Thanks Jill. I’ll keep this in mind when I get to colder water. I like the KISS principal here. The fewest failure points. 👍🏻

Neat! Thanks for posting. Came on this when youtube served it up and clicked on it 'cos I'd heard of you. This is better advice than most. The bit about retaining your wrist seals is especially important, I reckon. Hoping to be helpful, here's what I do: I dive in the UK and gloveless where at all possible as I need my fingers for species ID and it makes running cameras easier. Unfortunately arthritic changes to my finger joints mean that I now need gloves in winter, so I use Kubis with nitrile marigold-style gloves and silk liners. The liners are left over from year-round commuting on a motorcycle where they were under-gloves and the nitriles (not black) are marketed for herbicide use. Silk is warm when wet and nitrile is flexible yet tougher than rubber. The combination has minimal bulk and allows pretty good dexterity, especially when you practice. Practice is important and it's often forgotten. I wear gloves at work (chainsaw operator and small plant mechanicking as well as marine ecology) so I'm used to them, but it took a while. Wear your dry gloves around the house (washing up anyone?). You'll feel like a proper nana at first, but it will pay off when on the boat. I tend to stay in the dry gloves all day when on a boat in winter, especially if it's a RIB, so my hands stay warm. I have a set of bigger gloves and Fourth Element liners for when it gets proper cold, but rarely have to use them as the thin gloves and a heated vest seem to be fine.

Hey Jill. I know this is little Of Topic. A few years ago I was looking for a pair of gloves for winter. Shoveling the snow. Bought a pair of Henderson 3mm Dive Gloves with Wrist straps. They actually work very well. Even cut down on the vibration from the Snow Blower. And my hands stay pretty dry. Just get a little sweaty. When I worked at Joint Base MDL, Soldiers used to buy that type for use on the range in Winter. Where I got the idea from.

Hi Jill I love these short video tips! I just wondered do you personally use this method then? How come you didn’t opt for one of the established ring based system like the Santi or the Kubi? Thx

I love simple solutions and this looks briliant. I use waterproof umtima on for my Ursuit but if I buy a Santi suit this will be worth trying;)

Jill, enjoy your videos and info on the P2. Thank you! Is there an STL file available to 3d print that ring?
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth 3 года назад
Hi Tyler. I don't have 3D printing capability. My friend made them for me. The ring should be slightly oversized from your wrist ring. If you don't have a 3D printer-friend, I can recommend getting a piece of PVC and cutting it. I found just the right size at Home Depot!

@@JillHeinerth Thanks Jill. I have a 3D printer, so I will measure the outer cuff dimension and make a cylinder with an ID just larger than it as the OD.

Hi Jill nice video!! I have a question for you, the rubber in your santi suit arm, is not standard right? Did you paste it to your suit upon your hard ring?
@JillHeinerth

That was how my suit was originally constructed... nothing special.

For your Fourth Element inner gloves, have the 3mm been adequate for you during your polar trips? Or do you use the bulkier 5mm version? I'm a Great Lakes diver who suffers from cold hands and feet and am hoping these will be the solution to keep my hands comfortable.
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth 3 года назад
For the Arctic, you might want to go with a thicker inner glove. Unfortunately we lose dexterity, but I am with you on cold fingers!

Hey Jill, excellent video. Question- when ordering the gloves, should I get one or even 2 sizes larger than usual (I take a large) as they are coming from Asia. Also, I might be wearing a thin pair underneath to keep warm. What is your opinion? Should I order large, XL, or XXL? Thanks.
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth Год назад
Yeah, that is a challenge. I have found little consistency in glove sizing when they refer to S,M,L,XL, etc. There are other sizes called 9, 10, 11, etc. that are easier to rely on. A 9 fits me with light under gloves and a 10 is great for winter-weight insulation. So I go a little larger for cold, but you don't want to go too large or they will be tough to manipulate and the finger tips will be long.

Hi Jill, nice video. I'm looking for a small and easy to handle dry glove system but I don't have this ring on my Ursuit dry suit. Any ideas? Ralf
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth 3 года назад
Hi Ralf, If you don't have any rings built into the suit wrists, that will be the first step. The receiver side is built into the suit and can be retrofitted to a suit you already have. You'll need to decide which brand/type you want to use and get the appropriate parts installed. A repair shop can generally manage this for you.

@@JillHeinerth Hi Jill, thanks for your answer, I'll see what I can find. I use wet gloves but I think for Iceland it's not enough. So keep warm and save. Regards Ralf

Hi Jill! In how cold waters do the 4th element glove liners 🧤 keep your hands warm? they look very handy.😉 I dont really have the economy for electric heating. I normally can do 100mins in 6C water and maybe 40mins in 0C saltwater....with wool fingergloves under.. But then Im like an ice cube after that. what are they like compared to wool gloves?
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth 3 года назад
I actually find them warmer than wool and they stay warm if you have a bit of a leak or get damp when dressing, which can sometimes happen. I have two sizes and prefer the snuggest one... medium.

Jill, how wide is the ring? A friend is 3D printing me a set of rings. We tried 2 inches and it seems a bit too wide. Thanks!
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth 3 года назад
Two inches should be fine. Loading the glove should be a bit of work, then it will roll on perfectly.

Would this technique work for oval rings? Or would the shape put unequal forces on the glove and cause the seal to not be watertight?
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth 10 месяцев назад
I have used it on oval rings. Whether oval or round, it is just a matter of having enough smooth contact area to seal. Good luck!

Are these gloves huge on you? I had a pair similar and they had a lot of space beyond my fingers and were very hard to use.
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth 2 года назад
You can get various sizes. For me, a size 10 gives a ton of room for thicker cold water undergloves, and a size 8 would be form fitting

It looks like the Santi Smart Rings system. They also have a Smart Gloves system which allows you to click the gloves into place, unlike the method Jill shows here. Jill's method is cheaper of course, though it does require 3d printing a tool.

Hi Jill, By chance do you know or can you ask if Glenn may have shared his 3D printing file on Thingiverse for these loading ring? Understood they are customer sized for the Santi drysuit cuff. Fortunately all the Santi cuffs are the same size to accommodate the Santi Smart Glove system. However I’m with you in saving some money as most times I just dive thick wet gloves. If Glenn has not shared his 3D file maybe you can provide some simple measurements so I can create my own. I would like to know what the inside diameter and the width of your custom loading rings? Thank so much in advance! Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth Год назад
I think you may have to measure since the rings could be a different size. My first attempt was using PVC pipe. I just took my suit to the hardware store and found the right size that would slip over the cuffs. It worked great, but the printed versions were definitely thinner and lighter for travel.
@SeattleRingHunter
@SeattleRingHunter Год назад
@@JillHeinerth thanks for the reply Jill. I did find some PVC coupler parts that were just the right size. I think they will work well for me as I don’t take my dry suit on my travels.
