In this talk, artist Scott Mallory shows how rhythm can enrich our understanding of who we are. He argues that it is through rhythmic gestures that people can identify with an artist in a deeper way that cannot just be explained with words. Additionally, he explains how everything has rhythm, not just art. But also the way we walk, talk, breathe, think, blink, move, etc. Engaging with these rhythms helps him relate to the world around him. Scott Mallory works with virtual reality, visual effects and 3D animation, video and sound art, filmmaking, sound design, and live instrumentation to create artwork that explores quantum physics and perception, and experimental music with jazz, electronic and rock. He participates in research for Leaning Out of Windows, a project designing models of “hybrid research” between artists and physicists at TRIUMF, Canada’s national particle physics lab, towards understanding the nature of reality. His video work showed at the TED2016 “Dream” Conference, the Biennial Foundation Annual Reception for the Venice Biennale 57 Opening/Press Week, and his sound work accompanies a Mercury Space Capsule sculpture made of wood from Barack Obama’s inauguration platform in Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. He is the Founder and Lead Organizer of TEDxECUAD, a TED Conferences attendee, and media arts faculty at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I've always thought this crossover really ties into album covers, there are some covers that really look how the music sounds and it's indescribable to someone who hasn't heard the music, I've always wondered how it's done and I think that when it is done well it adds so much to the experience of the album. currents by tame Impala, green twins by Nick Hakim, and kids see ghosts self titled are a few great ones that come to mind

Come to Africa and you will see more connections.. Actually the traditional cultures are very connected with nature, music, and art in all aspects of life.. And the research of ethnomusicology study these patterns.. In Africa they say there is no movement without rhythm..

Now that is actually art because there is meaning to be derived.

Very very nice! Thank you. It's quite important: rithm is all around us, every little thing has his particular rithm, the rithm of how I perceive everything, when you see something be aware of what you hear, etc. etc. I am artist too, and I can say, the rithm is in the core of everything. 💗

Interesting argument! Anyone else see how the paint suddenly switches back and changes in few seconds @5:12 and switches "forward" in time here @11:40 ? Very strange behavior for a painting :-) Maybe time really is relative!

You have 5 minutes to write a ted talk, with a canvas, and primary colors. You are also required to say boom every time you touch the canvas.

This is like zodiac symbols, lies and stupidity made a science, in this case "art", NOPE, next!

Everything is technically a science. Astrology is a science, but a social science of how the natural world inspires human society and religion. If you’re not an artist why are you watching art videos lol

@@papadaviici7567 Modern art isn't art. It's a money laundering and tax evasion scheme. One the best artists in the said it best. "If it looks wrong, it is wrong." This looks very wrong.
