I'm very new to sailing (only 15 hours on the water so far!). I will be taught gybing for my next lesson! I stumbled across this video on RU-vid by scrolling through... Your videos are perfect for me! They have an explanation, an animation, step-by-step and then repetition. Perfect. Thank you so much. I learn better "visually" and i struggle absorbing information with theory books and verbal classroom training, so a very genuine HUGE, HUGE thank you! Laser is an international brand so might be available where you are. Perhaps look for a sailing school near you? This is the best way to learn. The videos are a guide to assist the learning path. I remember I was in San Diego, hadn't sailed in several years, rented a small sailboat on Mission Bay, and immediately capsized it. I think I was going from a close haul to a broad reach, without letting the main out, so the wind just blew it right over. I find your vids very instructive, but agree, have get out on the water and practice for several days, not only to get the maneuvers down, but also an intuitive feel for wind, sail trim, & boat direction. I know someone who is terrified of jibing his boat. He always wears `round. As for me, I've been kissed by the spinnaker pole during a race, and finished without going overboard. Bloodied, but we won the race! You have to respect the air and the water. Always!
I always let the boom swing as far as it can in strong winds as sheeting it in before you gybe can lead to a capsize once the wind hits the sail on the new tack.
Thanks for the comment When you get more proficient then what you do is better. This video is aimed at newbies and our technique is better for them It means the boat gybes sooner, as the boat doesn’t have to turn so much The boom travels less so is slower and the whole thing is safer It is easier to feel the slack point on the falls. Once you know the process and been sailing a bit then a full boom travel is better but as I say this video is for new sailors. We have less initial capsizes and head injury’s this way. And for newbies a strong wind gybe is probably best avoided Happy sailing Tim,
Great instructional video - thank you for helping me visualize the sequence! Do you have another one that is more detailed on the jib movement and timing? If not, at what point does the “old” line get thrown off? Before or after the main crosses? Thanks again!
Many thanks. Sadly we have no more content As for the jib there are a few ways here. For newbies just let it go. This makes the centre of effort move backwards and helps the tack. However the sail flaps which I don’t like. As you get more proficient the crew should just ease the jib sheet enough so the front of the jib back winds but doesn’t flap. Keep holding the job sheet on this setting as the boat turns through the no go zone. Continue to hold the jib sheet on the setting as the sail starts to back wind - fill on the other side - what this does is help the bow quickly move out of the no go zone on the new side. Only hold it for a second or so as the boat turns then release the sheet and pull it on the new side. The sail shouldn’t flap and will help the boat to tack faster….. practice is key! Thus technique is particularly good on windier days…… hope this helps Tim Sailaboat

Bearing away is just a change of course on any point of sailing. You can go from close hauled to a reach by bearing away. Also from a reach to a run is also bearing away . Gybing includes bearing away to and through the dead run so it’s all linked….. not sure that answers the question? Glad you like the videos
It is similar. When learning from the start it is better to avoid dead run where an involuntary gybe can occur. A training run is about 15 degrees up from a dead run and a little down on a broad reach. And yes the centreboard can be raised. Hope this helps! Tim Sailaboat
I once was crew in a boat with a very arrogant helm of an Albacore. The boom was scarred where it had been, and was hitting the shroud cables as he let the boom swing uncontrolled from one side to the other until the boom hit the shrouds. Consequently in strong winds there were four capsizes in about 10 minutes during failed gybes. I was a beginner, but we were instructed in training to sheet in a little before the gybe to have some control of the boom and sail swinging violently. This left me very confused at the time, but for work reasons my sailing days stopped 20 years ago. I still wonder if that helm learnt anything.
@@sailaboattv Not really, it enhanced my understanding that arrogance is not skill. Unfortunately I went to work internationally for 25 years and my boat sat in a field. Now in retirement I am thinking of restoring it and maybe starting again. Maybe it is too late for me, but the boat will sail again.
Thanks for the comment. If the rudder is not straightened the boat will continue to turn. At the point you mention the camera is not directly behind the boat so the perspective is not aligned. If Pete hadn’t straightened the rudder in the wind that was filmed the boat would have spun right round so it was straightened. Thanks for the comment though. The key learning point remains correct
That's a SWEET boat! Can anyone tell me the make/model? I've NEVER sailed but want to start. I'm 55 and in decent shape. I'm quite familiar and comfortable with boats up to 18'. I spend time in Maine on lakes of various sizes. I want to sail 50/50 alone/with a partner. The water is COLD in Maine. I don't mind getting wet, but I don't want to sit in the water 100% of the time. This unit looks perfect. TIA.

this is NOT the safest way, to do it safer, pull the main ALL the way in with the sheet, then gybe the headsail, get on coarse, then release the mainsheet ( saves you bumping your head, and all the shock loading the process puts into the rigging and the hardware). This is how it's done in bigger boats (yachts) because the forces are so big, they will knock you over the side. just remember you are doing it for fun, always enough time to do the job safely!
andy van thanks for your comment. There are loads of ways of sailing and we can only show just one. Our method is what the RYA uses as their standard method so it is perfectly safe to use. Dinghys are totally different to yachts where cruisers tend to pull the main right in. I have been dinghy sailing for 40 years and in that time never seen a serious injury from gybing the way we show.
Jack Moss hi Jack yes the boat is the Bahia and can take even 4 people if they are small. Most sailing schools use them with 1 instructor and three students However fewer people make it a better boat to sail. We found it good on open water Happy sailing Tim
Thanks for the note. We had hoped to make these as a pay per view business but this did not fit what people want to pay for. Relying on RU-vid for revenue is a long process so we are slow to add more. That said we had hoped to film more this year and still may be able to do so.
Yes we do. In the normal course it is tacking first as the boat slows and stops then gybing later once folk are more used to moving around the boat, and also keep initial gybing on light to moderate wind days
awful boat and poor technique, in breeze pulling the main in for a gybe will at best stop you from turning and at worse create uncontrollable heel to leeward, also no mention of rolling the boat or body movements to help ease the boat round the gybe
the bringer many thanks for your comments Our site is aimed at beginners who have little or no experience in a boat. There are many ways to sail a boat and the techniques you talk about are more suited to intermediates. We are talking to newbies here so go with the simplest and easiest way to get things started. They just need to know the basic steps first Sure better techniques follow but the technique in the video is tried and tested over many students on many courses in many locations and it works If we included your comments this will create too much learning in the first instance Tim Sailaboat
