In this video I run you through how to cast a thin shell. Usually if casting an object thinner than 2mm the molten metal will cool before it can completely forms. In this video I show you a little trick to avoiding this problem.
Hope you find this video useful.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I appreciate that you showed the first try and redo. I tried casting the shell today, first sand cast ever. FIrst pour, I underestimated amount of silver needed, didn;t completely form, so re did, and I'm satisfied with redo. ONe thing I learned is not to push down to hard on shells when trying to make it firm in sand, I broke the first two, but I had lots to practice with. Looking forward to doing some stone in ring casting soon.

I'm about to get into sand casting. I've done spin casting but I'm at the point where sand casting is so much more appealing. I love the fact that you can set up a cast so quickly and move on to something else. Thank you for the video!

Beautiful shell! I have nothing but problems using a jewelers saw. The blades break very easily and they're a real pain in the butt to put them in the saw. It looked like you were pushing fairly hard when you were sawing. Did you use a jewelers saw? Thanks.

I loved the finished shell. here is an idea to make the thin wall a bit thicker , what about using a few layers of cling film, as cling film is about 0.07 -0.10 thick so you hardly lose any texture/shape/depression and so you can also pull the shell out more easily so with using one or 2 layers of cling film for the outside lay it across the clay/sand and press the shell on top of the film and 2 plus layers for the inside you can gain nearly 1/4 mm thickness Either that or fill the inside with some sort of soft glue like UHU and line the inside to make it thicker, and if the glue needs to be removed from a reusable item then it can be pulled out. UHU is great for making small little molds to :)

I sometimes fill thin objects with jewellers wax to give it extra thickness and strength :) But I have also used a two part glue before as well :)

@@sandcasting_with_kirralea sounds like a good idea, it all about thinking of what can be used, as every person tends to have there own good idea :)

where did you get your tools? The main ones i'm interested in are the long handled pin and the long black rod you have.

Is it possible to add the top sand/clay with the black rod already in place with a bit of wax to stick it to the shell or something, that way you dont have to push a hole through and risk ruining the casting🤔

No. But if you have a drill bit you can hand twist it in place to displace the delft clay without distorting the mold

The problem is that gold needs more than 1000 Celsius to melt. This requires a very special gas burner. Most crucibles cool the gold too quickly, causing the gold to harden before it fills the mold. So it's not that easy to get the right equipment and especially that is not cheap.

I like to use LPG and oxygen, you can get both from Bunnings which is everywhere in Australia, and isnt too expensive to set up :)

@@sandcasting_with_kirralea But did the liquid gold completely fill up the mold before it hardened?

I LOVE your videos! Question.....you used a file on the shell. Doesn't that leave marks or does the polishing machine take care of them??
