This Old House general contractor Tom Silva shows how to save a wood deck from a catastrophic collapse.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Tom helped a homeowner repair a deck that was in imminent danger of collapsing due to poor building practices. Underneath, Tom found that a couple of nails were the only things holding the deck's ledger board to the house. Using framing lumber and a sledgehammer, Tom pushed the deck back toward the house and back up to the proper height. With the deck in the proper position, Tom fastened the ledger board to the rim joist of the house with lag screws. For additional support, and to prevent the ledger board from splitting, Tom also used masonry bolts to fasten the ledger board to the stone foundation. He also found that the original deck builder used joist hangers that were too small for the 2x10 joists, so he installed larger-sized timber hangers (designed for engineered lumber) for additional support.
Tools for How to Safely Attach a Deck to a House:
- Sledgehammer
- Circular saw
- Drill/driver
- Impact wrench
- Hammer drill with 1/2-inch-diameter masonry bit
Shopping list for How to Safely Attach a Deck to a House:
- 2x4s and 2x6s_-inch x 10-inch galvanized lag screws with washers

For carpentry and general construction, yes. I've only been impressed with one person's masonry skills in my 15 years watching these gentlemen. They get by and up to code. But, practice and tenure aren't something most of them have with masonry, so I understand. Still, I agree with your comment. Happy home remodeling 🤘

no problem taking them off , there easy if you use the right tool . When you look at the number of nails in those joist saddle sabout two from what I saw and if you put those larger over its a hell of a job to nail the new saddle through the old one and the original ones are cheap electro plated they are corroding . Should be stainless steel. Also bolting into masonary plaster and veneers have no strength .

This was so helpful. It’s so hard to find quality videos about fixing old houses that are made of brick or stone. My house was built in the 1890s so the way it’s constructed it very odd. I don’t have a lot of wood in the house. For example, my floor joist aren’t attached to any supporting wood, they lay directly in between bricks of the house’s walls. Meaning my foundation stone was put in place and then the joists were placed on top of those and then the bricks were placed around them and up it went until you make it to the roof. I’m getting a roof replacement in about a month so I’ll see how that was built soon. I’ve been watching a lot of videos trying to figure out the best way to attach my new front porch and sunroom addition.

Well did you get to see how your roof was built? & how did you attach your new porch?
@tylerhumphries3428
@tylerhumphries3428 Год назад
@@flat-earther Unfortunately my roof replacement date was pushed up so I couldn't take off work to watch them work. I wasn't able to see as much as I wanted. But I did find out that the roof that was on the house was the original one. As in, as they started replacing the one layer of asphalt shingles, they uncovered all my original slate. And sadly, none of the five chimneys had been closed even though the fireplaces had been bricked up and plastered over in the 1910s. The roof replacement ended up costing more than originally planned as well because they had to replace a lot of the wood that was up there. We haven't attached the new front porch yet, I'm hoping we can do it before the end of October because my old porch won't survive another Missouri winter.

Many jurisdictions will no longer the use of lag bolts, only carriage bolts. Also not allowing bolting to masonry at all. At that point it must be free standing. As a firefighter we had a call to a home for a deck collapse. It was a rather large deck about 12 feet above the ground and it had pulled away from the house. Because of the number of injured and the media attention it drew, this accident was investigated. It did have the proper number of bolts spaced properly and had passed inspection several years prior. Because the lag bolts had pulled away from the house the county required the use of carriage bolts.
@Rick-the-Swift
@Rick-the-Swift 5 лет назад
Lt. Dan, that's pretty funny because carriage bolts are just as likely to pull away as the lag bolts. They're pretty much the exact same thing. Only difference is the carriage bolts may be slightly harder to install. That would be like determining that smooth shank roof nails were inadequate to hold down shingles and that smooth shank drywall nails are to be used in their place.

At 3:50, did he drill through both the ledger board and the block of spacer wood with the same hammer drill and masonry bit that he also used to drill into the foundation? Good video Tommy. A quick question if I may, would the use of chemical anchors be less inclined to produce micro cracking and therefore eventually 'pull out' of the masonry wall. Any type of Expansionary Masonry Anchor produces stress lines in brick, block, rock and in close proximity to concrete edges which result in ultimate failure. Chemical anchors are safer, transmitting only the consequence of the load with no built in stress fractures.😁 Just a thought. Love your work. Cheers from Michael. Australia.
