Just build up good rapport with customers its not easy but rewards are there if you work hard, keep polite and believe in your product with some product knowledge.
If you set, DON'T overspeak at doors! I NEVER promise anything that is 1. Dishonest, 2. Too complex. It is enough to talk about: net metering program, how much power they use on average (monthly), BS a small bit, TELL THEM WHO YOU ARE and don't LIE! They will turn you down if they turn you down, but don't let it be because you were a chump that couldn't understand how it works! PITCH should be a couple minutes. Who are you? What are you doing? Why are you doing that? Simple as fuck! No need to lie. NEM 3 sucks! It is a big reason why a lot of us went to sell elsewhere. I am in the NW now, and it works!

The #1 Tip for d2d sales people. DO'N'T IGNORE NO SOLICITING SIGNS. People display them because they don't want to be bothered by you period. So don't knock on their doors and move on. That is unless you want to be an inconsiderate jerk and have the cops on your a** writing you a hefty ticket. Personally, I love it when a bottom-feeder thinks he can break the law and pounds on my door. I demand his license (or else he's breaking 2 laws), call the cops and give him a big smile as the cop hands him a ticket. And it's even more gratifying after calling City Hall and getting his permit revoked because he was a disrespectful jacka** in the first place.
This just isn’t real, I have been in D2D for 6 years and more often than not, no soliciting doors are exactly the same. If you present yourself as a professional and not be confrontational. No soliciting means absolutely nothing by law, it’s an infringement on the 1st amendment. Some local jurisdictions require permits (not licenses) but you seem to not be a pleasant person which is why you get those responses.
