In my country in the Pacific Islands we hve many different ways of cooking it. My fave is after roasting it, cut it in slices and cooked in coconut cream again.
SHE IS SO HILARIOUS, WHEN SHE SPEAKS JAMAICAN VERNACULAR FAST, I DON'T UNDERSTAND ONE THING SHE SAYS. BUT, IT SO FUNNY. WHEN SHE SLOWS HER SPEECH I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING SAYS. I LOVE THAT SHE DID NOT COMPROMISE HER JAMAICAN ROOTS IN DESCRIBING HOW TO ROAST THE BREADFUIT. I LOVE ALSO THE CANDOUR IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. DEBS MADE ME FEEL LIKE I'M HER BEST FRIEND. I CAN SIT AND CHAT WITH HER ALL DAY.
I'm not Jamaican born, but i pretty much understood every word. She took the words out of my mouth because I was going to ask the question, how am I going to roast this breadfruit when I don't have time to or have the resources and the area to get the sticks to build the fire to roast.. But it's not too cold where i am as she said, i just don't have the outdoor permission to do so in the community won't allow it. I have no way to do it in the house in that way either, no gas burner, i have electric.. But, that's pretty much what she said in the beginning of the video..i do have charcoal grill, i believe it may work to do so on the grill? I will try it that way with grill wood chips or charcoal.
this woman makes me smile. I think I can have a red stripe beer with her. Breadfruit is one of my favorite food. I always wonder why people don't roast them when they are almost ripe. It taste very very good. It is one of nature's greatest food. Nature made us bread without a baking wheat. cooking is one thing but sometimes you have to educate us sometimes. nice video auntie
I was told that bread fruit is good for people that have cancer. I am so grateful for finding you, 🙏🏽 you taught me how to make it,. 🤗 Now I have to find where to buy it 🤔. Thank you 🦋💯💗🫂
Thank you Ma'am for such a detailed and helpful video. It brings me back to my childhood. My Mum used to wrap the breadfruit in foil and roast it in the oven at 350 °F for over 2 hours til the heart roast, in the winter time and rainy times in NYC . In the summer my Dad would roast it in his drum grill in our back yard. I always wanted to know how to do it on the stove top or at least try to, but Mum didn't want the fire alarm to go off again (they tried 1 time, what a heap a noise, LOL). Now I can give this experience to my 4 children and a little taste of my childhood. My Mum would have loved it, unfortunately she passed away in February of 2019 from cancer. Ma'am it's true the breadfruit bitta bitta bitta, man it bitta. That was why my Mum and Dad didn't like to buy roast breadfruit that the restaurants cooked because they never pare of the bitta bad parts. Thus my family started roasting them instead, if not we had to wait for family to come up from JA to get some or find and roast the breadfruit ourselves. Good times. Jah bless you and thank you for all you do, Ma'am.
I was worried this video was too long, but I wanted to learn, and now Im a subscriber. You taught with love and care and that put a smile on my face. Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this video. After years of eating breadfruit as a child, I decided to buy a breadfruit and it was bitter and I knew it was no good. I haven't bought one since due to not knowing what to look for when selecting. This video has helped a great deal and feel confident again to go and one. Thank you so much.

When you opened up your dutchie and I saw REAL ACKEE I almost perish. Oh MY to this day I still stay searching for an ackee tree in this Florida! Once you live in Ja. no can eat the tin ackee. If you EVER know of anyone who will sell ACKEE tree in Florida that has one I beg you please tell me. I so much enjoy your cooking show. Most gratefully Antoinette
@@thejamaicancookingjourney I'm guessing you taught high school cookery or at HEART. Such depth to the info Thanks. Been dying to know why my grandma tapped on the breadfruit...
Red Peas [Jamaicans don't say Red Beans] have nothing to do with ROASTED Breadfruit. Maybe you are thing BOILED. If so that requires different instructions for PEELING, removing the core. Shape is not relevant.
During this pandemic and coming food shortage I have ordered sooo many edible trees. The breadfruit is my latest purchase. I have never tasted breadfruit so I went to my asian market and bought one. I'm excited to try it!
Family thank you for the knowledge that you send out to the universe. It's so helpful. I bought a breadfruit today but the other one you said not to roast.
I never like to handle peeling breadfruit but nw i c what u do i know how to get it done thank u for posting u r a blessing nuff love manners n respect😍😍😍😍

Yes she can cook all of the videos i watch with her that is exactly how i cook because that's how my mother cook. I do the breadfruit the same way but i turn it up first because my mother say it cook faster, when i do that i can see the water in the breadfruit bubbling with the steam.
Thank you. Ive had a few bitter bitter breadfruits but I thought I roasted a wrong one (a boiler). Little did I know it was 'battered' lol. I know now. Now I just gotta find out how to tell a battered one before I buy it.
Hi Debbie how are you sweetheart? I really really enjoy and appreciate your life cooking show I see that you roast a breadfruit on the stove. I'm trying to figure out if I can do the same on my stove except for I don't have a gas stove I have an electric stove which doesn't have a flame. It has a center piece that gets hot more like a hot plate.
ok am good was really thinking about that u know but am gonna throw out that question on the channels i think we would get some more information on that thanks
Deb I am one of your subscriber and I want to know how to choose a yellow heart breadfruit at the store. I live abroad and I have to pick the breadfruit with my nails to see if it is yellow. This way is not good because all the breadfruit in the store will spoil easily. How do I select a yellow 💛 heart breadfruit without peeling off the skin with my nails.
thank you Debbie. I don't know how a breadfruit taste but if I get a chance I'll know how to roast it. I'll look for it in stores so I can try it. again thank you. bblessed bsafe may t force be with you and yours, live long and prosper 😄
Good afternoon Miss Debbie, what happen if you have electric stove, is there another way?..it isn't cold where i am yet, but as you've said..i cannot make a fire with stick, is there an alternative? Thank you so much, God bless.❤
I live in Canada and have no choice but to roast mine in the oven. I cut out the stem, cross the bottom and put it in. It does the job but you won't get that smokey flavour as when it is roasted on the stove top or on an open fire.
