How to Say No to Your Boss RESPECTFULLY (Blow them away with this!)
How to say no to your boss respectfully, politely, and gracefully is a tough task. In this video, I explain how to say no to your manager and navigate tough conversations with your manager by signalling and setting healthy boundaries with your boss. The best way to do this is learning how to say no to your boss without actually saying no. As a result, you learn how to stop being a pushover by being too nice and feeling bullied at work.

My boss doesn’t seem to care that I have too many projects going on at once so they throw more at me. I am the only one that can do what I do at the company with xray technology and I just want to find out how to say no more. This is enough and you will hurt my quality if you push me more. I have been fearful because it feels like a I’m just a number environment.

Depending on your level within the org, asking boss to reprioritize for you does not bode well. Instead, take the initiative to reprioritize for them with supporting rationale, and then present. At that point it makes it a bit easier for the manager to agree and also demonstrates your proactiveness. A win win.
@DrJonTam
@DrJonTam Месяц назад
That’s a great point. Agreed that the level definitely matters. The conversation at higher levels would be understanding the manager’s pain point and proactively prioritizing and solving for them.

I’ve been working in this warehouse for about a 2 weeks and we are allowed to say no to anything we don’t feel comfortable doing. This week I was asked if I would be interested in forklifting. I said idk which was leaning more towards no yet they’re being very persistent in getting me to do it. I’m allowed to say no but I have problems saying no at the same time. I’m very comfortable with the position I’m currently in and I don’t know how to say no respectfully and reasonably.

I say no all the time. One of the ways I do so in a work setting is, "I am not going to be able to get to this done today and/or at this moment, however, I can have this to you by this date. Please let me know if this presents as an issue." OR, If it is a time sensitive issue, "I can handle this for you today, do you mind if we bring in "John- another team member" to assist me with project A to ensure we stay on deadline for this project?"

I have worked for some ruthless attorneys who would be like, “Well, just get it all done”, so I’m not sure this video is very empowering for me! Bully bosses are a problem because they don’t care about your issues - they will just leave it all in your lap! I am a conscientious and helpful person, but I don’t know what being agreeable has to do with this issue or why we have to take a test about that? I mean, what are we supposed to do in the situation? I think this could happen to any type of personality?
@DrJonTam
@DrJonTam Год назад
It’s got everything to do with the it. People who are disagreeable have a much easier time saying no to anyone, including their bosses. If the boss say “just get it all done”, then they’ll negotiate and get something out of it. They’ll also be able to tell their bosses straight-faced “It won’t get done, or won’t get done well. Get someone else or drop something off my plate.” If the boss forces it, they’ll just ignore them and tell them “see, I told you.” If they get penalized or fired, it’s a lawsuit headed the boss’ direction. No boss wants to deal with that.
@JesusSaves77799
@JesusSaves77799 Год назад
@@DrJonTam Ah great! Thank you for that explanation. I didn’t see that explanation in the video so I was confused. So do you think that being disagreeable at times is good? Also, I don’t think in the US we can sue a boss if we get fired unless it’s due to a civil rights violation of protected classes or another gross violation because we are “At Will” employees often (unless in a Union, for example)? Also, suing a boss takes a lot of money and time I would think? Are there any other strategies than an employee can use for leverage would you say? Threatening to leave a negative (but true) Google review? (Those can really hurt a company). Or calling the health department on them if the boss threatens to fire them without good cause? Are there good, hard core ways to fight back if getting abused? Thank you very much!! 🙏

First you have to say yes then at the end if you always say yes you are too agreeable? You have to be able to negotiate that’s what your talking about. To negotiate you have to be able to walk away! How? You have to have an option in your back pocket!! Best advice I’ve ever heard. Beat advice I can ever give to my kids. Teach them that employment is a 2 way st. Easier said than done? The I wonder why they don’t learn this in school. Hmm. See Horace Mann!

Hello Dr Jon Tam! I seen you comment on Kati Morton's video. And I read your info. You are a highly educated person. I would like to hear your thoughts on Kati. When watching her videos have you noticed anything unethical about her? If you have not, please watch her video on self-diagnosis.
@DrJonTam
@DrJonTam 4 года назад
Hey there, I've only watched several of her videos in the past so I don't have enough information to comment on her ethics. I watched her video on self-diagnosis and she is right that the clinician and patient need to work together because, at the end of the day, only the patient knows what's going on inside. Also, if the patient disagrees with an external diagnosis, assuming it's nothing serious and they're not a risk to others and themselves, they can generally go find someone else until they get the diagnosis they want. Lots of people self-diagnose, and of the issues emerge such as the barnum-forer effect (you can do a quick google for clarification) when seeking confirmation bias. At the end of the day, working with people is difficult when the main source of data is from the patient themselves. It's not like in the medical sciences where you can run an MRI and retrieve physical samples to examine the problem. If you're suggesting she's self-promoting on a sensitive topic, at the end of the day, what she offers is free and while she may sell further services later, it's up to the individual whether they want to purchase anything or not.
@baldassarre256
@baldassarre256 4 года назад
Thank you Dr Jon Tam for your time, I really do appreciate it. I'm worried about how someone in a fragile mental state might interpret her statements. if you self-diagnose, what do you self diagnose yourself with, then what are the steps you take next. Unfortunately it's far too easy for a person to obtain pharmaceuticals online. Well I suppose you could see where I'm going with that. with that said I still have my concerns. once again let me thank you for replying. PostScript Actually I should apologize. Perhaps, unconsciously I was trying to get you to confirm my bias. the intersection of social media and mental health both fascinates and frightens me.
@DrJonTam
@DrJonTam 4 года назад
@@baldassarre256 No worries. I understand your concerns about mental health and social media. If you break down what she's saying, it's the fact that people are self-diagnosing anyways. If someone chooses to purchase meds on a self-diagnosis, they bear the responsibility. People are doing it on a daily basis already via approaches like homeopathy, naturopathy, alternative medicine, or even what supplements they take. They have the freedom to do so, but freedom can also be scary because that means bearing responsibility for your choices. If I'm to nitpick her video, I think she could have scripted it better rather than winging it.

Dr. Oxford here clearly padding his vids to maximize his monetization, and he does it using disrespectfully obvious techniques familiar from vids by and for children.
