Due to busy season, I regretfully neglected some pots of string of pearls for too long.
In this video, I will show you how I revived it with promising result after 2 months.
Hope you will enjoy this video.
Thanks.

I'm amazed that you were able to save those sad looking pearls! My problem is that my plant usually looks very healthy for a few months, then one day I notice many of the usually plump, round pearls look a darker, uglier green and the balls have flattened out as though they have been smashed down...I don't understand why the sudden deterioration since I pay attention to my plants every day and try to properly water them. This last pot was only repotted almost one year ago but in a very shallow container. I'm not sure if it is a problem of spider mites, my watering, the heat of Hawaii summers??? Please advise cause I don't know what I should do. Thank you!

Hi Jen, I know exactly what you mean, your description is spot on as these happen to me especially during those unforgiving weather conditions ( too cold winters when we have lots of root rot, and really hot summers). What helped me is to realise that these pearls have very thin stems, as compared to other succulents that I have in the garden. And since the pearls are trailing through the stems, any portion of the stem that might dried out or rot will affect the whole lot. Sometimes, it is difficult to see the bad strands because of the lush amount of pearls covering them up. My style of watering is this - I let the soil really dry out, it will be evident in the pearls because they will not be so plump, then I will give good amount of watering. Then I will come back maybe after a day or two. All good stems should have plump pearls by then, Any strand which still has raising-looking pearls means there is something wrong with them. Now that you identify those strands, just cut them out and just propagate back in the spoil to start new roots. And you just need to do this say every month. Basically, it is just early detection. I hope that helps.

Woe! Thanks for this video. I just reported a string of pearls that I over watered but I think now I may just cut them like you did because the root system is so sparse. Thanks again!

How do you look after them in Australian Summer? Mine has been amazing all year but we’ve just had a heat wave in NSW & I just noticed a lot of the strings are brown & crispy & dead, I’m so sad! & I may need to to break it down a little more for me because I’m a bit of slow learner, what’s the best soil mix to use when replanting for this environment? & how do you dry the soil? Help I’m so clueless!

this video is Exactly what I need. A month a go I've bought 2" SOP pot with some trailing stems but the pearls looked dry while the stem is green and no matter how I water it top or bottom . they still looks dry and sad. So yesterday I've repoted them to 3" pot and there is some small tiny roots . Today I've check them and pearls still looks dry . So I was wondering how long it will take them to get plumb and healthy ? and should I put the pot inside Zip lock to increase humidity? . Thank you

Hi. first of all, so sorry for replying only now. We were away on holiday and had been too busy once we got back. i hope your string of pearls are doing better now.. I would really inspect that there is not rot in the stem as any portion of the long trail that has rot will affect the water flow to the other parts. I am not particularly a fan of humidity for succulents as they could cause mine to rot, best for them to have good air circulation..

How often are you watering the plant? Did you water after replanting?
@SucculentSocial
@SucculentSocial 2 года назад
HI there. Since they were cuttings then, no water for about 2-3 weeks. this gave them time to grow their roots. they were really wrinkly due to lac of water when I first gave them a drink but got plump very easily after a few days. =)

Hi! Lovely how you were able to revive them!! 💖 I struggle with these plants but I want to have them so bad! After I get new pearls, is it okay to change the soil completely? Will it kill the plant due to shock? I don't usually like the potting mix it comes with as I'm afraid they're not fit with my conditions (might be not so well-draining) or might even have pests in them. Is it better to leave it? Also, are they generally okay in shaded areas? Just bright shaded area, not much sun 😅 P.S. You sound Filipino!! Great video 💟

Hi @reapatricia! These are lovely succulents to have. If you plant to totally remove the roots from old soil, I will suggest to air dry them for a day or two. Just in case there will be some disturbed roots during uprooting, then they will get a chance to callus before getting into new soil. They are happy with bright indirect sunlight. Mine are now in hanging pots under the tree. Australia is now our home but we are from the Philippines! Gudlak sa iyong string of pearls. Go lang nang go!

Hi Barb, I water after about 2 weeks and then afterwards, yes, I use the soak and dry method..;)
@solarwinds-

Hi, need advice. What do I do to increase the size of the pearls? My string of pearls get 4 to 6 hours of indirect bright light every day but the the pearls are small, about 5mm in diameter. When I first got them from Mountain Crest Gardens, about 3 years ago they were nice big 1 or 2 cm. If I increase the light, they bleach out and burn, reduce the light and the pearls grow small but green and shiny.

Hi there. You know what, I do have a video that I still have not gotten a chance to post because it is a before and after video (I have been patiently waiting for the “after” part. haha) But it is exactly an answer to your question. It is about why we have to repot and change soil after a couple of years. Whenever I have pearls that do not give out chubby leaves anymore, it is high time for me to change their soil. A good, rich soil that will give the leaves just the boost they need. I am hust waiting for the results of my before/after video to be obvious and hopefully, I can post that video soon so you can see the results. But don’t wait for the video. Try to repot your pearls and hopefully, you can see chubby bigger pearls after a few weeks.. 😍

When you planted the brown stems and left them for a while, did you water them at all or just stick the stems in the dry soil?
@SucculentSocial
@SucculentSocial 6 месяцев назад
Hi, firstly, sorry for being able to reply just now. We were away for a 3-week holiday and been busy since we got back. To answer, your question, I only water them once I am confident that new roots have shown, so that will be roughly 3-4 weeks after I planted them.

Yes, How often should we be watering them or is it best to mist /spray them???
@SucculentSocial
@SucculentSocial 5 месяцев назад
Hi. I am not really a fan of misting because the water mostly just goes to the leaves and not the roots. I usually water when the soil is dry, you will get a good feel of when they are dry by checking the weight or by dipping finger in the soil. So just the soak-and-dry method there, usually once every 2 weeks depending on your weather condition.

How often do you water the string of pearls? Should you mist it often?
@SucculentSocial
@SucculentSocial 5 месяцев назад
Hi. I am not a fan of misting as the water usually just go to the leaves and evaporate instead of watering directly into the soil. I water them about once a week or once every 2 weeks depending on the season. I usually let the soil be dry before watering them.. Hope that helps..😍

@SucculentSocial
@SucculentSocial Год назад
Hi Rosalin.. I usually propagate the portion of the stems with leaves and just cut off any stem without leaves. If the roots are still healthy, that is good. Just maybe top up some soil. Yes, I water just about once a week in summer but very rarely do we water in winter time.. Hope that helps and all the best! -Leslie

What about the watering how long before you water and how often
@SucculentSocial
@SucculentSocial Год назад
Hello! 😊 We don’t water for about 2 weeks after planting the cuttings, sometimes even more until we see some root growth.. once roots develop, we only water when the soil is dry.. as we are located in Melbourne, Australia, we have 4 seasons so we also consider that.. our cold months are pretty wet so we don’t water them that much..

In that two months how do u water them? Once a week? Twice a week?
@SucculentSocial
@SucculentSocial 6 месяцев назад
It depends on the weather.. If rooted and settled already, We do in general once a week, maybe once a fortnight on colder days but as a rule of thumb, we let the soil dry out completely before watering them again. I kind of check the weight of the pot and if it is light (meaning no water at all) then I water them. 😉

I place mine hanging under the trees so I'd say they are getting direct morning sun but they are kept shaded for the rest of the day. They stay a nice green shade with this while those that I keep with more sun gets a bit darker green.
