good afternoon could you help me with this engine that what it says in the description is good or bad Very very nice motor. Selling for my dad's buddy. Used literally once a year on a Canada trip. New electric ignition last year and lower rebuilt. Don't know anything about that I'm just listing. Runs perfectly very very nice.
I dont think it makes too much difference if its only used once a year. I think the best thing to do would be to see it running in a bin or water or whatever and just make sure it runs well and pumps water properly.
Hey mate, I have the same motor and I'm due for a service. First service since I've owned and i want to do it myself. Did you have to buy each part separately or does mercury do a full service kit? How much roughly for the kit? I'm in QLD at the Gold Coast

Thanks for the vid, very helpfull. If youre taking the gearbox off anyway to do the impeller, would it be easier to fill it holding it upside down before you replace it
@@berko79 almost would have tried myself. Went to do the service but when i found the impeller etc all good didnt bother. I have a big trip later in the year so ill do a full service then. Interested to see how you go
I have a 1987 Mercury 20hp electric start but I am not sure if the motor itself need oil or oil change (I add oil to the gas tank but I am not sure if this is needed). Do you add oil to yours? Thanks
Yeah mine is a 2 stroke so i have to add oil to the fuel at 50:1 ratio. If yours is 2 stroke (i'd guess it probably is) then you are correctly adding oil to your gas.
I know this is a few years old but just to point out you've put the impellor on incorrectly. Vanes/blades should be folded back in the opposite direction. Your pump will not operate properly and you will most likely break off the rubber vanes in a short time which could then block the water passage as well.
I don't have my engine here to check but my understanding is there is a square box with a 2 digit number on the identification sticker which is the year it was made.
I had to re-watch it, id forgotten i cut it out. - yeah you can see me struggle for a bit and then cut and its just off (haha).... It actually wasn't that easy and took a few minutes to get off. It was a combination of lightly tapping the lower leg (near the part where it joins) and once there was a small gap i was able to gently pry it with the flat head screwdriver. Good luck - mine was pretty stuck but a bit of persuasion and it let go eventually.
I believe you can, but because the oil is thick and you get air bubbles it can take a long time. I really did make a meal of it in this video, usually its a bit easier :)
A tad few years late to the comment. Hard to explain but they should be filled from the bottom as he said air bubble but it's the way it fills up also and getting into the groves. Apparently from the top you won't know if it's full properly because would have to wait but from the bottom you will know that it's be done correctly
for the heads up in the thumb nail you used a picture of the us model but your actual motor is a japanese model and there extremely different so you might want to change that or note that in the thumb nail or title.
Just clarifying that this is a 2 stroke. In a two-stroke engine, the crankcase is serving as a pressurization chamber to force air/fuel into the cylinder, so it can't hold a thick oil. Instead, you mix oil in with the gas/fuel to lubricate the crankshaft, connecting rod and cylinder walls.
