A well seasoned cast iron skillet is a thing of beauty. It's black like coffee and nothing sticks to it. However, when you first purchase a pan, it doesn't start like that. You need to add a few layers of seasoning before it's ready for use. That's what Dennis shows you how to do in this video - apply the first layers of seasoning to get you on your way!

DIRECTIONS
1. Place aluminum foil on the bottom of the oven and preheat the oven to 200°F / 93°C.
2. Wash your skillet with soap and water and dry well.
3. Place into the oven for 20 minutes.
4. Remove from oven and coat it in a very thin layer of oil (flax seed, canola, Crisco, lard, etc).
5. Preheat the oven to 450°F / 232°C.
6. Wipe off as much oil as possible using a lint free paper towel (such as these: amzn.to/3acUTFI ), a towel, or an old shirt
7. Place the pan face down into the oven for an hour.
8. After the hour is up, turn off the oven and let pan cool with the oven.
9. Repeat steps 6-8 until your desired seasoning level!

Yes. thin layers of oil if you use a liquid oil. For storage just use shortening as it doesn't dry out and become sticky gum that is immovable. Always heat and wipe with paper towel then add a fresh layer of oil before using. As always, great video.

Yes! The lodge that come preseasoned are only 'preseasoned' so that they dont rust. They DO have another line thats supposedly already seasoned for cooking (havent tried them though). If you have a high end cast iron pan from a small company, it's likely seasoned and ready for cooking!

so how long can a skillet stay seasoned while not being used? does a seasoning have an expiration time period? I seasoned mine but it has gone unused for about 4 months now.
@BlackTieKitchen
@BlackTieKitchen 4 года назад
Depends. Sometimes the fat can go rancid if it has been too long. Youd have to inspect it - it could probably use a fresh layer or two. Might need to be stripped and reseasoned though - really dependa on the conditions its been stored in.

No need! They all get the same treatment! Being scared of screwing it up is natural. Just go through the process and you'll see for yourself that it's not as bad as we think it's going to be. And worst case scenario - you can always start over because at the end of the day, it's literally just iron. There's nothing special about it! Trust me, just go through the process. Ive helped a few people who were TERRIFIED and are now glad they did it because they use their cast iron pans for EVERYTHING! If you need help, let me know!

Best video on seasoning a cast iron skillet I have seen in a long while!! Great questions!! What mixed drink would the Black Tie Kitchen make for sitting inside on quarantine?

The best drink is the one you enjoy and can get your hands on. Here: tequila, near 😅

When you clean the pan after cooking (while still hot) is there anything on the towel? Water or anything? Or just a dry paper towel in tongs?

No need to be afraid! If it rusts, dont throw it away! Im planning on filming a video on how to restore a skillet as well

@BlackTieKitchen
@BlackTieKitchen 2 года назад
Dont need to put it in the oven - just dry it on the stovetop until all the water is gone and put a dab of oil, rub it in! I have a video planned for showing how to clean and maintain it coming soon!
