if you stumble upon one of these or have one that needs help, here's how to get them tip top again.
This video assumes the turntable has not had a motor failure or sustained an impact or fall.

I followed your advice and ordered a new belt from Russell Industries last thursday. On the call with them they said the proper belt is the Fry23, not the Fry25.0. I told the guy that you said the 25.0 is the correct one so that is the one I want. I received the belt today and of course you were 100% correct! If I had ordered from them without viewing your video I probably would have to order again. Thank you for showing the bag with the correct belt!

You should invest in some mold making silicone and make copies of all of these common plastic parts. They will all go bad. It will brittle with age. It get brittle from age alone, so even NOS parts can be just as bad as parts coming in machines to be serviced. If you are in the business of repairing this stuff, the molds and plastic are cheap enough to make molds assuming each mold is not a single repair. If you have all the pieces, even if the pieces are broken, it's no big deal. Just glue them together and then mold the repaired piece. The repair will NEVER hold, but by molding the part, you can pour a brand new all one piece repaired part. You can also make knobs this way. Really, anything. The silicone is a fortune in small quantities, but the large container is much, much cheaper per ounce.

These things have been around for decades, virtually unchanged. I had a Philips one, bought new in the mid 1980s that came with a midi system that, although outwardly it looked nothing like the Sony, was made in the same Hanpin factory in Taiwan and the mechanism was pretty much identical (no preamp of course, and it had a 12v barrel jack rather than a transformer). They had Sanyo cartridges at that time.

However I was going to clean out and re-grease the spindle bearing and instead of a set screw with a slotted head found on other turntables that I have worked on (as you mentioned) I found a pin with no slot and what looks to be a spot weld. I assume this is best left alone if it works fine?

I brought one of these into a trusted servicer recently. They told me it needed a new motor, which they could not get. So they scrapped it. I have the feeling they only looked for a brand new motor, which in the supply chain is unobtanium. They may have wanted to Jack up the profitability of the repair. Thoughts?
@JordanPier

THE replacement motor is hard to find. However, other manufacturers used the same motor or one that will work just as well with minor modifications. The Audio-Technica at-lp 60 motor will work in this machine, and is available if you're willing to wait for backorder. Part 704-F706-7303 Sonys original part number is 1-763-247-11 if you want to Google someone who may have it OEM part MMI-6TRWKO 176324711

@@JordanPier Thank you. Likely too late at this point. They made it sound like they were performing brain surgery, and that the original was the only suitable part. In the meantime, I secured a very similar Aiwa, for $4, which works great except for auto stop. Assuming the internal mechanism is the same as the Sony, I may try to open it up and fix that bar that you showed on the bottom. This repairer, who I once trusted, would likely say the machine needed “major work”.

I just inherited one from my grandmother. I was told the turntable has been working so I'd have to fix/have it fixed if I wanted it to work. Upon taking it apart, it seems all of the circuitry and mechanisms are in tact, but when I plug it in and press start, the motor doesn't turn at all even with some oil added. I also noticed that the two little metal arms attached to the start button area don't hook up to anything, and I don't know where they hook up to. On your video it seems to show them hooked into little holes in one of the tension arms. My tension arm doesn't have two little holes for them to fit in.... Could it have been a bad repair? It is the same model! Would you be able to help me out with this one?
@JordanPier
@JordanPier Год назад
If you lift the arm over manually does the turntable motor spin? If so, examine the linkages to the start/stop buttons. May have been someone was messing with yours. if the motor does not turn, check switch continuity with the turntable unplugged from the wall. observe how the tonearm base linkages interface with the switch and the like.

Having issue with my practically brand new sony LX 310 ( just over a year old)- play button wont push in and click into place and start playing record. Has power , able to connect to devices via bluetooth, Up/ down button works and so does stop - I've removed button cover - no obvious damage other than small silver wire attached to start button is sitting loosely - though is secured in black brackets, possibly jiggled free of its spot - if its meant to connect somewhere on white piece (I ve moved house in last year). If I attempt to click play button wire doesnt have ability to move white lever - which operates turntable - in your video its hard to see where start button wire sits and how its operates. Any videos showing correct position and action start button should cause beneath cover would be appreciated.

Well, in the video when he puts his finger on the big white gear, he is touching two flat plastic pieces that are sandwiched together. He explains that they need to move freely from each other. I believe that is the "flip flop" he is talking about. Old grease will cause too much friction. They need to flip flop freely.

Hopefully you still monitor this video. By the way, it is excellent! Two days ago I brought my PS-LX250h out of the garage and cleaned it up, and bought a new cartridge, exactly the one you say to use. I attached the RCA cables to my amp and it plays ok through it, but there is a lot of what sounds like static. Can you give me a clue as to what causes this? I can attach my PS-LX300USB and it plays with no static sound. Could it be the cabling or possibly something else? I appreciate your assistance.

The speed seems a little off so I'm going to order one of the new belts you spoke of and see if that fixes that particular problem. Hello again. The "mechanics" of my turntable do not seem to be working. The platter spins once it is plugged in. I was able to adjust it to the proper speed and LPs play fine manually moving the tonearm and setting it down and it lifts up at the correct point at the end but does not return. The start and stop buttons do not seem to work. The center white gear disc does not rotate fully. Is it supposed to? Advice?
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 6 месяцев назад
White cycling gear should make a complete rotation. If something is stopping it, there is a mis alignment with the guide pin underneath and the track it rides in. You can unscrew the gear and lift off, position the pin with your fingers to what you believe to be the right spot, then install the gear and rotate it counterclockwise through a complete rotation to check that its not binding. If not, see if the set will move the arm correctly. If so, great! - if not, and its not binding then further investigation and disassembly as to why is needed.

One question. What's the difference between an ATN3600L and LX? Just Sony's name for the same stylus?
@JordanPier
@JordanPier Год назад
Pretty sure its a sony thing. The 3600 is a conical with aluminum cantilever. Max weight is 3g The 3600e is the same but an elliptical stylus. The 3600L is a conical stylus with carbon fiber cantilever with a max weight of 6g. This is why its used everywhere. It can take abuse too. Note that a Sony cannot do anything but the 3600L because of the 3.5g weight that is fixed. The 3600/e will just mash into the record
