After spending 3 weeks in hospital a friend went to my house to check things and told me my maidenhair had died. I told her to cut the whole plant back to 1 cm then burn the tips. Yes I said “burn”. I had to keep telling her I was serious. After about 6 weeks I was pleased to send her a photo of a beautiful bushy healthy plant. This same plant is now 40 years old and every couple of years if it gets tatty I give it the same treatment and it comes back more beautiful than before. I have only read this tip once before and am so glad I did. You will notice trees do the same thing after being in a bushfire.
@@claramsw Yes, I’ve been giving my maidenhair this treatment for a number of years. Be patient, it will take a few weeks before you start seeing new growth.
Hello again Clara. I just reread your question again and realised you said your maidenhair was dead. If so, this method won’t bring it back to life. However I trusted my ferns to someone to take care of whilst I was away for a few weeks and they forgot to water them. The ferns were in a very sad state and looked almost dead. I gave them the burn treatment and after struggling to survive they finally made it but it did take a few months to look healthy. As we are coming into the colder months it could take quite awhile for new growth to appear. It’s certainly worth a try. As I mentioned, you will notice trees sending out new growth after a bushfire. It’s a survival thing. Good luck.
@@suespence8381 Hello again Sue, I’m just seeing this. THANKFULLY THANKFULLY today I noticed it has begun to sprout very teeny little sprouts !! The happiest of days. I did end up burning it in the beginning, and I think that helped! I thought it was absolutely a goner. Thank you for your advice :) I didn’t think it would sprout in so little time either
Thank you so so much for making this video!! This is exactly what I needed to watch. I’ve had mine for several months now and had it dry up for the first time. So sad, because it’s such a beautiful plant. Followed advice and cut it back down. I have hope because there are several cute little green baby shoots. Fingers crossed that it will make a full recovery!
This is just the video I was looking for! I’ve just attempted to resurrect Francesca (my maidenhair fern). She dried out very quickly after the intense heat we’ve had so hopefully she makes a come back. Thanks so much :)
Good luck with Francesca! I hope she pulls through. So glad the video helped :) Mine dried up completely three times and she's managed to come back to life everytime, those sudden hot spells are a nightmare for ferns.
Gary will be pleased! He's not looking as sorrowful as your little guy was at the beginning, so you've actually given me hope :) Great vid, I watched the whole thing and didn't feel bogged down by overexstrenuous info and blah. Will be checking out all your videos and hoping you'll have something for when Bruce, Longines and Clive inevitably try and kick it too.
I saw your blog, and see that you just started your RU-vid channel! You’re pepper seed experiments will definitely help me with my hydroponics experiment, so thanks. Keep up the amazing work, I’m sure your channel will take off soon!
Thanks so much! I'm glad it helped. What experiment are you doing? I started looking into hydroponics last year and really want to give it a go. It looks like such an amazing way to grow things. Good luck with your peppers!
I just got one at the dollar store and it looks dead so I didn't know how aggressively I could trim this and still have it come back. Thank you for this video, which gives me hope I can revive this fern to its original glory. I hope my patience pays off.
Great video. I have been doing this but not the burning, for a couple of years now with great success. I give a total haircut each time, only because once I start trimming I get carried away. My maiden hair plants are outside in a position that clearly suits them and they always look fantastic.
I’m new to your channel and this is the first video I just watched. Will definitely try this and be checking out more of your videos! Thank you for this information. I was about to chuck my maidenhair
I was crushed when I came into work this morning and my fern was unhappy and looked dead except for a couple sprigs that popped back to life. I will try your method and hopefully can revive her completely. Thank you so much for this video I will be following your channel
Me watching AFTER I did everything. Idk I just cut everything down since it died during a bad depressive episode now that I'm better I hope my baby plant can thrive as well
@@daisydawes8231 i think the fern is long gone but I planted some seeds in a garden and some houseplant pits and they've all sprouted omgggg I'm so excited they're so cute
Same thing happened to me with my Oxalis Tricolour. I thought it was dead as a dodo. On the advice of my sister, I took the whole plant and buried it under an inch of compost, and left it in a cool spot out of direct light, watering when ever the soil felt dry. The plant revived and is thriving
I bought my fern at the dollar store. I had to rescue it sometimes they don't water them. It still had some good leaves but RN they are crimpling .. I'm keeping it under shade and a bowl of water outside. But this video helps I wont feel too discouraged if my leaves die. Same thing happened to my mint it died and all the rooting and dirt I just watered it now I came back with beautiful foilage.
I relate so much to this video, haha. I am not sure how many times I have gone through this with mine. I've had it for 4 years now and at least once a year I end up losing all of it and having to let it all regrow again. Poor thing. I've had a few others over the years but this is the only one that I have kept and just keep reserecting. It's taken a decade but I finally figured it out, kind of. It only took a couple days for mine to start growing again this time around. I was super happy. She just got too dry for 2 days that I was out of town. I forgot to water her right before I left. Oh well, I think she has forgiven me haha.
omg thank you! i thought i killed it and it would never come back, but i couldn't bare to just throw it away. it already has a tiny stem of leaves coming back!
I didn’t know ferns could come back to life so my very first fern, I unpotted it and tossed into a ziplock bag to keep as a memory. But my second fern, it completely lost all its foliage and then had a new frond baby the next day. I was like “!!?? I could have kept watering my first fern and seen if it could grow back???”
Are you letting them dry out between watering? I tried to make sure mine never dried out completely and I kept it somewhere out of direct sun. Too much sun can crisp them up really quickly. It could be to do with humidity as well if the air is quite dry, if you've got a squirt bottle try giving them a spritz of water every now and then. Good luck!
This just happened to my maidenhair, and it's only been 3 days with me :') . I dind't know the huge amount of water it needed, if the leaves don't come to life tomorrow I'll be cutting her.
