Part six of the beautiful words series, Halcyan is a tricky one. My natural inclination would have been to harden the ‘c’, producing an ‘k’ sound in the middle of the word. Indeed, this is much closer to the Greek root word, but for now let’s keep it simple.
Halcyan breaks down into two word parts, ‘hals’ meaning ‘sea’ (same root as ‘halo’, interestingly) and ‘kyon’ meaning ‘conceiving’ or to swell. This construction specifically refers to 14 days of calm weather at the winter solstice when a mythical bird would build a floating nest.
The meaning as we use it today refers to calm and/or prosperous days.
