How to scrap a CRT TV - Whats inside and whats it worth? 

So between gas and time driving around grabbing these tvs, then time spent breaking them up and apart, then gas and time going to the scrap yard, you're making how much per hour? I guess if you have nothing to do or are just committed to scrapping it's worth it....but for most, not a lot of money to be had.

Interesting channel, I gotta say i love your screen name lol. I got a CRT Sony 36inch and was thinking about taking it apart as its way too heavy to carry, its over 300lbs. It was Sony's last cutting edge HDTV in the crt tube format, I paid about 2 grand for it brand new in 2003, hard to believe i paid that much for a tube tv and now its just sitting in a spare room collecting dust. So i have that tv and two more 32 inch tv's in the basement and two smaller tv's with the vhs combo deal that i will dismantle soon, thanks to your video. By the way, was reading some of the comments from a few smart mouths, amazing how rude people can get even in such a helpful kind of DIY video. Keep up the good job with videos, hopefully it'll help people learn how to do things like this instead of hurting the beautiful earth we been blessed with.

I came here thinking you are an electronic guy and will tell me how to salvage chips, speakers, testing if they still work and use it in other projects etc. But this has been educational too.

Also the transformers inside a crt can step the voltage up to a very high voltage which is usually anywhere between 600 volts to all the way up to 1000s of volts so make sure the tv is unplugged before opening it up

Its good practice to break the seal on the tube anyway. Prevents implosion risk and renders the tube fairly harmless.

How long is a while? I have a tv that hasn't been plugged in for atleast a week is it okay at that point?

One thing ive learned is not to hold on to the TV when youre cutting the vaccum wire(the line that runs between the board and the tube)youll get a small shock.

You should check with your yard about the ferrite in the tv. It's made from ceramic and steel and some yards pay up to $6.50/lb

Those black boxes also contain two silver contacts along with the number 1 copper

"We're looking eight cents". That's a tremendous amount of work for $3.75. Not to mention having to dispose of all the waste. If you do two tvs an hour, you're making minimum wage. And they take up a lot of room to store. Are you sure this is worthwhile?

exactly, it's a hobby! Make a little money, clean up the environment, and getting to work with your hands. It's a win win for everybody.

The 'electrical tape' on the degausing wire is not actually electrical tape. It is a self bonding raw rubber/silicone tape. It is softer and thicker than electrical tape. It cuts very easily, especially if you use a hooked 'linoleum' blade in your utility knife. Put one end in a vise, or clamp it to a bench. Then pull on the gable to keep it straight and put some tension on it. Then slice the insulation. (my wife needed some jewelry making wire, so I grabbed the degaussing cable from a Panasonic ~24" flat screen CRT, and got her about 400-500 feet of very nice wire) The 'wide' portion of a degaussing cable is usually a flat strip of plastic about an inch wide. No sense in loosing money on the scrap price, just remove it. The degaussing cable is just a coil of wire intended to ground the inherent static generated by a CRT. It is TOO simple to short a potential charge in a TV or monitor to risk electrocution. A screwdriver and a piece of wire is all you need. Robbie, you may have done 500 TV's without incident, but what about #501? I'm not a 'electrocution beware' guy like many on RU-vid, but I've repaired computer monitors for 6-8 years when I was a computer consultant. The guy who taught me repair had 30 years experience, and I helped him off the floor one time after a 22" Trinitron lifted my 250# buddy off his feet, and threw him back 4-5 feet one day. If you are salvaging parts for re-use, do NOT use an anti-static grounding strap when working on CRTs. The grounding strap makes a shorter path to ground for the 30-40,000 volts from the flyback. Also, something I learned, just this morning. Put one hand behind your back when grounding a CRT. That way, if you do get zapped, it won't go through your heart.

I was disassembling a TV and trying to get a a small circuit board of the end of the tube. The tube cracked and I heard a hissing sound and I got a bit scared. So I watched this video and learned a few things. Thanks for posting it. And I am disposing of this TV once I break it into small pieces and get the saleable parts out of it. That is horrible that old analog TVs won't work with digital signals. And analog TVs need a digital receiver to watch tv, one more thing to plug in and more clutter.

if you bust the tube,turn the scorpion tip to downward on a hard surface put a covering over it and hit it with a sledgehammer the implosion will direct downward you dont have to hit very hard.

I took the whole tv apart and I'm almost positive the tv yoke is aluminum coated with copper, the degaussing wire around the tv also seems to be aluminum coated with copper.

also, I found a blackish powdery stuff on an old crt tv. is this normal? it cleaned off pretty nicely when ran it under the shower.

Great Vid Robbie! I've noticed that Sony TVs have the highest quality scrap with good weight on the low grade boards and thick Copper Cables inside. At least in the USA your wiring is copper insulated. Here in Australia it's almost always aluminium wire.

You could wind speaker inductors from those transformer wire I think. Perhaps you could make a copper smelter and create some useful copper items or art etc. :)

Anyone reading today, CRT TV's especially Sony Trinitrons should NOT be scrapped. They still have a market (that is growing for retro gaming) and they are worth more than $4 and you don't have to spend a half an hour destroying them. Granted some TV's can't be given away but if it's a desired CRT TV you should def. sell it.

the only thing I don't like about the scrappers where I live is they leave behind the picture tube and all that broken glass on the street. sometimes I pull the sets apart for parts, fixing tv's is my hobby. but I put the back cover on. There's really no reason to break the tube, usually you can loosen the screw on the yokd and pull it off.

Don't see how it could possibly be worth bothering with. It would cost you more for gas to pick up this garbage and then deliver the recovered materials than you could ever get out of it

Eye protection and hearing protection is recommended when taking apart a crt television because there's always a chance that you could do something to make the crt implode

defend+some comes are glued to the tube so the posts usually on bigger one have to be snapped off before you can twist the cone.sometimes inserting a flathead screwdriver between the cone and the tube and gently twisting it right and left will break it loose.

In my area Long Island NY transformers are only .09 cent a pound..18lbs being ONLY 1.68 kinda pis.....ed me off...it was alot of unsoldering to get that..and I think No 2 copper is ONLY $1.60 now...this is terrible....it is not like it use to be..oh and cars are .07 cent a pound..that would be like 200$ for a car now..

Be careful with the capacitors and the crt itself because those can carry thousands of volts and can actually kill you so use caution

I doubt you could even pay for the calories you used with those $3.75.

If you'd stop cutting up those degaussing wires you could use a simple utility knife to strip the entire thing much easier than you did with your little stripping tool and you wouldn't waste any of the copper that is in it. (They're much easier to strip with a utility knife when they're in one circular piece.) I've cut open at least 500 of those things...all with a utility knife. If you insist on continuing to use your stripping tool, stop bending the hell out of the wire before you strip it. It'll slide through your tool much more easily. Have fun!

Wow and someone like me likes to SMASH stuff that is no good, or NOT worth money LOL!. I used 2 scrap 4 cash in the late 1999-2005 time frames, I had fun then. It was worth it for money,fun smashing something carefully and I actually had my own minivan.

working flybacks coud sell for 5- 10 dollars and the other transformers are worth more then there weight in copper so try to salvage them undamaged and sell em for more. the rest you can sell per pound. also the speakers could be worth more if reused for other projects.

If its a working CRT, don't take it apart. Give it to someone that actually appreciates this technology. There are reasons why some people still want these, especially for playing retro games.

You may not make a lot of money but you sure do practice your math...

of course only if the tv is broken beyond repair that you want to do this so you get 3 dollars by just destroying it which is fun so that's literally better than free.

I know this is an old video, however, has an arcade Enthusiast this just makes me cringe. You can't even buy McDonald's Happy Meal for this price and yet you're throwing out some really good stuff. People are stupid they don't understand that sometimes the glass tubes and these other components can be transferred to another set. Again being in the arcade sing we're always looking for good tubes try and transfer and hears people smashing them up for a few pennies

Can you use a Soldering iron and not ur hands.I'm an 11year old electronic hobbyist and I salvage unstripped wire and those electromagnets u hammered (that part reaaaaaallllllllllly pissed me off, scientific my ass) and those transformers u just ripped like it was nothing and those speakers from TVs.
