Fantastic demo, really helpful. The pinning of the search results to do sorting by date and search on inserted image text was particularly helpful. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for delving into the less obvious functions. I didn't know about pinning search results and sorting from there. I am generally impressed with Onenote's search capabilities. I use a work notebook with 8 section groups so I have tons of pages, and I'm usually able to find what I need, though I really need to cull some of the pages.
Thanks for the comments. Yes, cleaning up old notes and keeping the notebook organized is important. I've got a video planned for this on my list, so keep an eye out for it. Thanks!
Hi! can you help me? I always attach PDF files into oneNotes. When I try to search for a word, I can't seem to find all of the results. For example, when I search for the word "good" it brings me the pages that have the word in them. But the same page have like a 20 matching result but I can't go through them fast, I can't jump right to the word in the same page. How can I go through all of the results in the same page?
Can you tell me why I can not search for text in pictures on my MacBook? When I embed either PDF or Pictures Onenote for Mac will not find text in images or PDF files. I might have to go back and use Evernote or Apple Notes.
Great video but once you've found your notes, how do you delete any you don't want? I've looked for a delete button and even right clicked on the page in the search results that I want to get rid of but I can find no option for delete!!
One feature of OneNote search you didn't mention but that is very disturbing to me is the fact that all special characters are ignored in the search. So for example # or dashes or brackets. I've tried to use these to simulate Evernote style tags to tag pages rather than lines in a note (like using hashtags) but I did not find a good way to achieve this yet.
I miss this feature a lot in OneNote Desktop. It is available in OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote Android but not in the unified desktop version. Very disappointing.
Can I search partial string/word in OneNote? Example, can I type face and I can find Surface? Searching part of the word, not the beg of the word. Can it be done? ~Thanks
I have terms like "abcxyz" without a space in between and if I search for "xyz" or "*xyz" it doesn't show me "abcxyz". How can I search for these terms?
3:18min to 3:50min Body contains phrase "digital printing", how do go to the row showing "digital printing" automatically without scrolling? 3:38 to 3:50min you need to scroll down to show the "digital printing" (below the text Excess) because the top parts are showing single text digital/printing. Would it be possible to not highlight single text digital/printing and immediately just automatically scroll to the row showing "digital printing" or only highlight "digital printing"? Thanks.
Hi Jason - I'm not sure if I understand your question. But if you don't want to pick up single word for digital or printing, you can enclose them in quotation marks like "digital printing" in the search.
Hi Pratik - you can pin the search results by hitting (Alt+O) then apply different sort and scroll from there. Unfortunately, you can't employ ctrl F to search for specific text within the search results.
Thanks so much for all your videos, Andy, I've definitely found them helpful! One question - do you know if there's a way to be able to pull in or link items that you've tagged into one page? I don't find the "find a tag" function to do what I need it to do, but would love if there's a way to have a summary page where you can have all your tagged items of the same category to refer back to instead of every individual page you tagged them.
Hi Stacy, there is an option to *create a summary page* of all tags. When you click on *find tags* command, the *create summary page* option will show up at the bottom of the *tags summary pane* . Although we can have this summary page grouped by the tags, we can't filter to show specific tags. So this summary page can end up being very long. But I think this is the closest thing to what you're looking for. Hope this helps.
Thanks, another very useful video. I noted that you have various notebook names displayed on the left hand side panel. I could find a way to do it. Will appreciate if you can share how to arrange notebooks on the left hand side panel. Thanks for the video.
Hi Ram - if you're using OneNote desktop (2016) version, you can select the notebook name on the top left corner and select the push pin to keep the pane open and locked. Hope this helps. Thanks.
Thanks. Let me research this a bit. Coincidentally, my kid is starting to use OneNote in her class, so I can monitor how she uses it and share if there are helpful tips.
Hi Luis - OneNote for Windows 10 has the Find Tag feature built in to the search field. You can type the tag name directly into the search field and you should see the tag appear in the search suggestions
