I’ve been a kennel tech at multiple doggy daycares and training facilities and the amount of people who say their dog is dog aggressive and they have 8 siblings is crazy often dogs are selective because owners don’t know how to introduce their dogs properly or bring them to dog parks for “socializing”

I have a tip people don't think about. STAY CALM. If you're worried, often this will make the dog worried. No tension on the leash.

My dog does not like any other dog when on the leash. He prefers having NO friends other than the other dog I have in my home (his Mother). He stays muzzled on any walk, and we warn everyone to keep distance. This does not bother me. It is unfortunate, but I have to accept this. Forcing my dog into socialization would only break down the bond I have with him given the circumstances. No professional has been able to "cure" him nor has any course information assisted to cure him. All of it is good to reinforce your training and bond with your own dog. Don't blow it by not understanding the true cause of any reactivity. Good luck to anyone with this issue.

Thank you for everything you do, Tom. I don't know if you'll see this, but, from the bottom of my heart- thank you! You truly are the reason my dog has made it this far in life. He was extremely reactive when he was 2, and he ended up biting the mailman. I found your channel shortly after and your training tips are the only reason I was able to understand what I was doing wrong and keep him from being put down. He is currently passing away from lymphoma, but he is 6 years old. Once again, thank you 💚

Hey Tom, I have a 225lbs Boerboel he's 5yrs old. Very reactive. I know their breed is like that protective but how can you pick a puppy that would be a good guard dog? What signs do you look for?

I stumbled onto your channel 5 days ago and am so glad I did. I m from Vancouver, Canada. I adopted my foster rescue Saluki last year and have been trying to work with her leash reactivity, Just following your advice has already made a difference in her calmness when out walking on leash. I’ve been working extensively at home with the “ foundation” of our relationship and she is responding much more calmly already. She used to bark every time my teenage daughter would come home or walk into the room. Now. I could put her into a sit and shift her attention to me and stop her barking quite quickly. I appreciate your passion. Knowledge, experience and clear approach of educating dog lovers/owners like me. I used to have 3 dogs all at the same time; a malinois mix, a rescue pug, and a frenchie. My malinois passed at 16 years, my pug passed at 15 1/2, and my beloved frenchie passed last year at close to 13 years of age. They all had different temperaments but my new rescue, a Saluki mix from Iran presented challenges I had not dealt with before but now feel you have equipped me with the valuable knowledge and new insights in helping her have the best quality of life possible… she’s 2 1/2 years old now.

I have been doing some dog sitting....sometimes doggy daycare and/or overnight boarding. I scope out the dog being dropped off, and let my pups (3) meet the strange dog individually. I always keep the GSD on lead during the intro until I have evaluated how they are going to interact. I find that after the first visit, return dogs are instantly accepted like they have been part of the pack forever.

I have a small boarding and daycare. I never accept a dog without meeting them beforehand. I let my dog judge if it will fit in our pack by how she reacts to it.

I love watching you. You have helped so much in training my dogs. I have a seven year old German Shepherd and a one and and a half year-old pit/rottie mix. We don’t take our shepherd where other dogs are bc she is very dominant and try’s to hump everyone. Our pitty/rottie is super timid. Not sure how to get her out of that
@StarkK9Academy
@StarkK9Academy 19 дней назад
As Tom said take it slow. Dog’s age of 7yr and lots of years of humping for dominance your having to correct is very different than a 1yr GSD humping. Keep her leashed when meeting other dogs, look for body language/pattern that she’s getting ready to hump another dog, and give her a verbal correction warning, No or Leave It, if she disobeys the warning give the physical correction.

I have a soon to be four year old Norwegian Elkhound. We adopted him just after he turned a year and the shelter did not have much information about his past. He learned from the other dogs to run to the door and bark every single time a dog walked past outside. He watched his brother get bit in the nose by a Golden Retriever at our local dog park. I was a very novice dog owner at the time and was not very educated about dog parks. We have never gone back inside since but use them as a training opportunity to work on obedience and engagement outside of the fence. He was also attacked by an aggressive off-leash dog. I had him muzzle trained before this as he would sometimes get a bit spicy at the vet. I am thinking he had a bad experience with nail trimming at Petsmart and didn't like any vets or groomers. I now do all of his grooming myself. I will always muzzle him when meeting new dogs. While I don't think he would actually go after another dog, it does give me a piece of mind that he cannot physically harm the other dog. If things do go south, I don't want him getting the idea that he can be aggressive to every dog he meets.

I don't know if you can help me or maybe you can point me in the right direction. But my dog she's about a year old now. Only pees in her kennel when the mat is in there. And she'll lay in it. Leave her just a towel nothing. For a while I shortened the kennel but still had the same thing. Because I read if they have the space they will but that was when she was smaller. But i figure she wouldn't lay in it if she had the room. The most she is in there is 5 hours while I'm at work. But is fine all night up to 8 hours outside of the kennel.

We have a boerboel puppy, 15 weeks old, and we also have a 12 year old border collie pit mix girl. She is very sweet and they get along but he gets too excited around her and keeps bugging her non-stop. If she growls at him or I scold him he stops briefly but gets back to it rather quickly. When he is tired they're fine but I can't leave them alone for long or he will drive her crazy. Any tips?

@Stephsgeckos
@Stephsgeckos 18 дней назад
Getting their energy out before hand if possible would help them as well so they're not as crazy during the introduction. I work at a shelter and there's been many dogs we've had that were barrier reactive and they've done amazing some do get over stimulated quickly though. We introduce on leash and then tie off leashes so if needed we can take the leash before anything starts if body language changes also have catch poles, airhorns and the hoes but they are hardly used. I think there's only one dog I've had I would have muzzled cause he didn't even try to smell the dog he was just hard staring and when the other dog got close he tried jumping on him but it was at a distance where he wouldn't have been able to touch the other dog the other dog was quiet and more interested in the handler than him the other dog also hid behind the handler after he smelled at a distance the other dog started hiding behind the handler like he knew what he wanted to do.

My dog LOVES dogs and she gets SO excited that she becomes reactive from a distance. We've been working on it but it's definitely taking a lot of time. Unfortunately idk anyone with a neutral dog so I can't really do that part😮‍💨 I've also had to tell ppl to get away from me cause they brought their dog up without asking

I'm in the exact same boat as you with my Rottweiler. He gets so happy excited and wants to play with other dogs, but he's 115 lbs and gets a bit pushy in a desperate way. He's also an intact teenager with raging hormones, LOL. He played well with my mom's 4 yr old GSD, but they're 1000 miles away. 😢

Thanx Tom. Many owners do not use leashes, and dogs go free with no recall. Others cannot be bothered by trying to carefully teach dogs to try and get along.....if possible. My boy has no friends and no real socialization to start from. Need to search other and affordable paths.

What I do is get to know what type of owners/dogs attend your local dog park at night before it closes. For me there is only a couple of owners who are responsible, by chance if a new owner is entering the dog park all of us recall our dogs and keep them close to check out how the new owner and dog is, most the time we interact with the new owner and dog occasionally, we take our dogs in the if the owner/dog is not responsible.

Hi Tom, just stumbled on your channel yesterday while searching for reactive German shepherd videos. I find your videos to be very informative and easy to follow. Since watching my wife and I have recognized some of the behaviours you’ve touched on with our boy Maverick. I’m very interested to know if you ever plan on returning to Toronto , Canada again. Keep up the great work Tom , we’re very eager to see more videos.

I absolutely love this! Love watching your videos even though I've been around dogs my entire life and started helping my dad train his hunting dogs when I was 9. Had several dogs of my own throughout my life as well and have a 1 yr old Rough Collie now. We live in the city so training him has been completely different from how things worked for me as a kid and as an adult when I lived in the country. He is the happy go lucky type who loves other dogs, but I still am reserved with him meeting other dogs because we have so many around here that the owners just don't take the time to even attempt training them and you can tell. I always keep meetings short (if they happen at all). Since he does love other dogs he also tends to get overexcited and can be overbearing for other dogs so I have taught him a "give space" command which he's pretty good with. Keep up the great work that you do! I'm also from Upstate NY.

My apartment neighbors get those lazy button release leashes. My dog has her service vest on every time we go out. However, the other owners let their dog leash out & let them wander close to us. My dog gets distracted & wants to play & leaps then tries to run up or gets nervous & watches that dog. It drives me nuts cause I’ve lost my walker or come close to falling. They still do it the next time. HELP!😮😢❤😊

Your dog needs to be properly trained to ignore the distractions. Doesn't sound like an actual service dog who would be trained to focus on you and ignore them.
