This reminds me of the early days of Wheeler Dealers, when Edd actually got the chance to properly show how to perform basic repairs on a car. And this time we don't even have some cheesy royalty-free stock music in the background.

Nice to see you back Edd. I have to do my brakes soon so I was pleased to see this video. I find myself in a situation where I have to do my own repair work when I am able. More videos like this or an entire show about auto maintenance/repair would be so welcome by me and I'm sure many, many others. Edd China is the show, any show, he should be primetime everywhere. He has influenced me tremendously, and I would love to have him for a day! Have so many questions about the ls400 I bought, after seeing him work one... But having done brakes a hundred times, I've learned something every time I watch him do them! So happy that he still has a forum, but it will never be high enough for me! Love you Edd, haven't watched wheelers since you left.

This is a brilliant video, exactly what most people watched Wheeler Dealers for, the mechanical expertise. However, this is better than any Wheeler Dealer episode because of the clear documentary style, this sort of thing is needed as a television series, we all know that most people love cars, and that most men like to understand the mechanicals of cars. A series like this could be the biggest thing on television.

Edd is extremely competent and thorough, anyone who has worked for a main stealer will tell you they don't go anywhere near the amount of time, care or expertise exhibited by Edd. Virtually all nuts and bolts get buzzed, nothing gets greased. Techies are instructed to work in this manner by the service manager, who in turn is told by the area manager to do it this way. The franchises make the mechanics have their torque wrenches calibrated so that they have a nice little certificate as a way of a disclaimer in case a buzzed bolt shears and the worst happens. It's all time, and in the world of main dealer garages, time is money. The dealer I worked for charged £85 + vat for labour, and paid the mechanics (who had to buy their own tools at a cost of tens of thousands of pounds) £8.50 per hour. Where possible, do not use main dealers, use a reputable independent garage. You get better service and pay half the labour price.
@carlosedwardos
@carlosedwardos 6 лет назад
I worked as a master technician for several main dealers, and they knew I was good by reputation, and I always negotiated a pay rate of 1/3 the shop labor rate per FLAG HOUR, so in your example that pay rate would be £28.33/hour - and because it is per flag hour, I could easily make £50/hour by beating the book specified time for each job.
@gazjonze
@gazjonze 6 лет назад
burrito rustler I would like to know which dealer that was, and also when it was, as most main sealers would tell you where to go if you tried to get more money out of them, as there's no shortage of technicians... I'm going to hazard a guess and say you were a Vauxhall techie?
@carlosedwardos
@carlosedwardos 6 лет назад
this was in the states, and it is ANY dealership I work for - I am good at what I do, and if your dealership wants me, the price is 1/3 of shop labor rate per flag hour, and it's NOT negotiable.

When it comes to brakes an other low skill jobs they have to do a quick and dirty job because they have to remain competitive with the small shops using inferior parts, tools, and training. Everyone wants to be a cheap ass these days and wants to get what they assume is the best deal for the money, when in reality they don't care what kind of job gets done to their car, so long as their wallet isn't much lighter than it was going in.

When I lived near Ipswich I used to go to a little shop in a town I think it was Felixstowe? the older gentleman was a Brilliant Mechanic and he never over charged me even if I was a young yank at the time, he always did my MOT and told me upfront if I needed to fix something before it went bad. I can do a lot of the mechanical things myself but I did not have access to a working space I had a one room flat even my Mini would not fit in there.
