One of the coolest things about learning a language like Russian is to learn how to make new sounds with your mouth! For me, just getting that back low, diaphragm forced "Mu" in "Mbi" has been difficult. My goal is to say it like Russians do.

CaptinKillJoy 83 I don't see what's so difficult about it. I've been using g the app Duolongo to learn Russian, & it's great! I am able to have very basic conversations in Russian now. The Zd sound or Zdr will come to you, just practice it over & over until it becomes natural to your brain.. Same as rolling the "R". After a while, it all becomes natural. Удачи!

Is the letter "B" ( in the 5th position ) silent ? - Здравствуйте thank you for tutorial I can read OK and speak short phrases in Russian, but nothing sounds so thoroughly Russian when you hear a native speaker rattle off a perfectly formed "Здравствуй" or "Здравствуйte" with complete ease, as if they'e been saying for so long, it slides out of the mouth the way an ice skater slides on the surface of the ice, ending with the perfectly pronounce vowel combination of "уй" - always rapidly combining those consonants and vowels - nothing like it in English

It's because English speakers pronounce this combination differently. Here is how we--Russian speakers--do it: "Z" - the tip of the tongue is touching the lower incisors; "D" - the tip of the tongue touches the UPPER INCISORS and NOT the alveolar ridge as in English.

You should make more videos on words and how to pronounce them and explaining them. This was the first word I learned and I don’t know how many other channels/videos I watched til I finally came across yours and I got it right away. I couldn’t understand anyone else and they would only say it once or maybe twice and were too fast. I like how you break down the word and say it several times. Thank you. I have subscribed and am watching your other videos. 👍🏼👍🏼

I have got a genuine question. I have met some Russian native speakers and they did not seem to pronounce the first letter Z or maybe talked so quickly I did not hear it. So it was more like "dra stvuy te". Do you happen to know if this maybe is an accent thing which might be regional? And second thing I noticed was the second syllable sounding more like stvee instead of stvuy. So it sounded more like Dra stvee te. Could you maybe shed a light on that? I am very interested in this subject.
@Martina-Kosicanka

There is also an option to say Zdravste instead of zdravstvujte. But I am not native speaker, I am fellow student. I have only noticed it in Russian movies

You have a good understanding of language, do you speak many other languages? You like north of China, do you ever go there? Sorry if you have already told your story, maybe on your web site but the linguist skill is interesting and wondering why you took this path and what opportunities are available to linguist.
@DenisFedorov
@DenisFedorov 6 лет назад
Yes, I go to China. It is very easy for us to travel there. I speak only English as a foreign language. I took this path because it is aligned with who I am and what I want to do, with my skills and areas of expertise. I know Russian and how to teach it, I know some English, I can shoot and edit videos, etc. With this skillset, I would be a very bad lumberjack, a horrible farmer and, surely, an awful bulldozer operator, but I would be a good linguist / content creator.

I can already say these words. No problem. What I'm having trouble grasping is the concept of masculine and feminine. Are there certain terms only women are allowed to use, and then another set of terms for only men? Don't tell me "Well this is a masculine term because it ends with this letter, and this is a feminine term because it ends with these two letters." What I wanna know is why it matters??? And, so far, no one has been able to explain that to me. I mean, am I gonna get over there to Saint Petersburg and get accused of being gay because I'm using all the wrong words? What??? I already knew how to talk long before I ever took high school grammar.
@DenisFedorov
@DenisFedorov 3 года назад
Feminine and masculine are grammatical genders, don't confuse those with sex. For example, "river" is she, so to say that the river is wide, you'll need to use a feminine adjective (=a feminine ending), for example. There are no separate words for men and women, they all speak the same Russian language.
