This is how to clean and lubricate your standard Garrard mechanism found on many models built during the mid 1960s.

Everywhere that was lubed with that grease will be frozen with the powdery residue of what remains of the grease, and must be cleaned and then re-lubed with a good grease. I used to use "Phonolube", which came in a metal tube, from Chemtronics(?), but I'm sure there are better greases available these days, such as that lithium grease you're using. Those Garrards were made totally of metal parts, and a complete cleaning and re-lube will get them like new. The motor and the idler wheel are the only issues that need to be dealt with. Great video.

Having watched your video you have given me more confidence to service 2 Gerrard A Type turntables that I have, I won't take everything apart but will take my time and clean where ever possible so not to lose any of those small clips, and I have a service manual to follow as well. I know my turntables are not the same as the one you worked on but the basics are there. Thank you for the video I have picked up on a few things.

Excellent video. Thanks for making and uploading this. 👍 I have found that all the used record changers i have purchased need serious cleaning and lubrication and then they work fine. Adjusting the tonearm force and installing the best cartridge/stylus is another important step. Even the simplest Garrard or BSR can be made to work like new unless some parts are broken or bent. When the grease dried up users tried to force the controls and did serious damage.

I remember these well, in the sixties and early seventies I worked in a audio repair shop. I probably worked on hundreds of these . I liked these better than bsr's or VM's. The heat gun is a good tip, I had to use WD40 (the absolutely the only thing it is good for) and let it sit for a while for the old grease to loosen, then clean it off with cleaner and degrease. While it isn't that way now I remember trying a new fangled silicon grease and oil, that was supposed to never dry out, that our visiting parts dealer swore by. With in a month I had about twenty tape recorders and turntables come back all frozen up. I threw that stuff out and didn't have a problem a again.
@dougbrowning82
@dougbrowning82 3 года назад
@Seventh Anubis VM licensed their stuff around the world. As I recall, in Canada they were made by Seabreeze,, Telefunken made them in Europe, and Wincofon had a license in Argentina. Garrard licensed their machines to BIC in America in the 1970s, as their British products were banned due to plastic parts liquefying in fire.

It really is incredible how well these things are built considering they were budget turntables. All metal, a decent sized AC motor, proper fasteners and bearings. This simply could not be made today. Even if something similar was made today, it wouldn't be all metal, it would be all plastic. And if you really want to be amazed, look at 1930s electric changers. They are built like they are industrial machinery. They probably weigh a good 50 plus pounds.

I lost my temper with a Garrard turntable back in the 70's/80's. Can't remember exactly when. I had reached my temper threshold for AC motor, _mechanically_ induced 50Hz hum (I'm in the UK, hence 50Hz) I was playing a record, became increasingly annoyed at 50Hz - mechanically coupled in every _warped_ bounce of the LP I was playing. Ripped my Sure Cartridge from the arm and threw the damn thing down the stairs.... I think I gracefully unplugged it first :-/ I wanted my next Turntable from then, to be DC.

good day, I am restoring an HMV radiograme which has a Garrard 3000 turntable. i notice on the model in this video RCA sockets are provided to connect the deck to an amp. on the 3000 i have there is a strip of spade terminals to solder the L,R and Ground wires for this purpose. You have to gain access to the underside of the model 20. You should see a rectangular clip at the end of each screw coming down from the top side of the turntable. Push down on the turntable from the top while flipping the clip so that it hugs the side of the screw, rather than being perpendicular to it. Disconnect the audio and power connectors. Grab by connector only. May take some effort, but they'll come loose and you can lift out the turntable for service.

Seems like the step that guides the tonearm to the proper set down position is worn. You can try adjusting it so it sets down about half way in the lead in groove and carefully bending the tab on the bottom trip piece on the cycling cam towards the slide connected to the tonearm which activates the ENT of play trip. Be careful to Bend it precisely at the bend or the whole trip may bind from distortion or the metal when bending

Dear Sir, I am having this model garratd 3000. The knly problem is yhat ot dies not revolves at 78 rpm speed but other speeds are okay. I diagnosed the problem.The idler wheel drags on one of the motor fitting screws ,in fact if is a E clip of bigger size.When it is raised for other speeds it is perfectly alright.Dor this I have removed the e clip of idler wheel and placed two thin metal rings fitting into the main fitting area of idler wheel.This restored the 78 4pm speed, I ca not show rhis in my commrnts.But , tge e clip of idler wheel can not be fixed there. Kindly advise me to restore the correct speed without fixing two metal rings. Whether this due to the main spring becoming week and unable to drag completely the idler wheel towards motor spindle.

@@jackc7511 No sir ,the engine or to say the motor is not weak if other speeds are okay. Just try to clean the spindle at a height where idler wheel touches the spindle for 33 speed .Clean the edges of the rubber wheel, inside the plater where the idler wheel forces the plater to run that shoukd be cleaned .Clean the spindle with alcohol. Open the cover below the shaft of the motor and put some machine oil on the bearing down below the clip which is the gatekeeper of the bearing down and do not remove the clip there as it may get damaged. No oil to be dropped on the other movable or friction area and specially the rubber of the idler wheel .Wipe out oil if any oil is visible on the idler surface or edge .
@jackc7511
@jackc7511 2 года назад
@@umeshupadhyay... Thanks for the hint. Unfortunately, I have done all the steps before. They didn't help. A delicate matting of the motor shaft and rubber is also used. I am thinking of replacing the rubber wheel. It looks like the rubber wheel is not tightened enough against the motor shaft. Although the wheel has been thoroughly washed and regenerated in a special silicone - improving its flexibility. . The wheel, at higher revolutions, has a high clamping force because the diameter on the motor shaft is larger and the wheel does not need to be far from the motor shaft. At 33/12 ", this distance is approx. 7 mm longer and the downforce decreases. That is the reason. But what causes it? The springs are not worn. Only the rubber wheel remains. The interesting thing is that you can hear and feel the motor turning, and the platter jams and there is no force to move the wheel that controls the automaton.
@umeshupadhyay...

No one pronounces it like that, and I'm not even so sure you are correct.

@@jimb032 Trust me, it's a hard G. British company, with connections to Garrard The Jewelers, and every Brit pronounces it correctly, exactly as written, GArrard. Not Gerrard. I don't think I can even think of *any* "GA..." words that ARE pronounced "Je...". Please stop abusing our language 😜
