Tusked tenon is probably my favorite way to make a mortise and tenon. I’m a huge fan of the knockdownyness of the joint but also just how surprisingly solid it is.

Always fun to see the boss working in the shop. I look forward to seeing our hero in the shop more. Maybe you should change the name to Wood By Wrights. James needs to start saying "our tools" instead of "my tools" as the number of woodworkers in the family grows. Have fun and stay safe.

I was going to comment on the lack of "mom jokes" from Sarah, but you snuck one in at the end. Well done on the bench so far... and your second video with a starring role, and a distinct lack of plasters.

Really great work Sarah!! Well well done. If I may, I found that as soon as I loosened my grip on saw handles and focused more on moving my elbow and shoulder like a steam train piston my sawing got way easier and there was less skipping (and thus it was way more fun). I try to imagine I'm holding a toddlers hand when I'm sawing, very gentle but conscious. Sorry if that sounds man-splainy but I found it hugely helpful.

James, do you intend to upload any videos of Sarah learning basic skills, like sawing straight and so forth? I think learning correct posture and body mechanics looking at someone having no skills is going to be very helpful for newbies like me.

yes. we have done a few basic skills videos on the lives. I try to do those every now and then with new woodworkers.

sarah, do you like the low angle better? why? i usually put paste wax on the pattern so glue wont stick and its easier to remove. reminds me that i need to order some from you today. i like western saws better. after i learned that it is a finnesse tool rather than a force one. great chisel work!

You poor brave man, I hate sharing my shop, it’s my me time, so to speak. It’s a place my girlfriend (and wife when I was married) thinks is a scary, dirty dangerous, terrifying place that they stay out of at all cost; and I’m totally fine with that lol.

I am about to build my first workbench, a Moravian style, and am 5'2". I am very curious how tall Sarah is and what the final height of her workbench was. Recommended advice suggests calculating finished height from the joint of your thumb: 28.5". But that seems very short! The problem is that I can't just build it extra long and shave off inches till I get it right or I will run into the short stretchers. Any advice?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 3 года назад
Siri is 4 f t 10 and the bench is about 32-in high. There are lots of different rules of thumb out there and they all depend on personal taste. Most power tool woodworkers like the bench to be lower so they can get more weight on top of the plane. This allows you to plane much easier with a full iron. Most all hand tool woodworkers like the bench to be taller so they get more weight behind the plane. This is easier to push but it means you have to sharpen more often. But in the end it all just comes down to what you like. My best suggestion is grab a board and a hand plane and go around the house and put them on different surfaces tables washer and dryer and things like that. Then find out at what height feels comfortable to you. Then make it about an inch taller than that that gives you a little bit you can shave back to. Once you build it then you can try it being shorter by putting lumber on the floor to stand on. Once you find exactly what feels best to you then you can cut the legs to that.

Do you recall what angle your legs were cut at? I’m making a 5 ft version and a 15 degree angle kind of feels like it puts the legs too close together.
