I think 5k is the best running distance. It teaches technique, tactic and endurance. Whereas half marathons or full marathons are more mindset races where technique will suffer. Its also a distance you wont be doing often, but its better to have high frequency in training.

I should have had this instruction in mid 70s. My coach always wanted me to stay with pack ( mile mostly) and when I did not only did I not win around 4:46 to 4:55 , but I seemed to not to improve. FinallyI front runned in district meet with a 4:24. I was even less exhausted than before. I qualified for regionals and ran 4:20 and then state (6th place) in 4:17. After that I went in military. I hated the exexhaustion, the pressure, and the constant tug of war with coach. Now I'm 66 and started again in hopes of doing a mile in 8 minutes with no coach except for you tube.

A 5K is surprisingly aerobic. You can get much faster times by increasing your the length of your long run and weekly mileage. I'm stuck at the 18.5 minute barrier myself because I don't enjoy the fast 400 repeats and 800's alone (I need to find running partners). When you run on your own it is very hard to push yourself through the last reps. It really helps to have a partner. I watched the video below and it gave me some new hope for the average park runner. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q1xd3GjEuuc.html Good Luck!

Ive never perfected my racing technique, I've only been at my best for about 6 months and I like to start fast, since normally if i start at 3.30 pace looking for 17.00(in 5k) I wont be able to make up 30 seconds in the last 2k. 3 months ago, i wasnt quite the level i am now, but i took part in a 6k cross country with about 200m of elevation gain, and I started way too fast, leading the field for the first km (in about 3.10), and then i was passed by about 25 people one at a time, i spent the next 4k running about 3.50-4.00/km (the hills were tough) and just tried to hang on along with two other guys, then the last km started at the highest point of the course, downhill for about 300m then flat to the finish, and i just took off, made up 4 places, and managed to somehow keep my pace for the last 400m despite being totally spent, the guy behind me almost overtook me on the finish but i managed to hold on, finishing 21st in 22.22, and a final km of 3.03

None! What guys like you don't get is that the entire mentality towards peds here in Norway is a complete horror: It really doesn't matter how good you are or how many championships you've won: Being caught with EPO/whatever will basically destroy you completely. We used to have this issue in xc skiing for a couple of decades, where the best Norwegian skiers would win most of the world cup races before and after the olympics/world champs, but during those championships there were suddenly someone from East Europe, Italy or Spain who would be far faster than the rest. Pretty much all of them have now been caught and retroactively struck from the result lists, but getting an olympic medal 1-7 years later is very far from doing so on race day.

Well that ddpends on what you consider a performence enhancing drug. Any drug that enhances performance, is infact a PED, but can still be completely legal. Caffine or protien powder supplements both enhance performance, but are completely legal in sport. Even things in food can be 100% natural while still being a PED. Collagen peptides are a good example.of this, as peptides are usually banned, but collagen is 100% legal. The phrase PED has been dragged through the mud when there are tons of completely legal and even healthy forms of performance enhancing drugs out there that you can even buy at local retailors

Eat well (eat something light on race days), sleep well (always), stay active (don't ever overdo it in training - your not racing there. Avoid injuries). You should check out the Ingebrigtsen show. Gives a little insight to the family. His father Gjert wrote a book about his methods. Even though his sons don't train with him anymore, they still have the same training framework.

23m and 20m are too far, you should try 22min first, after that 21min, and after that 20min,

80/20 training, (80% easy, 20% hard) and as much mileage per week as you can handle. Have a BMI of around 21. Those are the top 3 factors for faster times. Goodluck.
