That looks easy enough! We are buying a 4 acre farm and need to plant a 2 acre pasture for our new jersey calves to graze.

It’s the best way I’ve found to plant without a seed drill. I have another video called (Cows on new pasture) I move the cows to this field and you can see how good the grass grew. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it.

What was the reason for not spreading fertilizer to help the seed to germinate?
@essickfarms7585
@essickfarms7585 8 месяцев назад
Fertilizer would have worked, but I feel like if I use it one time I’ll have to keep using to keep the grass growing and I’d rather find ways to build up the soil to grow grass on its own. I will be putting lime out. Thanks for commenting I appreciate it.
@Iceman-Iceman
@Iceman-Iceman 8 месяцев назад
@@essickfarms7585 Due to our heavy, deep clay soil fertilizing is a must, whether it is natural or chemical to get a fresh stand of grass, even with proper amount of rainfall, liming and soil prep Subsoiling or ripping a must unless you have a lot of rocks then core aeration every year due to compaction then fertilizing afterwards Third generation farmer on a 100 acre farm, with cattle up around a rotation of 40, we are able to keep grass green for 9 to 10 months per year depending on weather 11 months On our crops fertilizer natural or chemical at planting, we try natural if available, some of our residential neighbors might have an issue with the smell, however they love fresh vegetables and fruit

Looks like you seeded this in the summer. I have always been told that grass seed can not dry out or it won't germinate. Did you just seed it, and leave it? How did it turn out?

I logged a month ago. Did you forest mulch or bulldoze it clear and flat?
@essickfarms7585
@essickfarms7585 2 года назад
It was bulldozed. I’ve got around 4 acres on the back side of my land to clear mostly brush and small trees I’d like to get it mulched if it doesn’t cost too much. Thanks for watching!

Great instructional video! I just bought wooded land that I’ll be converting to pasture and this video answers several questions I had. An initial discing to get a good seed bed is important to get forage growing so your animals have something to eat. You could spend money to unroll hay and HOPE some hay seed gets trampled in but I prefer your method. It ensures your animals have a living plant to eat. I do agree that Greg Judy has great ideas with rotational grazing and no till but he started out with established pasture. A little tillage to get things going and then no till after that is the way to go. Plus, I bet discing/harrowing was cheaper than a no-till drill.

Good points. I have seen where other people claim that disc harrowing compacts the soil, but it is probably a lot cheaper. Especially for me, since I have a harrow that came with my tractor. And he has a good pasture to prove it.

you can feed you cattle grass seed. and it will sprout in their manure. And they will not graze grass that is growing in their cow pattys for quite a long time. So the seed gets a good start and is fertilized. Disking or tearing up the soil only encourages wind and rain to erode away the organic material.
@gregsmith3623
@gregsmith3623 2 года назад
I put the seed in at the fertilizer plant and just spread it on top with the fertilizer never till or plow that's what caused the dust bowl.

@@essickfarms7585 Those of us who are a generation or two from actual farming/ranching may have rough idea of how things are done, but it's helpful to just be shown real world examples.

You seem to be a nice guy sadly you need to look into regenerative agriculture. Stop putting heavy equipment on you Land. It's ok to put out seed but feed hay on the land bring in your cattle and let them do the work. You will have a beautiful farm.

I actually have been planning a video about rolling out hay on a cow pasture to better the soil. I’ve been watching Greg Judy for a while now and found it very interesting and I do see the benefits in doing that, so I agree with you 100% .however in this video I was trying to explain the best way that I have found to plant grass in a new cow pasture now that I have grass established in this pasture I will start rolling out hay bales. Thank you for watching and thank you for your comment I really appreciate it.

The only cultivation a pasture needs is a subsoiler. that allows plant roots and water to premate the subsoil. ideally Hay needs to be fed back on the same land it was harvested from. Every ton of hay removed and fed elsewhere is a ton of organic matter lost.
