Technically you do have to "qualify" for parkrun by registering first. I emailed Jo Sinton-Hewitt in March 2011 to set one up in Peterborough but didn't register until August 2013. I would have had a much lower number. Still, it's inside the first 600,000.
I am 46 years old and I found you guys during the pandmic. I was over weight and I wanted something different. Sence following you I have lost 55 pounds and I have ran four 1/2 marathons and two full marathons. My attitude was to complete and not compete. Now I am ready for a time challenge. I would like some advice how do I choose a plan that would help me achieve my time goal.
Nice work :) If you keep running and enjoy setting time goals for yourself on different distances i would really recommend to get a garmin watch or something similar. It helped me allot when i started taking running a bit more serious, removed hours of time spend on the internet looking up different training schedules. Once you wear it a few weeks and did some runs, it will start to chart out training schedules for you, and u can set up goals on a calendar and it will automatically take those goals into account when setting up your runs. Really really worth it if you want to pick up running as a steady hobby. *not a sponsored comment
Favorite topics: Injury prevention and prehab tips! Sometime injury comes out of nowhere...how to solve muscle imbalance to prevent injuries is a good one too! Second one: how to pace properly in a race, especially with rolling hills. And a last one: how to properly increase pace during training and when to do it?
So happy you guys are doing a podcast! This is going to keep me going on my long runs as I train for Manchester marathon - my first ever! I think you 3 have great chemistry. This will be a brilliant podcast 😊. (I’m old enough to very much appreciate the reference to Trigger’s Broom! Made me proper chuckle 😊).
"chunking it" sounds more like something I would do after pushing it hard on a run too soon after a hearty lunch. Did enjoy the pod, have subscribed already!
Post and pre run nutrition for vegan and non vegan runner would be super helpful and a topic on running gels, energy bars etc would be helpful for my half marathons this year
I'd love to hear more about fuelling for a half marathon too! Despite completing a few halfs in the past, I'm a complete beginner when it comes to fuelling properly and don't know where to start.
My understanding is it's just get enough carbs before, protein and carbs after. I'm over simplifying it a bit, but that is a starting point. How those food groups are eaten is up to each individual runner. Replace electrolytes after too... Doesn't have to be specialist running products, just eat a banana for potassium, and so on
Yeah, finally you got a podcast as well. Love your content! Only thing: could you make it twice as long? Would be perfect to listen to you on my long runs :D All the best from Austria!
I would love to hear some of the thoughts y'all have during runs How you all mentally encourage yourself or push yourself to keep going. Or if you're thinking about form, zoning out, processing life. Right now I'm working on better positivity and self talk vs. degrading myself 🥴
Well I love this podcast, good banter guys. Had the great pleasure of meeting Sarah on Saturday at the running show. Think I was star struck tbh as I am sure I just waffled on talking b@#@#@#$s but Sarah was really lovely to me, so thanks Sarah for that. 👍 Credit to TRC in my opinion.
9:00 I've known about intervals to increase speed, but when Sarah expressed it with the 1K at pace 5 times, it finally clicked how that's supposed to work. Huh.
New to running and loving it. Furious with myself for taking 40 years to discover it. Wa told I'm a "heel stomper". Any advice on this and if I need to adjust this and how?
9 months ago I started running every second 100 metters and walking in between. 2 months later i could run 3km without walking. Now I'm chasing a half marathon time goal of 1:36:00 and a 5km goal of 00:20:00 which I'm hoping to hit before the end of my first year of training
Absolute honour to meet Andy at the National Running show and talk parkrun. The queue to meet Sarah was too long. Love you guys, keep up the inspiring work.
12:28 Icicles all over their face. We had a windstorm here in Alaska just before Xmas, and while I normally commute to work by bike (down to around -20f), there was no way I could have made it to work through the 60+mph winds (at around 18*f before wind chill). My decision was instead to run the 10k to work. I had not only icicles, but a sheet of ice blown up the windward side of my face, connecting my mustache and glasses. It was a bizarre feeling, and I do have a photo.
Awesome job! Would love to learn more about shoes, running mechanics and also injury prevention. Technology and running optimization would be another fun topic.
@@runningchannelThank you for asking! Last fall I had a doozy of a hamstring pull (not from running but from playing Capture the Flag) but self rehab was interesting. I also have achilles tendinosis (and I tore my left achilles years ago). I guess I am just a hot mess, lol!
Loving the podcast!!! Question for any future episodes around shoes and treadmills. I've just invested in a treadmill to help with training. Should we use different shoes for treadmills to road running? I know cleanliness etc, but are there specific shoes for treadmills and are they worth it for an average runner?
It’s interesting what you said about your 5k pb and thinking you could double it for a 10k. That’s what I was aiming for last year as I just assumed that I’d be able to run at the same sort of pace for twice the distance but obviously that doesn’t make sense as I was trying to run a sub hour 10k. Ive now got my 5k pb down to 27mins and now I’m aiming to do a 10k in under and hour so it should be more achievable I hope.
A topic I'd love to hear you guys talk about is mindset and the importance of a "why" when you're trying to reach a new goal! I've been coming back from injury and I've got the physical part down but the mental part I struggle with!!
Question about chunking! I'm running my first marathon in April and I was wondering how people like to chunk it up in their head? I was thinking I would run it as 4 * 10km plus a few km at the end.
if you have the fitness for the red line but when you go for it you feel pain somewhere like a hip or a knee, then you needs to dial back? So how do you effectively get your legs to keep up with the improvement to your fitness? In the past I've ended up with shin splints so this time when I'm getting back into running I'm taking the training easier and more gradual, I know the 10% more per week thing but my Garmin watch is always pushing me to do more. Thanks - love all the videos!
Great podcast. I would love to hear a podcast on super shoes. With the cost of them being so high how do you test different brands to know which ones suit you. FYI I use NV next% 3
i di have a very consistant 23 minute stoped for 4-5 weeks and im up to 24 minutes 50 seconds but i use to very consistantly get same time of 23 minutes which is good but want to get better
@@runningchannel Fab! Loved the fact Andy is taking the time to explain what you can implement in your 5K training plan to help you run a PB - it retains better in my brain! You should ask for questions and running stories of the general public (mundane life and/or brilliant achievement).
When i was learning to code i was advised to watch an online course called learning how to learn and it is advised to do your learning in chunks they called it chunking, seems it applies to running as well
This is brilliant Andy thanks for the heads up at the weekend, you've been stitched up yet again! That being said I can't wait to see it. Looking forward to the next episode!
Definitely enjoying the tips on faster 5k in many recent videos as that is one of my big running goals this year. I plan to try the 1k x5 workout soon.
Thanks again to all of you for the great entertainment, the chemistry between you guys have always makes me chuckle. The tips and techniques you guys offer continue to help me improve. I am relatively new to running and little on the older side of life to start, so i appreciate all the amazing topics that help keep me injury free well continuing to improve.
Interesting content! Could you pls cover electrolytes intake before 10/15/20km long run? In particular how much grams of sodium or mg od potassium and magnesium should one take, difference between winter and summer period? Thanks!
I'd love a chat or one of your videos about pro & con hair styles for women / folks with long hair. I know TRC gals have done double French braids, pony tails. I feel like I could adjust or redo a pony tail, but fixing a braid would take longer. My braid tails seem to poke me in the neck too. Is a ponytail swinging a distraction? Maybe some discussion about headcovering Hats( baseball cap), visors, buffs, nothing. The heat loss, vs sun protection, vs risk of sunburn.
Any advice on how to know the difference between bonking due to underfueling or whether you've I've just maxed out at long distance I ran 43k at the weekend training run.. averaged 530 pace but was comfortable at 525 for 40ish k.. I'm trying to judge my pace for 50k in 3 weeks flat forest track 10 5k loops..BTW enjoyed the podcast
Can’t seem to find the TRC podcast on two of Android’s most popular podcast app, Google Podcast and Podcast Addict. Would you consider adding to those app too? Thanks.
Hi team TRC ! I loved the first episode ! Launching a podcast is a wonderful idea and diversification for you ! Just a quick feedback : the sound balance was not that great. I listened to you on a run (I imagine I won’t be the only one) and anytime there was a little bit of noise outside (car, wind…), I couldn’t understand a thing. Rick’s voice was particularly far, but Andy’s and Sarah’s were also difficult to understand as soon as there was noise. The jingles were much louder, and I think there might be a bit of adjusting to do on your mics. Other than that, keep up the good work, it was great ! 🎉
Great pod cast - would be great to have one on super shoes. I have a pair Saucony and did the 2020 London Marathon in them knocking off 21 minutes off my time. I think there were other factors involved besides the shoes.I don't run in them all the time because they are expensive. Also one question I have is - I'm more of a distance runner longest was Centurion Autumn 100, so my pace was definitely alot slower - how do I train for long distance races running at a slow pace but still also train for the faster 5k, 10k races, as these races especially the 5k really kills me fastest 5k 23 minutes
Great first podcast! 👏 I look forward to many more! The Running Channel is my absolute favorite!! (All the way from USA) I would love to hear more about super shoes and just shoes in general, particularly trail shoes. I'm fortunate to live in a place with many miles of private mountain trails directly behind my home as well as loads of trail races in the area. I'm also wondering how to start parks runs here in America, or at least in my town. I LOVE that idea!
Hi there really loving your channel and getting plenty of advice as I'm training for my first ever marathon in Edinburgh inspired by Team Anna, I've signed up for other running events this year but one in particular I've done a few times is called the hillbilly 10k, a local trail run very challenging but rewarding views and general camaraderie, It's next month but I'd love it if you guys could arrange to document this run and give it a go, and to let me know your thoughts in comparison to other tough 10k runs, it's in Dalmellington east ayshire and on entry Central if you need to search it, hope you can help out on this, cheers Ps keep the videos coming love em
Enjoyed this one. The Montane Spine sounds incredible, I love that part of England but can't fathom how a runner works that out. All of my PRs are in a carbon plate shoe (I run Hoka) and I'm an old fat guy, so it really works, but it's not magic and it's not a drastic boost. Finally, reading the comments yielded some great questions, looking forward to that.
Would definitely love see Andy attempt 10km record with Miles in the buggy 😃. May be better sooner rather than later, he is still growing 😁. Unless you have another child, although Rick would give you even more curry about the size of your family 🤣
Would love to hear something about training in heart rate zones. This sort of trending topic on RU-vid. I am lately training a lot in zone 2, but this seems to give less result then my previous tranings with more variety in speed and effort. Would be great if you could contemplate a bit about that in the podcast. BTW, I never listen to podcasts while running, but always in the car. It is like watching running videos on the couch, very relaxing 😀
A highly charged and emotive subject, and given the recent events in Scotland, have you any thoughts on professional trans athletes on the track or at major events? (Really nobody I know cares if it is just an ordinary run event, just the ones where honours and large prizes can be won.) I will understand fully if you don't stick this hot potato subject on your podcasts though. :)
I miss running with my kid, this is winter here in Canada (no not your winter I swear), there is no way I can go for a stroll w/ buggy during the 'spike on the tire season'. I have stud on my winter shoes but even there it isn't safe. I dont know my PB but I did an official 10k in 1:06:00 running/supporting my wife last year, whilst pushing the buggy & a 18 months kid.
I personally would also love to see the 10k race with the buggy. I'm training for a half and am still a baby runner. Like just getting back into fitness and took a huge freaking leap. I'm training most of the time with a double jogger pushing two strollers and it is a struggle 🙈 I would love any tips on form while going uphill and pushing a boatload worth of weight in children 🙃. And then how to know when to push your walk/run intervals. Or when to hold back. I'm trying to train smart and be patient with the process of training but also want to push myself harder but in a smart way
Nice to see Rick at last Saturday's Parkrun; well done for getting back in the game. When your daughter starts primary school, you will be sick of hearing about chunking!
I'd really love to hear a proper discussion about stability and neutral runners. As someone who after gait analysis, was told to wear stability shoes, can I say for shorter runs, use neutral runners because they might be lighter and the choice is larger. I have running friends who never did an analysis and wear any old runner from the 'bargain bin', whereas I'm almost brain washed into thinking, I need to spend big money on specific runners, or I'll be constantly injured.
