This was wonderful to watch. One of the best tutorials I've seen yet for sculpting. Extremely informative and entertaining. I enjoyed how it kept my attention so well. I would love it if you did more, especially the mold making and casting process.
Wow Jonathan. From an artist point of view, I REALLY enjoyed this video. From the content, the process to the editing. Wish you made more of these. You're one HELL of a sculptor!
*Another way to see if your work is symmetrical is to put it infront of a mirror. Because your eye sees the design for presumably many hours, seeing it infront of a mirror highlights to your brain big difference and noticable assymetrical parts. Works for me
Yes, mirrors can give amazing new perspectives on virtually all art processes. Much like walking away for a bit and returning with fresh ears in music production. New ways of seeing the same art is always beneficial, IMO. But then again, maybe too much focus is given to symmetry! (like the face half mirrored compared to reality). A little subtle asymmetry is also pretty golden!
I am finally going to start my first sculpt after watching your videos. Thanks man. I have always wanted to do this. Very helpful watching your process
that was awesome! been a fan of your work for a while now jonathan, i always see your work on ebay starting cheap, then selling for way more than i can afford lol maybe one day
LONG LONG time ago, i ordered WED Clay online and paid out the ASS for the Shipping just so i could try it out, cause i heard so many awesome things about it, got it in the mail and i HATED IT... i asked myself "how on earth can anyone make amazing masks outta this shit!? it dries out so fast, it cracks all to pieces, it cant hold Detail" so i threw it out in the yard in disgust.. well about 10 or 15 years later i saw this and i was like "ive grown a LOT as a Sculptor and an artist in General.. i was young when i tried it, im gonna try it again" so i bought some and it's FANTASTIC, one of the most enjoyable sculpting mediums ive ever used, and ive used them ALL *though i still love Monster Clay and Castilene more, especially for small figures/toys/Maquettes" but come to find out, the people who sold me the "Wed Clay" Back then... actually had SCAMMED ME. they sold me fucking POTTERY CLAY and called it WED Clay. so its no fucking wonder i hated it for sculpting! so my advice is two fold. if you think you hate something or cant use it well, try again later on in life, you might find out you LOVE IT later on.. or that you was simply lied too somehow. if i had not saw this video and try it out again, id have missed out on such a fun Medium.
I love the eyes on this sculpt dude, i think you could sculpt a mean the dark knight returns batman with the wrinkles and the weathered, weary, pissed off look.
Comments ........ every one want to see time laps now days .......oh well ...dude that's fucking awesome love the video keep it up .......maybe one day a can own one of ur masks.......one love
Is there any chance that another video similar to this one could be made in the future? I absolutely love watching people sculpt as it always gives me inspiration to pick up my tools.
Amazing talent... Enjoyed that, I want to sculpt a michael myers mask 1978 to make myself a mask but I keep doubting myself as I've never done it before... How should I go about it? The same as that but copy from a picture of the mask? Thanks.
Great vid and sculpt. Maybe you could help me with some advice, but I'm looking to turn my wife into Medusa for halloween, but I don't want all the snakes just hanging off her head. I want some coiled and posed, but how can I mount them so that'll work? I plan to do a forehead prosthetic that moves up into the first row of snakes, but what could I use to mount the snakes around the rest of her head?
I have so many questions!! I also grew up wanting to create monsters and horror films , I am now 35 with a career I don’t love but gives me money and I have now the time to pursue monster making and my dream to finally create my own horror film! Can you produce more mask making videos?!
I've only done computer modelling with Mudbox, zbrush, Rhino 3D, and other modelling software, but have wanted to try actual, physical character modelling with clay. I know everyone has their own opinion on how to do things, but I honestly want to know your opinion if I should start with WED clay vs the other options. I know water based clay dries quickly. I think my early attempts at this will take weeks/months/hopefully not decades! trying to model life-sized humanoid shaped heads, with major "alien" type features. I will have to make a "basic" mold of my head (or a head) to build/sculpt up onto, I'm guessing. I'd love some input, if you have time.
This foam base is made by you? Have a kind of guide video you can share ? I can imagine clay, gyps negative but the foam kind I am not sure what I have to search for . Thanks
I'm 13, since I have to make career choices now I decided a while ago on SFX and I'd love to do a project like this in summer. Any tips to get started ?
Best thing you can do if you're going for SPFX is to learn Z-Brush or one of those 3D sculpting programs. Clay sculpture is on its way out sadly.. though some people will always be there to buy masks sculpted traditionally. but not as many as we'd like sadly. if i could learn Z-Brush i would, but i think im too stupid to figure it out lol
I'm going to a special effects school and part of it is creating busts like this, is there any way I can practice before I get there and do it for real?
I imagine in the end it would come down to personal preference, but I'm curious if there are specific reasons you prefer to work with a wet clay vs. an oil clay. I'm very interested in trying this and currently have an oil based clay that I'm not too happy with (too sticky). I'm thinking of picking up some Monster Clay, but again I'm curious as to what you prefer about wet clay. Thanks for any feedback.
You're video is very inspiring and it is a wonderful sculpture! i have an important question: I tried to sculpt a creture mask myself from wet clay like you did here. the problem was that after i finished the sculpture i went along with making a 2 part plaster mold, the sculpture began to dry, crack and shrink cause it took me a long time to make this prosess. by the time i finished the clay wall and molded the first half - it was all ruined. can i get and advice from you on how to make it right? i try to work with monster clay that never dries.. but i just cant get the technique right. wet clay comes much more natural for me. the thing is that when i work on the molding the whole sculpture gets dry and cracks.. thak you for you're help ! Yotam.
I'm the same I can really only work with wed clay to get things looking good. Next time you sculpt try spritzing it with water in a spray bottle ever now and again, especially the areas that you haven't touched in a while, then whenever you're not working on it either spritz it and cover it with a garbage bag or loosely wrap it in moist paper towels. Should keep it dry/crack free especially when building up the retaining wall. Just try not to get it too wet or it could destroy fine details.
diggin the video big time but why did you put that metallic-tube-sound everywhere? Creepy sound for glamourshot, sure, but not throughout the video, ears are bleeding. :D
The process that he's using, and is practically always used in the special effects world, is to sculpt with clay over the foam armature and then make a two (or multi) part mold with plaster (or fiber glass etc.), and then casting, in the case of a monster mask, silicone or latex into the mold for the finished piece. So in the end the original clay sculpture gets destroyed, you can take the clay off of the foam armature and then use both again.
