How to scribe skirt boards into any Stairway flawlessly!!

I have a doorway at the bottom of the staircase with only about six inches of clearance between the threshold and the riser on the bottom step. Clearly I am unable to use the scribe and slide technique you detailed. You mentioned in one reply that you have alternate methods. Could you help me out with this? My prior efforts resulted in a lot of wasted time with a very poor fit. I tried using a framing square and a Speed Square in combination to transcribe the tread and riser surfaces onto the skirt board. Clumsy and did not result in a good fit. Perhaps a way to build a template??

How much would you charge for stairway similar to this?including material.

When you cut bottom angle does it not throw the tread marks off ?

Just wanted to share how I solved the doorway issue in my other post. I used a 10 inch wide strip of 3/8 plywood as a template and attached it to the wall resting on the noses of the treads as in your method, except the lower end rested on the next to last stair nose instead of the last. With the top and bottom of the template marked with masking tape, I then scribed the tread lines per your instructions, then removed the template and cut the lowest scribed line, then slid the template down one full tread depth (11 3/4 in) and reattached it to the wall using the masking tape reference lines. I then scribed the risers per your method, then removed and cut the remaining scribed marks on the template. I checked the fit and it was perfect. I then laid the template on the skirt board and marked the cut lines, then slid it down one tread to mark the missing tread line. I cut the skirt board and checked the fit to make sure no adjustments (trimming) were needed, then attached it using narrow crown staples. Thanks for sharing your method.

@Dan Hall Why do you set the scribe to the bottom tread height and run with it for the rest of them? Bc isn’t the bottom tread 3/4 less or something. Or do you reset the scribe for every other tread ? Thanks

I have an aok staircase with no skirt board. The treads are bullnosed and this makes for a difficult skirt conversion. I don't want to wallpaper against the risers and treads, but this project seems impossible because of the bullnose risers.

Can this be done with a doorway at the top of the stairs? I have door trim above the top step. Can I extend the board in the doorway or does it need to be flat against the wall

Unfortunately, the treads in the stairwell we're looking to do this in protrude a bit past the riser AND they're rounded. Makes the project much more challenging (which is why we've delayed it for so long).

That's great, but what about going around the bullnose?

How high do I mark the top riser because all my steps are different dimensions

I’m working with steps that vary in height. Most of the risers are equal in height except the top, bottom and one midway. Thanks for the tutorial

what a waste of time ...and that nail scratch and that tiny thin piece or wood is a balls ...simply use you adjustable sq with a pencil is way better ..especially when all risers are different height...
