Can you believe it? 10,000 subscribers! THANK YOU!! To celebrate, we do a 10,000 mile service on a Ford Model A.
We will pack the wheel bearings, lube the throw-out bearing, check the fluid in the shocks, lube the steering column and all the other goodies needing service every 10,000 miles. My lovely spouse unit Tina makes a cameo appearance.

I’ve been working on model A’s with my grandfather since I was probably 6 or 7. We have done everything from pulling an engine and rebuilding it to doing a part of a restoration on a car unit I had to go back to school. My grandfather and I actually swapped his engine that started knocking that morning in a afternoon. He’s taught me how to make all these custom tools for doing specific jobs. He is the guy in there club if they need a part they come to him. They need a warm place to come work in the winter they come to his shop. They need a place to park there cars in the winter when they don’t drive it he lets them park in his parts barn at the bottom. He’s been working on theses cars since he was in his 20s back in the 60s. He still has his first model A. He’s let other ones go but he says he will never sell that first one.

Paul, an other good video. Good tip on lubing the steering column and control rods. That never occurred to me and I have never seen it mentioned before. I put that on my "to do" list for today. I am going to mention that at our next club meeting, whenever that may be. We haven't met in the clubhouse since March!! I like that you remind us of safety in the shop and to wear eye protection.You may want to remind your wife to wear eye protection while under the car. I have gotten plenty of 'junk' in my eyes (and in my mouth too!!) over the years while under the car , even with wearing my prescription eye glasses. Keep up the good work!

@@ModelA more model T than A. Dad was raised in a rural area. He would buy Ts for $25.00 in seen . Then take his fathers team of mules a nd hook them to the front bumper, lower the wind shield and throw the reins over it and steer the Ford and drive the mules at the same time. The lead mule was controlled by a check line. A country doctor got a Ford . One night went to deliver a baby.it took a long time and by the time doc got home he was half asleep. When he got in front of his house he stepped out of the Ford and said whoa Nellie and went in the house. The next morning he sent for my dad. To fet the Ford out of the pond behind the barn. The Ford went into the barn and through the back wall and into the pond. Dad dried out the Ford and got it running again. Dad said you cranked a lot of As in cold weather the oil got stiff and the battery didn’t always do the job and you had to crank it. He said you put the Ford in high gear ,jack up a rear wheel wedge an axe handle in the spokes and crank it that way in cold weather.early As didn’t have roll up windows. Had a leather strap.connected to the bottom of the window. It had holes in it that hooked on something to hold it in the position you wanted. Lots of times I would be using a tool and he would say that it was used to do a certain job on a A model . He had a complete set of wrenches for a T model. I ground the largest ocean. Eith of an inch wider to fit a nut on my Cushman scooter. He was not happy. Dad said a t model never hit anything just once. They would bounce off and hit it again. Some times would hit something three times b4 they quit running

The seating of the wheel bearings on the other hand, I do a little different, but I think I like your way and I'm going to give that a try on my next service on my vehicles. Tip. When removing an old battery, put the terminal caps from the new one on it while you are working in the area. It prevents accidentally making contact. If no caps, a couple wraps of electrical tape or a strip of cloth backed tape does it too. Generally no needed when one is careful, but that is why they are called accidents, heh.

I love seeing these old cars still being used. Cars are meant to be driven, not to sit in barns. I’m seventeen and have been working really hard and plan to buy a classic car this summer. I know everyone here will say to buy a model A, but I am not handy enough to daily drive a model A. I plan on buying an almost mint 1959 Edsel Ranger (the one currently listed by Gateway, as long as it’s still for sale) to use as my daily driver in the summer. Any thoughts about those cars? Thanks. Keep up the great content!
@ModelA
@ModelA 3 года назад
Good plan, Ryan! FYI, if you're talking about the Edsel I think you're talking about, you would be WAY better off keeping a Model A on the road as a daily than that. If you really just want an elderly automobile to daily around, get something like a 60's Mustang or Camaro. There are TONS of parts available and a tremendous support online for them. If you're wanting something older, it would be tough to beat a Ford with a flathead V8. But, the last thing you need is someone else telling you what you *should* do. Just go do it, and be the coolest guy on the road! If I can be of help, just say the word.

Another great video. Wondering ? how big is the garage you have the cars in. Looks like you have a shipping container for one of the cars. My dream is to have a building and lift to work on my A's. Currently only have a house garage to work in. Also it looks like you keep the garage really clean. THANKS

Thanks! The shop is a metal building about 30 x 40. The small garage is a "Tuff Shed". The rest are in storage. I did my first restoration in a 8 x 16 shed.

Auto shop teacher huh. I honestly wish that was still offered in high schools. I graduated in 2018 (Born in 2000), and that wasn't even an option. A few lucky students got to leave school for 2 periods and do something similar to auto shop, but I was not able to get such an option. Good content though man.

What a shame. My shop teacher was a HUGE influence in shaping the man I became. Shop teachers can teach you things about being a good man that nobody else can.

All the best and may it continue for 2021 :D Edit: WHOA that made a difference! Now I have to pay attention the idle lever doesn't creep down on me while driving xD
@ModelA
@ModelA 3 года назад
Nice! Now, you have to make sure the notches are in good shape. If not, use a triangle file to fix them. Then bend the notches flange so it is flat against the back of the lever.

The Model T is certainly a different animal. To each their own. I have some Model T experience also. I just prefer the Model A, especially for modern traffic. Assuming both cars are unmodified, of course. Put 4-wheel disc brakes on a Model T and you're no longer talking about the same machine.

Do you have a video that shows the return tube to the oil pan. I have a large leak after I drive my 30. I am changing transmission now and want to find the leak. I can't get the oil pan off the bolts up front hit the cross member.
@ModelA
@ModelA 3 года назад
Hi Wayne. I'm sorry, nothing specifically on that yet. Sometimes, the solder joints at the ends of the oil return tubes give out or crack and cause a leak. Also, I use the cork gaskets on the ends because they are the most leak resistant. The front pan bolts are a pain but not impossible unless your motor mounts are goofy. Try jacking up the motor a bit. Please keep is informed on your progress as you tackle this!
