How to save Malabar Spinach Seeds AND Are the berries EDIBLE?!

Good morning all!
Today we are picking the berries of the fabulous Malabar Spinach plant in order to save some seeds!
This veggie is wonderfully easy to grow, and we want to make sure we can continue growing it year by year. We are also planning on planting some in various pastures and grazing areas since it is a super nutritious plant for people and livestock alike.
Come along and find out how to save the seeds, (Hint: its EASY), and find out once and for all, if you can eat those berries, and what they taste like!

Propagating a piece of the Malabar spinach is so easy. We took a piece in soil with another plant and put a stick next to it and it grew up the stick. I planted it I think in July when our heat index was as high as 110 degrees and higher at times as well as very dry. .

Thank you! Yes, it is a great plant. I collected the berries from my plant today, in Toronto, Canada. We use the berries in salad as well. I will dry them for the next year. Good luck!

They are delicious ! Incredibly nutritious! Yes they are edible, just eat the flesh gently off the seed without cracking it and save the seeds!

You can eat every part of the plant. The Berry's do not taste good. It's an absolutely gorgeous plant to grow and it's TRUE that it almost seems to Grow tons over night. It LOVES the heat. Thanks for sharing.

To clean the berries just squish them on a paper towel rubbing along the paper towel, length wise. This way you can have some to give away or sell. Easy…

I've wanted to try those berries many times... so thanks for sparing me! I didn't catch if they were sweet? Maybe there's room in the world for a kind of purple spinach-flavored wine? Maybe this is one of those things that if you kept the berries from growing (cut off or pinch off the flowers) that you'd get more production?

Ha Ha no, they weren't sweet at all... Maybe someone would like spinach wine, but i kind of doubt it. 😂 Either way, it was worth the experiment. 💗

Wow. Having a child taste test something you somewhat question the edibility of? There are those that would have your head for such. That said, I understand that you did research and advised her to spit it out if it tasted bad so actually you're really teaching good emergency survival skills. Thanks for the video. I'm glad to see it'll be easy to save some seeds from all these berries I have off just one plant. I've been enjoying my purple stemmed malabar but the seeds were hard to find and rather pricey and only one germinated. I hope they dont have to cross pollinate

Thanks for the concern. 💗 I had to rewatch this video as I had forgotten what we said. 😁 At that point, we had researched and found quite a few sources stating the berries make an excellent food dye, so we felt confident that one berry could not be toxic. At that point, i wouldnt have advised eating more than one. Since then, we have discovered that the leaves, stems and berries are commonly used in Asian cuisine, so i would feel ok about eating more. Also, just to note, i actually didnt tell her to do this for the videos sake, she actually wanted to try them and i said it would be fun to wait and try them on video. Dont worry, i dont actually use my kids as poison testers. 😁 Im glad you found it helpful! Our saved seed always grows well, and any seeds that fall just start growing on their own. We have malabar spinach everywhere this year. Best of luck! 💗

There is nothing special.to do. I just put them on a plate on my counter for a week or so until they are dry. Them put them wherever you normally store your seeds. 👍
