I met Larry at a Rocky Mountain Elk event in Reno, NV. He was so super nice and even gave my daughter a gift out of his pocket. Great man who loves guns and hunting!
These videos are so informative. Somebody else said it, I'd like to have all of the Gunstock Finishing and Refinishing videos on a DVD for current and future projects and quick referencing by steps/chapters. He does gunsmithing the right way. This is a business tip for a new item for Midway USA..
You made this day a special day. And you know how. By just your being a gun hobbyist. There's only one gun out there like yours and it's yours. And I like it just the way it is!
Pretty sure I have watched every video they have, Love the detailed explanation of everything he does, In his positive “Mr. Rogers” like voice. Cheers my friends 😎🍻
Mr. Potterfield, thank you for doing this video. I have been looking for tips and techniques that I may not be familiar with. I should've known to come to Midway USA first. I personally love the way your videos are done, crystal clear, concise and to the point with little or no wasted time on your part or mine. I know the videos are edited and any imperfections are identified and another "take" is performed and that's fine and dandy, that's the whole point in videos like this, I learned more in just under 5 minutes with this video than I have in two hours watching anywhere else. Thank you again
Thank you for your very well presented video. I have recently purchased a Lyman Plains Pistol 50 cal kit from your company and this will help me in the stock finishing process!
The know how vids you are producing are right on target tells the consumer some of the things the gunsmith has to do and tells why it may cost so much too have a firearm reworked as a master gunsmith since 1989 I salute you.MR. potterfield.
Thanks to you I took on the challenge, used a razor blade to take off the coating which to hours, then sanded it. Tomorrow I will be using a red stain for it.
This really showed me how to complete the job without rushing to get the job done, leaving less than quality work. How do you work around any checkering? Thank you for taking the time to share this. Peace, Reese
When sanding an electric guitar body, you often use black or dark brown water-based dye after the first, rough sanding. That raises the grain and gets die into the end grain more than flat grain. Sanding that down leaves stain in any end grain and really makes the figure of the wood “pop”.
Very good instructive videos - they could be a little longer and more detailed, but very thankful they in no way drag out too long! The music is a little distracting - some soft guitar could be less "nervous."
Larry, I really enjoy and learn a great deal from your gunsmithing videos. I have a aftermarket laminated stock for a nice Mauser build. I would like a finish to protect the wood but not color or darken the laminate, but not a high gloss finish. What would you suggest as a finish. Thanks for all you do for shooters and firearm enthusiast. Midway USA is great! C Rhea
Those are some low grit numbers! I generally move up to 500 grit, then 1,000, then 6,000, then finally 16,000 grit for incredibly smooth finishes. Then again, I'm usually working on bows or knife handles, not gun stocks, so maybe you don't want smooth gun stocks?
I have been looking for a tatical gun stock that will fit the reminton 300 mag long bolt 770 model. Does anyone know or have a real site I can look on and with a reasonable price Im not paying 1,000 dollars or even 600 for a gun stock
You order something from here and you might not ever see it between their incompetence and UPS it's a joke. Who ever is running things suck at their job! Pay for faster shipping and it don't happen guess what you don't get a refund for the service you paid extra for, Nor do you get any compensation for being ripped off or inconvenienced! Dishonest and not forthcoming when it comes to helping their customers get satisfaction. Do what you like but I will not deal with this slow moving, dishonest, tightwad company again!
