So you're cast your dice using the mold making techniques you've seen here or on some other channel, and now you have a die with a chunk of resin hanging off of one corner that makes it unusable! Don't worry - casting your dice is only half the process. Today, we're going to tacking sanding, polishing, and finishing your dice to get them ready for the world!
I'm creating these dice for Loot Tables, where you can purchase them and so much else! Check it out here: loottables.com/

But it's soooo fun! I just completed setup of my pressure pot and my first set was great. The hard part is being patient enough to give it 12-24 hours in the pot 😝

I started looking at Rybonators videos and they are great, but I really love how well you explain the process here. I've refrained from jumping into this as the part after taking dices out of the mold seems hard (for a butter finger like me), but watching this, I'm reconsidering. Thanks :-)

these are perfect cubes. A real game/roll die is the intersection of a cube and a sphere (e.g. cube size 1, sphere diameter1.4) . Nevertheless, great video, I learn a lot :)

Great Video! Super quick questions about sanding: Do you only sand the sides affected by the sprew or all the sides? Also do you sand the entire face of a dice? I heard somewhere that sanding over the numbers would ruin it, wanted to see if it was true before I went too far in the deep end!
@MichaelMakes
@MichaelMakes 4 года назад
I only sand the sides affected by the sprue, but I polish every side with the Plastix polish to avoid any dust or small dirt sticking to the die.
@cartotech81
@cartotech81 4 года назад
You have to remember that when you make a mold from masters it will show every scratch. You should always sand every side of your masters, not just the side touching the sprue. If you get your masters like glass you will have way less to do when you make dice from your masters. Polish won't hide the issues.

New dice maker here, Does it matter when using masters to make your own mould do you need to have the masters shiney to make shiney dice or could they be matte? (Stupid question I bet but I’d love to know)

The masters don't HAVE to be polished but if you want the final product to be polished and shiny than you'll have more sanding to do later

Ugh all of my dice still end up with super matte faces that contrast to the glossy un-sanded faces. I used from 120 all the way up to 3000 with zonas polishing and the plastix. I dont know where im going wrong
@dionnesimoneissmitten4436
@dionnesimoneissmitten4436 Год назад
You need to go even higher on your grit towards he end. 8000 grit at 1 micron has done well for me. They have .5 micron. I may try this eventually. I get a pretty nice shine. (If you can avoid the 120, I would. I wouldn't start with anything lower than 400 but preferably 800. Just go with the highest that you can get away with and still remove the material that needs removed.)

w8, if you say these can break from catching on a micro mesh, how TF are you supposed to use them for rolling on a table... that is you know; hard =.=
@MichaelMakes

A sharp point getting caught in the weave of the fabric is a bit different than rolling on a table though.

Probably an obvious answer but would it be possible to just use the knife rather than cutting it off with shears first
@MichaelMakes

The sprue would be a bit unwieldy and hard to get level, which is why I like the two separate cuts, but you could totally make it work if you wanted to!

Just the ones affected by the sprue until the higher grits.

@@MichaelMakes So when you get to the micromesh, then you start sanding the whole die?
@MichaelMakes

It depends on how things look. For sure on the polish, like I mentioned, but if a face seems dull it might get the last one or two micro mesh levels.

Pressure casting helps a lot with this! The other thing is to make sure you don't have bubbles in then pipette before injecting into the mold.

This Blue Mimic guys prices are insane. To get a no support sanded and polished set of masters it will cost you around $500! What kind of BS pricing is that? NO WAY am I paying that much money for some custom dice.
@cartotech81
@cartotech81 4 года назад
It's well worth the price. You can get masters from a lot of other places for cheaper but you will spend more time finishing them. You will also spend another $50 buying inhibit-x so you can make molds that won't react to these 3D prints.
@Cricket101382
@Cricket101382 4 года назад
@@cartotech81 Actually I went through DruidDice and payed less than half the price got amazing quality masters and customer service and have no need for inhibitx due to the type of silicone I use. So, once again Blue mimic is grossly over priced. I will say that I sanded and polished the masters myself and that he does offer to do the service for you but even if you pay for him to do that it's still cheaper than The Blue Mimic.
