't it! A few ideas in the works and stretching is one of them!

I was watching some Australian coach share this tip on arms, he said, "Push on the gate at the catch." I tried practicing this and it helped tremendously. I almost imagine the catch as actively pushing my hands away (the gate) and you get a few extra inches out of the catch, making the hips-phase way bigger. It's been a real challenge to separate my arms from my hips and legs but its paid off on my force curve and fatigue. Great watch brutha, keep it up!

Just a thought...look at how relaxed Adam's grip is on the handle. Might be worth trying a fingertip grip too. It's not so easy to take the catch with your arms with a light grip.

What realy slow one down, is a lack of good analysis and a lack in speaking out loud, where a deficit is. So, every time you do a good analysis and speaking out loud, where the deficit is, you will find a solution / another way to do things. You did this very well Cam! Don't miss the moment in some days / weeks when you improved, to stop, have a look back and recognize you improved ... very important for motivation :) You may heard about "russian catch"? Arms long and just do the catch out of your legs, instead doing the whole stroke. 2 to 3 minutes during every warm up and cool down and your catch and your arms will improve. Yam on it and let Yam have a look for technical improvement ;)
@CameronBuchan

Agreed. If I can keep track and look back it can aid appreciating where I am! Great suggestion!! Thank you as per usual.

Again this newbie had no idea why "straight arms" is important until you broke it down here. Seeing "effortless "adam and yourself side by side, repeatedly, at different stroke rates, youve made both the what and the why, sink in. Going to start including "straight arms" in my 1k warm up, when I am not under any strain, see if I can wire it in. Thx Cam & Adam !

@@CameronBuchan straight arms was a nice little additional distraction tekka for me, this am, whilst my mind was successfully 🤼 with my "inner chimp" who I call Steve :) Weirdly I noticed my average heart rate go right up on this 30min row, albeit I had warmed up this time, my natural stroke rate came down, 21 mins at threshold was double the usual, this threshold high, did not feel like the end of my life. Thx Cam.

Cool video. It's hard with technique, but if you can try and find a way to measure whatever aspect you want to improve, then you can see if it is going in the right direction. There's a quote I heard attributed to Jack Welch, the CEO of General Electric back in the day, "What gets measured, gets done." Appreciate that the force curve on the CII is only an approximation to the truth, but like Z says, it could be interesting to compare force curves on the machine.

Hi, Cam. Thank you for sharing your honest and informative video. It is heartening that even an elite sportsman, such as you, struggles with doubts, confidence, and even technique issues. Perhaps a dynamic erg might help preclude reaching at the catch. The Dutch and Aussies are succeeding with them. Perhaps you could supplement your C2 work with some dynamic sessions. I am sure RP3 or Oartec would give you a machine. I have an Oartec DX and adore it. Because I am handicapped, I had some trouble assembling. So Matt Roach, the Oartec CEO, flew to my house and set it up personally. And I'm just some never-was, not even washed-up, nobody from New Jersey. You are a rowing celebrity! By the way, I always wondered about Adam Neil's famous 2K from 2013. Where did he pull the test? Someone in the crowd yells something about sending a message to people "back in England." And no one in the video has an English accent (as far as I can tell). Thank you, Cam. All the best, Your penpal Jamie

Thanks for the kind words as always Jamie! Like I said, everyone has things they are working on and nobody has it all figured out no matter how much it seems like they do! I have used dynamics at university and did like them as a technique tool. Perhaos a good idea to talk to them as I go through the summer! Regarding Adams 2k, he spent some time in Canada and that's where he did that famous 2k! You've just given me an idea for an interesting video!

Interesting, I also have my arms sligthly bent at the catch, I have the pressure from the leg kick way earlier on my hands this way. With arms straight the first centimeters feel powerless and lost. Maybe I also should film myself to see what I am doing on the machine....
@CameronBuchan

I feel the same way! I feel more connected with bent arms but in the long run its probably not the most ideal 😂
@michaeltarlowski9316

This is really, really interesting. Are you bow or stroke side in the boat? I ask because your right arm seems to bend more at the catch (could be the angle though). I bet if I videoed myself, I'd be asymmetrical.
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 3 года назад
I'm bow side. There is some of the angle at play but definitely bending the arms alot here!

Hard to tell from the camera angle, but it looks like Adam may have just a tiny bit of extra lunge right before the catch when rowing at the higher rate. You mention his left arm is especially straight, does he row port (strokeside)? With your bent arms, you are just working your arms against your legs, if you can correct this, you will find some extra speed at the same perceived effort level. You also mention your head movement, this will tend to produce extra vertical motion, and while the erg does not penalize you for this, the boat will - bottom line, do not get into bad habits on the erg. Keep up the work, good luck!

If you want to improve your technique then that's what you need to do! Figure out where you need to improve and work on that!

Just looking back at all the comments about technique and breaking things down on the erg - just a quick question. When training with a rowing club, or even at national level - do they 'teach' erg technique or are you left to yourself to figure things out? Is it just a bottom line of the test times being good enough, end of story, or is there an element of coaching in order to improve everyone on the erg and spot any potential improvements that way?
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan Год назад
Good question! The answer is it very much depends on coach and team. I've had coaches that only care about the score. Others want the technique to improve. The latter makes sense to me given water is where the races are so anything to help that tech is better!

Looking at the side view, I notice that your lower back doesn't come to vertical or beyond and you have a very rounded mid back. Is that standard? I've been having issues figuring out my own rowing posture as it feels very unnatural to try to "sit tall" and hinge completely from the hips (like ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zQ82RYIFLN8.html).

Everyone has their own approach to how they hold their back in position during the stroke. Some people find it very difficult to be very upright! Find what is comfortable and above all safe for you!
@tom53534
@tom53534 2 года назад
the arms have only two jobs, hanging on to the oar and finishing the stroke. Not supposed to bend the arms until they cross the knees.
