This video shows everything you need to know to be able to lift any vehicle on the planet safely and without damage to your vehicle. I teach you how to tell exactly what type of vehicle you have, whether it is a unibody or body on frame so you can tell what your vehicle is and where the correct lifting points are. I tried really hard to make this the ultimate jacking up a car video so you can be safe and learn more about your vehicle. Gearhead level 2 status guaranteed!
This is another episode of a brand new series on how to become a GEARHEAD! If you have ever wondered how people know so much about cars and are absolutely crazy about anything with a motor, then this is a great series for you. This is geared towards people that have no knowledge of cars but want to learn; however, the content in my videos does try to make solid connections between theory and practical applications so even seasoned gearheads will find the info useful.
So share the channel with friends that love cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, and anything else that goes Vroom Vroom!!! This channel is all about helping people learn how to fix their own cars, save their money, and finding a passion for working with their hands!

This is thorough, biblical level, instruction on jacking up a vehicle. I’ve subbed; saved to my playlist; and deleted any other videos I’ve saved on jacking up a vehicle because they simply do not compare….You’re saving lives with this.. Thanks for posting it!

I never thought of it that way but yeah I guess I do. I usually try to make my video from a point of being respectful and teaching in such a way that people will be interested and it is easy to understand. All of the little things that I know from experience go a long way to helping people be successful. Thanks very much for this guide. Best instruction i have seen. One aspect i am interested in is whether you need any padding between the hydraulic jack and the car? (Or the jack stand and car) my hydraulic jack has a metal pad (i notice the hydraulic jack in the video has a rubber pad). Will the metal pad cause any damage to the under body?Thanks again

@@denisewallstreet7144 Most of the time not needed but it’s better to use a quality metal or rubber pinch weld adapter when lifting from the weld. Sometimes they bend.

I love how thorough and clear these videos are! You do not believe how nice it is that someone is being so detailed about what a frame rail is. I recently acquired a 98 Dodge Dakota that I'm working on getting fixed up for state inspection and everyone was telling me to use the frame rail. But, I had no idea what that was. THANK YOU for explaining that for newer cars and cars with older bodies!

Awesome detailed information on body frames and steel structures of each vehicle. My dad's a mechanic but I never really got into working with cars until my mid 20s. I actually like working on cars now in my latter years. I think I just didn't have the patience for learning it. Not only that I hated busting my knuckles on the bolts and engine area. Especially when it was a tight spot like alternators or timing belts. It really irritated me. But when I watched my dad work in cars it was like watching a surgeon operating a patient. It was fascinating how he knew how to fix the problems. Or where the problem was. My hat goes off to all you mechanics!!!

That GMC Jimmy: I have a feeling that it spent some portion of it's life in New England or the Upper Midwest - somewhere that has snow in the winter, and that they salt the roads. The frame, underbody, and suspension struts on my 22 year old Dodge pickup still look new (dirty and dusty, but no rust), because it's always been based in California and never been exposed to road salt. Very nice video: every backyard mechanic could benefit from watching this. I'd like to add one thought: a lot of new cars, especially Hybrids, EV's and PHEVs, sit VERY low to the ground - this decreases air drag and improves fuel economy - and you often run into a clearance problem with conventional floor jacks: you can't get them past the front air dam when you want to lift the front of the car; my Toyota Prius is a good example. There are two ways to deal with this: 1. if the vehicle is running, drive it up a little way onto a pair of mechanic's ramps if you have them, or a couple of chunks of 2x6 boards. These will lift the car 1-1/2", which might be just enough to allow you to get your floor jack past that air dam. 2. Use a pair of scissor jacks under those pinch points on the rocker panel that were described in this video, to lift the front of the car just enough to let your big floor jack past the air dam. Don't forget that if you do it this way, you can't just lower the car to the ground when you are done working on it, as the jack will then be trapped behind the air dam, or you might even crush or damage the air dam on the jack as the car comes down. There are also "low profile" floor jacks, sometimes marketed as "racing" jacks, that are designed to get under very low-to-the-ground vehicles, but these are usually smaller, with a lower rated capacity than "full-size" floor jacks, and they tend to be more expensive, too. Also, I'd like to mention that lifting a vehicle should always be done in a garage or car port with a flat and level concrete floor. But if your situation involves a vehicle that's not running, sitting in your back yard, that can't be moved and has to be worked on in-situ, you need to be very careful about lifting it with a jack, especially if the ground isn't bone-dry and hard-packed. The base of the floor jack and any jack stands you use will need to be solidly supported on something like concrete paving blocks, or a base pad fabricated from 2x6's at least a couple of inches thick, and with a surface area at least 3' x 3'. As soon as you set the vehicle on the jackstands, the weight might press the jackstands back down into the dirt unevenly, leading to the vehlicle falling off the stands. So don't lift a vehicle fully off the ground on jackstands in your back yard, it's really risky. Lift the front, or the rear, but leave the other two wheels on the ground.

Welcome to Canada! Home of snow and salty roads. Yeah that Jimmy had been sitting above grass for a few years before it seized a motor and was donated to the school. All of your suggestions for lowered vehicles sound good to me, I usually drive up on 2x6 boards and then jack up like in the video. Yeah every car and every location needs to be assessed in order to do the job safely. The more questionable stuff people do, the closer their getting to vehicle damage and possible injury or death. Thanks for the watch and the suggestions!

Yesterday my car fell off the stands and I am trying to find a jacking plate. You said to not work on uneven surfaces like grass. I was working in deep gravel and I have moved nonrunning cars. It can be a pain, but I don't have any idea where I would have moved it if we only had a gravel driveway.
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 года назад
The proper answer is it is not recommended to lift vehicles with jacks and jack stands on grass, dirt, gravel as the lifting equipment is not designed to be used on these surfaces. The safest method is to lift vehicles on solid stable ground. Now can it be done, yes. Is it 100% safe, no. You could use thick plywood under the rolling jack and stands to allow the jack to self adjust under the lifting point and to prevent stands from sinking into the soft ground. If you do this route, I would recommend not working underneath the vehicle. Safe wrenching and thanks for the watch!

REAR AXLE BEAM: I would not trust it without jackstands at the ends... If lifting from the center, that's a LOT of moment (leverage) with the weight of the car pushing down on it at the ends and you lifting up on the middle. Note that some cars have issues with these: you can search "Ford Windstar rear axle" and read all about how they shaped it as a U (in cross section) so crud and water could collect in the bottom of the U... guess what, rust, cracking, accidents, recalls. Now it's called the Ford Freestar; that should tell you something.
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 3 года назад
Yup that was mentioned in the video. You can lift the rear up off the center of the rear diff or rear axle tubes but you must put jack stands under either the rear rocker panel lips or on the rear diff/rear axle tubes as far out to the left and right as you can, just watch you don't pinch any brakes lines/abs wires. I wasn't aware of the Ford Windstar rear axle tube rust issue but if you can't lift off of there because it is too heavily rusted/weak, then the van has bigger issues than not being able to lift. Plus you're driving a Ford....Fragile On Rear Diff. LOL.
