Did an even shorter version of this and made the best omelet ever. Slid off the pan better than Teflon. Thanks for the videos.

*That is why I made Stainless steel seasoning/maintenance playlist because many people did not know that you could season stainless steel pans. So if you know anybody else that doesn’t know please share The video with them, so we can get parents away from cooking food on chemically coated Teflon pans. Especially the ones that are worn out and have the Teflon chipping off into their food. Thanks for watching comments and then subscribing it means a lot Chris!*

Normally I do cast iron cooking, but I made these for that purpose. Please share this on social media or with your friends that have chemically coated Teflon pans, and stainless steel cookware and they’re in the cabinet collecting dust because they don’t know that you can season it. Just treat it like cast iron and don’t use soap. If things start to stick let it soak in warm water, and tell you can wash it off with a sponge. When you heat up the pan, if there are any cooties on the pan they will burn off lol*

Been using cast iron for a couple of years now, ever since I decided to get serious about cooking, but I’d never had a stainless steel until I gave myself a pan for Father’s Day. I too was unaware that I could season stainless steel, so I’m glad I found your videos! Going to use your advanced method to season it though, as I need it tonight, but I’ll let you know how it goes. Also, I can’t wait to work my way through your videos. I’ve got a pan that’s at least 85 years old, and I love the nostalgia I feel when cooking with it. 👍🏻

Hi! Just bought a ss pan and it had a sticker right in the middle. I took it off and I was getting ready to follow your instructions. My question is: do I clean the pan before (it has a sticker stain) or just proceed with seasoning? Or do I clean with Bar Keepers Friend and THEN season it. Sorry if it's a stupid question!

*It should say in the video how often but it will wear off because it is not cast iron. You can make it last longer by treating it like cast-iron and don’t use soap. When things start to stick a little bit it soak and eventually you can use a sponge to wash it off. Glad you found a beginners version it’s OK if you screw up and it becomes really sticky because he burnt the oil to the pan. I know I did the first time! Bought a new stainless steel 14" skillet for the church community breakfast we volunteer to cook. I am seasoning it tonight for tomorrow's breakfast and see how it will do on the commercial gas grates. Making scrambled eggs for 50+ is a cooking feat for amateur line cooks and I am hoping having a good skillet will make our eggs come out more tasty and a little less "crusty". Thanks for the tutorial!

I just moved to my new house and ditched all my teflon pans. I invested into cast iron and stainless steel pan. I read alot about cast iron before buying it to make sure i will have knowledge to season and take care of it, only tried it one yet. On the other hand, i have never heard about seasoning stainless steel and never thought about googling it, but i used it for a few weeks and everything was sticking like crazy (you can imagine my reaction, since i was used to teflon:S) i though i wasted my money, i even scratched it accidentally once trying to get rid of burns. I could not let it go so i found your channel. I am relieved to know i will be able to try seasoning it. Now what concerns me is how long this seasoning will last as process of seasoning will take a lot of time it seems also in my country there is no Bon Ami, so I hope stiff brush i bought for my lodge will fit here too :) Please let me know if there is anything I should now before giving this pan a second chance. Thank you!

+inguracka don't use a steel brush on stainless steel pan it will scratch it. I have a cast iron cooking video selection to show you how to do those and the seasoning will last forever. but on stainless steel I'm afraid they will last for a while but not forever. That is up to you just get the skillet really clean before you do this and don't use soap on it after you clean it the first time just like cast iron because it will take away the seasoning. I season mine 6 times and they last a long time

Thank you for sharing all this information! I couldn’t figure out why the SS skillets I bought had everything sticking to them. My kids like to cook eggs a lot and ruined every ceramic pan I had with a metal spatula so I thought using only SS would be easy. I know Teflon is unhealthy plus I have a parrot so I would never take that chance. I’m so glad I found your channel and will definitely be subscribing. I actually just bought a new green ceramic coated skillet that I hope to return after seasoning the SS pans. I love all your tips on where to find lighter weight cast iron as I’ve been learning to cook with those too. I love Staub pots too but they are expensive. The field skillet I have is all rusted which surprises me as that was supposed to be a seasoned pan. I guess not, if I follow your instructions can I still use that rusted pan? I was going to contact field company but your way might be more efficient the way customer service works lately. I have my grandma’s SS farberware set and the handles are cracking off but nothing every sticks to her pans so I didn’t want to replace them until I found something to cook with. I try to use natural products only so I truly appreciate all your time with what you share. I am going to look for your instagram page as well.

I'm only on my 3rd smoking and I have caramelized yellowish stains. What should I do ? Is it because I used used oil ?
@CastIronCooking
@CastIronCooking 3 года назад
*No it’s because you burnt the oil to the pan. You want to take it off as soon as you see the first wisp of smoke. There shouldn’t be any smoking that means you didn’t take it off quick enough. Glad you contacted me because you need to do the stainless steel and cleaning video in the playlist at the end of this video, or it is also in the information cards while watching at any time. You will need the barkeepers friend in the video to strip down the old oil. I did exactly what you did the first time don’t worry. That is why I made the video to show how to clean. I didn’t want to waste all the hard work I did so I went ahead and cooked on it until food started to stick and then I stripped it down. Remember you don’t have to do all of the seasonings in one day. I never do.*

Hi thank you so much for this info! I have a couple of questions... Can you use bacon grease that's hardened? Or does it have to be fresh? Secondly I just want to make sure I have the process down right.... Seasoned pans, you soak and wipe clean, or use barkeeper's friend? Don't use soap or you will have to season again... Thank you for your time! 😊
@CastIronCooking
@CastIronCooking 4 года назад
*Yes you can. This bacon grease was hard and I just let it come to room temperature I think. Doesn’t matter. The barkeepers friend is when you are stripping down a pan to season. So naturally you won’t use it after cooking or you would strip down the seasoning. You had it right just soak and rinse. Until you get yourself an antique cast-iron skillet, so you only have to season it one time and have taken care of properly like my videos in the seasoning playlist for cast-iron it will last forever. I have a couple of pieces from the 1800s that I’m sure were cooked over an open fire cowboy style.All of the antique sir very light with a very smooth patina. I have a playlist on stripping it down and seasoning it if you ever get a chance to get one from the thrift store for a couple of dollars like I do. Just make sure they don’t wobble.*

Whoever expert at this, your reply are welcome :) I need a guide. Thank you! :)
@CastIronCooking
@CastIronCooking 5 лет назад
*First off you have to watch the whole video. I teach you how many times, and exactly how to season the pan. It doesn’t last forever like cast-iron, when you make it to the end of the video, you will see another video on how to season your cast iron skillet. There is no cheating or half measures to do this. If you want your cookware to look like mine, you must do exactly what I do of course. I’m so glad you made it to my channel Jelissa! Not a lot of females have the guts to do this, (proven by my gender demographics for my channel is 35% female only and 90% of that is stainless steel videos) they would rather serve their family toxic fumes in their food from their chemically coated pans, than doing a little extra work. Somehow along the line women stopped cooking with cast-iron and took the easy way out. Probably because now it takes two incomes to support a family, and there’s not much enough time. But if seasoned right it becomes non-stick. As long as you take care of it after cooking like in my stainless steel playlist and my cast iron seasoning/maintenance playlist. If you have any questions after watching the video then please do come and ask me here. You have an awesome week!*

I made this video for people that didn’t know you could season stainless steel cookware, so if you know somebody struggling please share this video with them. I've just bought a stainless steel skillet. On the paper that came with it it says not to leave it empty over the fire, because it might burn or explode. Isn't this seasoning almost like leaving it empty? Should I be worried if I do that?
@CastIronCooking
@CastIronCooking 8 лет назад
agatho00 no don't be worried. It sounds like you might not have a great quality Skillet because I've never had one come with instructions especially not one that says what your instructions say. but know this method has been used by restaurant chefs since before I was born and I'm 48. then when you get the hang of it I have another video just like this for people they have more experience doing it. you should also watch the how to clean a stainless steel Skillet in the information card in the top right corner of the video, so you will see how to clean it properly to keep the seasoning on after you use it. It is not like cast iron this evening will wear off and you will have to do it again after a while. Never use soap especially when you season it you have to let it soak and wash it off just like cast iron. anymore questions let me know! :-) PS as soon as it starts smoking take it off because if it sticks then you have to start all over again.

I just inherited 2 stainless steel pans that were about to hit the garbage because the person that bought them didn't know how to use them. I knew there must be a trick to it, and here it is. I learned cast iron about 2 years ago when I was the only taker on Grandma's old skillets and pot. Good lord, that big skillet is like lifting a small child on my arthritic hands so I was really hoping these stainless steel ones would be an decent option for regular use. My only question is, do they need a small top up layer of seasoning after each use, like cast iron, or no?

I decided not to try duck fat. You are right, it’s probably too greasy for this purpose. It’s Rougie duck fat which is similar to ghee, which I also have but don’t dear to try it either. I will keep going with almond oil. First layer looks shiny like a mirror. Almond oil has one of the highest smoke points of all oils. Can’t wait to try after final seasoning! In the past I throw away stainless steel pan as food was burning in it. I love SS pots for cooking soups, though. Long time ago I used cast iron pans, but forgot how my grandma and mom were seasoning them, I think they seasoned them couple of times using animal fat working it in with half yellow onion. Anyways, as I am not young today, cast iron is too heavy for me :-)

After that it will last longer because it is properly cleaned. I would use soap to rinse out the Bar Keepers Friend paste after you're done. After you're done cooking don't use soap just let it soak and some water and wash it out when it starts ticking again. then you will know it is time to use the Bar Keepers Friend.strip It Down and Season it back again.

@@CastIronCooking Thanks for the fast reply I'm really grateful. This morning I made some pancakes and it indeed became more stick so I will try to strip it, even watched your cleaning video. Dishwasher soap wont do much and we don't have Bar Keepers Friend here only similar, so I'm letting it soak in that. I thought about bleach but it destroys stainless so I quickly disposed of that idea. If it wont strip i will try it with sodium hydroxide(lye). I thought the soap will dissolve the layers because I've seen everywhere that it is not recommended to wash it with that but I think I overburnt the seasoning. *It is not like cast-iron where it last forever. I thought I mentioned it in the video, it all depends on how you treat it, as to how long it will last. Of course you treat it like cast-iron and don’t use soap. Most of my videos are with antique skillets so I’m over 100 years old, and none less than 60 to 70 years old. Most people today are uneducated on cast iron cookware, because home training is different now and the generation teaching our children to cook do not know how to cook themselves. I have a few videos with the new skillets Lodge sent me to review. After seizing that properly, treat it like cast-iron and don’t use soap. Let it soak if it burns a little bit and then clean it with a soap free sponge.If you can’t find barkeepers friend if you ever need to strip your pan down to the way it was, it makes it very easy and eventually the seasoning will wear off and you’ll need to do this. I prefer cast-iron pans because the seasoning last forever if done right. Remember you don’t have to do all six seasonings in one day I never have time to do that myself. Just don’t cook in it until it is done.

How do you clean it after cooking?
@CastIronCooking
@CastIronCooking 6 лет назад
With warm water just like you would a cast-iron pan same rules apply. The only difference is when I do my cast iron seasoning it lasts for a lifetime. In my cast-iron seasoning playlist there is a video with A Lodge scraper. You can use that on stainless steel or any other type pan. I burnt some potatoes really bad in the video because I fell asleep and I used that and soaked it for a while and it came right off without hurting seasoning. Sometimes I use a dedicated green scrubby that has had no soap on it ever and I use it lightly to clean my cast-iron and stainless steel pans. Of course never take a hot pan and pour water in it or it will warp the pan. Thanks for watching and commenting!

After season it do I need to water test the right heat before cooking egg or no need?

*No you don’t just a stupid thing on social media. We don’t have time for that in the restaurant. Heat the pan up slow as the best tip I can give you.*

Does one have to season the pan everytime before one cooks,or is it a one time thing when the pan is new?

How long does it take to smoke on low ? On low I wouldn’t think it can get hot enough to smoke . I guess I’m wrong , please let me know . Thanks

*It’s not a matter of how long it will take it’s just a matter of it not working. If you want the results I do exactly as I say of course. Too many people are always trying to change up the seasoning videos to suit their own taste and it never works out. When you do a how to video do it how they teach you. You don’t have to do all six seasonings at one time unless it is the only pan you’re cooking with and you just have to use it before then. I cook with cast-iron because it last forever I’ve done properly and cleaned properly after cooking. Just made the stainless steel seasoning videos for the ladies because so many of them have these pans sitting in the cupboard collecting dust or they throw them away all together. Thanks for taking the time to comment Nick I appreciate you!*

@@CastIronCooking I watched another video about to season or not to season and like a lot of things it depends . So I’ve been heating the pan till the floating water trick throw in some oil and a little butter and then throw in my food and it comes out great no stick . I haven’t tried a steak yet I usually use my cast iron for that , but I did fried eggs no stick slid right out of pan . And if I have a little residue left a little bar keepers and it cleans right up . I did try season the pan with lard but after it started to smoke and I took it off the burner it left a sticky residue. I guess I will try again . Thanks again for your videos

How hot does the pan have to be before adding the oil? Or it doesn't matter?
@CastIronCooking
@CastIronCooking 8 лет назад
+urbaniten Sorry! I have the oven at medium low it looks like on the burner. I do that for a better season, after I clean it properly using bar keeprs friend as stated in my other video, in the stainless steel cooking playlist. When you become a pro, I have a faster seasoning video as well. Thanks for watching! Slower is better and it doesn't matter as long as you take it off the burner as soon as it starts to smoke. :)

How often should one season the stainless steel pans? Like after every use you have to wash just with water and season it ?
@CastIronCooking
@CastIronCooking 4 года назад
*Treat it like cast iron, and don’t use soap when you clean it. If things start to stick let it soak for a **while.No** you don’t have to keep seasoning it every time, the heat polymerizes the seasoning to the pan. It won’t last as long is cast-iron, because of the surface that is why I cook with cast-iron skillet’s. Made these stainless steel videos for women that bought them, or got them as a present and when the food stuck they either threw away the pans or put them away in the cupboard! Lol*

Thank you for answering my question. Don’t have much experience with cast iron, bought it once and it got rusted after a couple months so threw it away. Sadly I can’t use cast iron pots and pans on my glass stove top. I have been using non-stick pots and pans but now want to transition to stainless steel for health reasons.
@CastIronCooking
@CastIronCooking 4 года назад
*You can use cast-iron on your Glass top stove, but you have to pick up the pan and put it down. There can be no sliding with a glass top stove. Yes it rusted because you didn’t take care of it properly like shown in my videos. Too bad you didn’t see my channel first! Also you probably bought a rough grainy skillet, when there are plenty of antiques out there at the thrift shop. There are also three brands that are making smooth skillets right now. One of them is in the description box on my Amazon store. It is by Staub if you ever want to give it a go again. My skillet rusted at first but I am not a quitter, and there is definitely no way and inanimate object is going to get the best of me! LOL also even using the beginners method I made here, I burnt the oil to the stainless steel pan. I didn’t quit on that either I just cooked on it because I didn’t want to waste it and then I stripped it down, like in the stainless steel cleaning video in the playlist.*

I tried with vegetable oil (maybe bad choice), and after allowing it to smoke for a bit and letting it to cool down, the surface became very sticky. So i smoked off more and surface has now become Black.. I stopped at this point. what all did i do wrong ? thanks...
