PLEASE NOTE: The names in this video were picked because many of them are traditional, especially in Gaeltacht areas, for the past century or so, though not all of these names are in common usage today. In some cases, the pronunciation reflects the common pronunciation of the name in Ireland, though it may not be correct historically. If your Gaelic name was left out, that may be because it has only become popular very recently or simply because I forgot to include it. For many names, multiple correct pronunciations are possible.

I like this video, you are nice and respectful when teaching others how to pronounce the names. I have seen quite a few videos recently as I try to learn and the people are so horrible and laughing and complaining about those of us who have no clue. I get that it must be really annoying constantly having your name mispronounced and all the looks of utter confusion and disbelief that Irish people get when the pronunciation just doesn't match the letters we see. But at the same time unfortunately Irish/Gaelic is not widely taught and so when people have not had exposure to something, then of course we only know one way to use letters, it takes time to understand the Irish spelling system even though it makes perfect sense once you do. People need to understand that and not be nasty about what others don't know through no fault of their own. So thank you for not being bitter or having a bad attitude about it. I will watch your videos from now on.

There are lots of ways to pronounce names and words in Irish. Being from the Donegal Gaeltacht, I would say “Catch” and “Catch-keen” with an emphasis on the first syllable of Caitlín. I won’t be able to answer your query about how it’s pronounced in Limerick. Honestly, Cáit can be pronounced “Cat,” “Catch,” “Cawt,” or “Cawtch.” We all have our ways of speaking our language. I try to stay true to the actual rules of pronunciation as I was taught them.

2:02 will the bh combination always give the ‘v’ sound?
@brenainnmacthomais
@brenainnmacthomais 3 года назад
In Gaeilge, “bh” and “mh” sound like “v” when surrounded by “e” and/or “i.” They have a “w” sound when surrounded by “a,” “o,” and/or “u.” Those are the standard rules. Now, the exceptions. Munster Irish always pronounces both combinations as a “v.” Also, generally speaking, the combinations do make a “v” sound no matter their neighbouring vowels when in names. Just depends on the dialect and even the person’s preference, really.

Haló, friend! I come from Gweedore in the Donegal Gaeltacht. I’ve been taught the rules of pronunciation and will be happy to explain how Aoibheann can be pronounced. I say “can” because we have so many dialects and sub-dialects. If you want to go by the actual pronunciation rules, which is how I speak then you would pronounce in the following manner: EEvan or EEvawn I will now explain. The combination “aoi” is pronounced like the English “ee” in “meet.” When the consonant cluster “bh,” when slender (surrounded by “e” and/or “i”), is pronounced like the English “v.” So far, this gives us “Eve.” A short, unstressed vowel that is followed by double n’s is pronounced long. In Ulster, we typically pronounce our long a’s like the “a” in English “cat.” The rest of Ireland will pronounce a long “a” as “aw” in English “dawn.” Most words are stressed on the first syllable-with some exceptions. All this combined gives us “EEvan” or “EEvawn.” Go gcuire Dia an t-ádh ort, a chara! May God put luck on you, friend! Fan sábháilte! Stay safe!

In pronouncing 'Siobhán', you seem to place the main stress on the first syllable instead of the second one, and pronounce 'bh' as 'w' instead of 'v'. Can the pronunciation vary depending on the county?

We have many ways of pronouncing words and phrases. The actual rule is that most words should be stressed on the first syllable. There are some exceptions. I believe I heard someone from Munster say that they stress the second syllable. I’m Ulster Irish from Gweedore County Donegal. The “bh” sound, when surrounded by a, o, and/or u, is typically a “w” sound in Connacht and Ulster-except in names. Usually, in names, the “bh” is a “v” sound no matter the neighbouring vowels. Siobhán is actually following the rules when she pronounces her name as she does.
