Join Tribble Painting's Project Manager, Aaron as he takes you from the first step in scraping paint off natural wood siding. Make sure to do your research into proper tools and methods for the surface you want to scrape. Each scraping project is different than the last. This is one of the most important steps in getting a new paint job and doing it correctly can save you loads of money down the road.
Tribble Painting recommends two different types of scraping for projects like these. A nifty 5-in-1 carpenters tool and a carbide scraper, both of which can be purchased from any painting or home supply store. To protect the ground and ensure clean up is easy as possible, we always keep a roll of painter's plastic and painters tape needed to get the job done right. The orange painter's tape is rated highest for adhesion in our toolkit to ensure it sticks to brick and other external surfaces that require more stick with little risk of pulling off paint when you are done.
Take your time, and you won't be doing it again in a few months! Good luck with your next project!

Nice to see a DIY video that isn’t completely scripted. Salt of the earth right there.

I have over 20 years experience doing this and I approve of this method. Good video and good information. It's all about the prep. And don't caulk the horizontal seams underneath. That can trap moisture.

I was spending *hours* making sure every last bit of paint was removed before. I had no idea you could leave paint as long as it wasn't loose. Thank you for the instruction!

What if you have a great many layers of different colors, and the whole thing is a mass of cracks to the point it is a solid surface of little squares of many paint layers... but it doesn't want to come off with a scraper? Adding another layer to the mass of cracked paint layers? Or what? Thanks.

Great question! Parts that aren't able to be scrapped off are still bonded and giving some protection. With many paint layers making a side of a home look like a multi-colored onion with all the previous colors showing, you have many options. Houses with many layers on them are usually old, and we always assume lead paint is involved. I would test the paint and see if there is any need for precautions and I would remove the option of sanding down the paint since it's quite messy and hard to control with needed protections/containment for lead paint removal. If you want to get many more years out of the siding without worrying about having to keep it painted and looking nice, there could be a chance that a full replacement of the siding can save you in the long run without the need to keep repainting.

How would I do walls. I have pink/gray paint that’s peeling. I just want to make it all white. What would be the best tool I have a 5-in 1 but is there any recommendations. Thank you

Hi Blood. Your 5-in-1 will serve you well for interior or exterior peeling paint. Make sure to scrape from all angles so that you don't leave any loose paint. Good Luck!

Is this lead paint? Is the process different for that?

You can easily use the scraper, upside down, and scrap the bottoms of those laps, much faster

What are you thoughts of pressure washing?
@TribblePaintingCompany
@TribblePaintingCompany 3 года назад
We wash all of our projects, including the one in this video! Making sure you get all the dirt and any mildew/algae that may be growing is critical to the painting process. This doesn't always have to be pressure washing, a mild bleach & water solution can be a great tool as well. Trying to paint a dirty surface never goes well. Using a pressure washer can help speed up the process when used properly. If you rent a pressure washer or using one for the first time, please be careful. It can damage a persons skin and even damage an exterior of a home. Knowing what type of surface you're pressure washing and how to make sure you don't damage it, is mandatory before starting each and every project for us. Hope this helps!

What do you recommend for wood siding, brushing or sprayer

Hi Wanda. Great question and I have one as well. What type of wood siding are you working with?
@wandadelacruz2486
@wandadelacruz2486 2 года назад
@@TribblePaintingCompany I honestly don’t know. It’s a very old Victorian home built in 1903, which has been painted over the years by previous owners. The last owner had it painted by professionals and according to them was not long when the paint started to peel, therefore I don’t know how the paint was applied. Right now I’m doing some research as to the proper way to paint wood siding. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
