The National Retail Federation estimates $743 billion worth of merchandise was returned last year. Buyers and sellers can't wait to get their hands on the products at bin stores, where the rejected items of others get a second lease on life, for a fraction of the price.
Each weekday morning, "CBS Mornings" co-hosts Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson bring you the latest breaking news, smart conversation and in-depth feature reporting. "CBS Mornings" airs weekdays at 7 a.m. on CBS and stream it at 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

I actually refuse to buy anything returned. There’s a reason it’s back on the shelves. I learned years ago that there will be some vital part missing or broken.

From experience I would never buy something like a returned laptop computer or smart phone. These things are returned for a reason, which may not be apparent when they're refurbished/repackaged. Whoever may be doing this back in the warehouse may turn it on and put it through a minimum test. They'll then do a hard reset and pack it up for resale. The problem it has is still there. After going through this a few times, never again. As far as just buying stuff for a bargain/binge shopping, that's just a waste of money. Why buy stuff you don't have a need for? I don't have room for buying junk like this.

Well, she got two laptops for $20. There may be different problems, but if she manages to get just one that's workable, it's still a deal.

@@kenmore01 And also even if she has to put some money towards fixing it, it's still cheaper than buying a brand new laptop. I apply this logic to cell phones and cars too in the end I always end up saving more money

Amazon could open their own return stores. Macy's could put everything in their backstage stores. This is lazy retailing.

For returns totaling over $743,000 last year, that had to mean that the same amount had to be spent, of course. Good to know people got the same amount returned that they put into it. Doesn't always work that way. Ironically, those same items bought for cheap now are going to have a competitive markup on eBay to the original prices.

The ONLY way to SAVE money is to NOT SPEND money. Why is this such a difficult concept for people? Getting a deal on a price is not saving money.

Although they’re spending money, a lot of them are actually reselling the items for a profit. Essentially, they’re investors.

This is brilliant. I rarely return items, but it is usually because it's an incorrect item or the product description is terrible. Ex: The items are incorrectly measured. It would be good to see some of these items in person.

We need a law to limit people from buying and buying things they don't need because this is hurting the environment. I'm in high school and taking economics.

The big question is: do they still come with warranty? Let's say you bought a cheap iPhone 15.

Here another tip. Don't buy if you don't really need it. I rarely buy anything unless it broke.

See us on how some unscrupulous retailers are stealing it back using price 'scanflation' tactics we uncover and expose daily. Regardless, without regulatory oversight monopolies will continue to force dark markets that have become resellers of our own losses. Great piece though, and you should do a story on us! Cheers, Todd B.

These kinds of stores are good, IF someone Really needs something and can get it for $10 vs $200 OR if the person is making a living doing reselling online etc. The rest, that are probably the majority, are hoarders and just buy and buy and buy, without really needing the items.
