Zoe you're such a wealth of knowledge on this industry. I'm not a designer or interested in the fashion industry and only found your videos because I'm learning to sew, but I have greatly enjoyed them. My favourite is the one you did about all different fabric types. Please keep your videos coming.

another great video, zoe. from just 3 videos, i feel that much more confident in my surf apparel startup. it got me thinking ... initially, until i get comfortable with production calendars, open to buy, and typical volume, i plan to get a local printing company to print shirts for me using my designs. i guess in this sense i am "private labeling" my stuff through the design company and selling wholesale to local retail surf shops. never thought of it that way.

For clothing, Target private labels are Merona, Mossimo, and Cat and Jack. I think it's interesting that some of these were not private label until Target just bought them?

Hi Zoe, I am wondering, if you have a specific design and a customer wants to make slight alterations, going ahead with the design and alterations, do you continue to sell the same style you had shown them, to other customers? or do you reserve the style just for them? I hope i explained that correctly. Thank you for your amazing advice, it definitely has taught me alot about the fashion industry.

Example: you have an all wool coat, a store orders that coat but with a leather collar, can you sell the version with the leather collar to other stores? Yes, unless the store pays for exclusivity. It can happen, you should ask them to order a certain quantity to give them exclusivity. Even then, you can say, I will give you exclusive rights to the wool coat with *this specific color and quality leather* to you but sell it with different leathers to other people.

I have been looking and could not find on your channel a video on specific fashion industries and if making the clothes is essential in designing. I know you did say that what you don't know you will have to pay someone else to do but I really need something deeper. I haven't started college but next year I will be applying to colleges and i would like to have my mind made up on the industry I need to go into. Please help me.

When approaching a retailer with your designs, what are the things to have prepared to design private label for that company?
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 5 лет назад
The same things as someone trying to get a regular wholesale order: linesheets with pricing, swatches in all available colors, photos posted on the website.

Hey Zoe, quick question do you think that for a designer that specializes in a subcategory that is often licensed out, private label is the way to go? Basically do you see the industry growing more in private label product verse branded product?

It might sound shady, but it's kinda smart. It's alot less work for a pretty good pay off.
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 7 лет назад
It's not a lot less work. It's about the same. You've already put in the product development time to have the sample to show the customer, which you were doing with your stuff anyway. You're going to do the production when it's sold, just like the rest of it.

My internship was interning with a client and wanted us to make a childrens' line. Somehow the project got put on hold (its been 3 months now) and now I have a boy and girl collection with 40 pieces between them. I have the sketches made, color story, and suggested textiles that I wanted. Should I try and sell it or do I need to wait to see what the client wants to do?
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 5 лет назад
You need to have some conversations with the parties involved, especially the people who put up the money. Generally the goods belong to whoever paid for everything. If multiple people paid for getting everything made, you need to get everyone's OK on paper before you try to do anything with it.

So just to clear up, I, for example, can have my own brand and also be a private label? Sorry I heard you touch on it a little bit, but I just wanted a really clear answer :) Or, can I be a private label to begin with and then become a brand when I'm ready? Okay that was the last question xD
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 7 лет назад
Yes, you can do both, many companies do both, and yes you can start one and add the other element later when you're ready.

All my private label experience comes from working as a designer for companies that had their production processes in place already. I designed changes, revised flats and tech packs, sent them off to production, and then checked out the finished products before they shipped out.
@jayjayita7649
@jayjayita7649 7 лет назад
Hi, Zoe! Do you give companies only the sketch and they extrapolate the pieces to place on fabric, or do you draw them too? I ask because I study tailoring and I design directly the paper pieces to place... By the way I started being interested in fashion drawing thanks to you! Where can I show you my "masterpieces"? XD Sorry for bad english, i'm still trying to learn technical words...
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 6 лет назад
Do you mean do I make the patterns? I have done it, but mostly I hire pattern makers.
@jayjayita7649
@jayjayita7649 6 лет назад
Zoe Hong I'll try to be more clear, despite my poor technical lexicon. As a tailor, my work consists in developing a garment based on customer's preferences, I usually already have fashion figures books to take inspiration from (that's why I want to draw my very own ideas instead). Then I note measurements and I draw everything 1:1 on paper, i cut every piece and put them on the fabric; the rest is history... I was talking about the 1:1 paper pieces, that fashion factories use, too. I hope I explained better. In the Instagram photo I linked, at the bottom right you can see an example instagram.com/p/BK0yOESgaSH/
@zoehongteaches
@zoehongteaches 6 лет назад
Those paper piece you have pinned on the fabric? They're called patterns. In the industry, paper patterns are usually made of thicker papers/boards, but essentially that's what they are.
