Update: I started doing this when my pup was 4 months (with some breaks in between) and eventually his left ear set in the button position but the right ear was still rising. I was about to give up thinking it was too late at 6 months, but decided to give it one last shot on his right ear and it actually set!! Thank you so much THIS WORKS.
I just wanted to thank you! Omg I’ve watched so many videos and yours has been the most efficient and effective one there is! I love how the pups ears aren’t glued shut or glued to their face. I was about to give up. My Aussie doesn’t even know the moleskin is on there and he looks just like when we first brought him home! Thank you again so much!
Thank you for your awesome videos. We followed this for our Aussie, Quincy, at about 4 months and did it for about 2 months. Now at 9 months his ears look wonderful! They are super expressive to match his mood and lay down just as they should when he is at rest! His baby brother Finley comes home next week at 8 weeks and we will definitely do this technique again when he is ready! Thank you so much!!! Your grooming videos are fabulous too and your dogs are gorgeous!!!
Thank you SO much for this video. In a few weeks, our Toller Retrievers ears are button again. So thankful for the person who pointed it out to us since we had no idea! Sadly there’s no skinproof leather glue available in my country so we had to redo it every 2 days, but it’s worth it!
Thanks for great vid 👌🏻 I have a little Brussels Griffon and just did his ears. He seems super happy and they're not bothering him at all. Had glued them down previously which I actually didn't like doing. This seems to be a much better way of doing it.. Here's hoping it works 😁
Thank you so much for this video. My Miniature Schnauzer is 5 months old and his left ear was suddenly in the rose position a few days ago. We just put the moleskin pads on him after watching your video. I'm hopeful this will work. I'll let you know his progress!
Hi! This is the best video I’ve seen on setting ears! My Aussie is 3 months old and has the rose ears. How long do I tape his ears for? And when do I switch out the moleskin? Do I give breaks at all? Thank you so much!!
My dog is past the puppy stage but im going to try this in hopes it works😬 he had perfect ears as a puppy and they changed when he hit about 9-12 months or so!
I just let it fall out itself. Easier on the dog than trying to remove but they normally come out after a bath. You can use alcohol to break down the glue if need be.
Did our first round on my 4 month old Aussie and I’m surprised at how long it lasted! So thankful someone shared this video with me! Question, does anyone else strugggle with their pups ears flipping inside out all day? Especially with this weight added? Is there a way I can help that? Or will it mess something up in the setting of her ears?
I know it says in usually for a few week. My question is how long does it take for the cartilage to be fused in correct position? I will have to reapply a new one as it falls off but how will I know when it is permanently a forward ear? Mine is 12 weeks old when we started. BTW....your video is the easiest on this subject to understand and follow.
There’s unfortunately not one answer as every dog is different! It can take up to 8 months. Once the moleskin falls out, if the ears stay like how you want them you, you’re good to go and don’t need to put it back in.
I love this method it works so well. Quick question my six month old I have been doing since about 13 weeks when I saw his ears starting to rose. His right ear has set really well but after this last round I am still struggling with his left. Is it ok to just do one ear?
Just ordered the stuff to try on my new pup. He’s 5 months tomorrow so hopefully I’m not starting to late. It said teething stage and we are at that fun time right now. My other Aussies ears are button and I love that look. How do you get the glue off the ears? Just a warm rag?
You massaged them to get them to stay pinned forward? How did you do that? My boy is about to be 3 months and one ear is rosing and the other pinned forward.
This is probably a lost cause but I’m gonna ask anyway. My pup’s ears were taped a few times. Sometimes they would both be perfect but often they would switch back and forth on being rightly set after tapes were out. He seemed to be having the right set until about 6 and half months. That’s when I found out about this but wasn’t able to put it in until he was almost 7 months because of shipping. I knew it was cutting it close but I wanted to try. I’ve been doing it since and he’s 8 months next week. Between moleskins, both his ears keep going back and forth on being rose ears and button. He’s fine when he’s calm and inside or in calm weather. But when he gets excited his ears go rose or if it’s windy it’s a hit or miss what they end up like. Does that sound like I should give up?
Most of mine actually go back and forth too when they are acting wild so that is normal. As long as they fold button at attention most of the time, I’d say you are good. If you want to keep going for another month it wouldn’t hurt anything
Thank you so much for sharing your method! I did have a question. My 5 month old is now on 2 quarters in each ear since 1 didn't seem like enough weight. During the night he sleeps upside down and in the morning his ears look rose even with these in. Throughout the day I massage and move forward and they are as they should be by noon or so, but it starts all over again the next day. Is this normal or should I try a hard glue?
I just wanted to follow up for anyone reading this comment, I switched to taping with a chin strap as I needed more stability for my guy's ears since they are on the thinner side and want to rose/flip to the sides. It has helped him a lot in these two weeks, but I think with a puppy's ears that weren't as thin as my guy's this moleskin method would work great!
Great video! Thanks! I know many ways to make Aussie ears beautiful, but this method is new to me. Unfortunately, I do not see Moleskine for sale in my country. Tell me what would you replace it with? I see you use glue anyway.
I’m unfortunately not familiar with what is sold in other countries. I’d suggest googling what is a similar product to moleskin. That’s all I’d be able to do! 🤣 Moleskin is typically found in the feet padding section of stores and is a semi firm fabric if that helps
How long does a moleskin patch usually stick onto the ear? A week or two or more? If it needs to be removed, what's an easy, painless way to do it? Do you shave the hair off the inside of ear flap before applying?
I don’t shave the hair. The glue will stick to the hair better than the leather. Stays in about a week or two and I just let it fall out. Normally they come out after getting wet but can carefully use alcohol too
Thank you for this video! When you say use nickels or pennies for puppies, what age is considered a puppy? Ours is 13 weeks and I’m wondering if we should use a nickel or quarter! Thank you!!
That depends on the ear size. I normally start with nickels or pennies because the quarters will be too big to fit in the moleskin on the ear. I'd start with a nickel and if they aren't hanging against the head, use quarters next time.
Thank you very much for this video!!! I’ve tried this and worked really well! I just have one question, when i glued the moleskin to the hair it started falling out after a few weeks (whenever the moleskin starts falling out after a few weeks it comes with hair glued to it), so do you think that the glue can affect the hair growth? Or will the hair grow again naturally? Thank you in advance!
Wow thanks, been taping my Rottweiler ears but this method is way better, my dog is 8 months old and most of the time her ears are fine but i want her to have normal ears, thanks
I have a video for show prep where I go over how to tweak the topline and neck. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8RvQsnS7PRw.html As for trimming or thinning it out, I have yet to make that one! If you haven't already, you can subscribe to keep tabs on what I post :)
Hi :) My pup is 5 months old and I’ve been using 1 quarter in each ear. I noticed the ears don’t seem as weighted down lately. Do you ever use 2 quarters? Or is 1 always enough? Her ears are quite stubborn and will go rose when the moleskin isn’t in still. Sometimes when the moleskin falls out I find her ears are stronger and will hold the button ear for hours. I guess that has to do with the phase of teething she is in.
When did you start weighing them down? 5 months is getting close to time that the ears are set and won’t be able to be changed. One quarter should be enough for them to fold forward.
@@sandollaraussies I started at 3 months :) I was looking at them closer and I was wrong, the quarter is weighing it down fine! I think I didn’t put the moleskin far enough down to the tip of the ear the last time I put them in so that’s what I was noticing. One fell out earlier today and the ear seems to be sitting correctly still now 6 hours later without anything in it. I’ll set it again tomorrow if it goes Rose again. Fingers crossed her ears are finally setting 🙈 I really appreciate your video!
Hi. I am about to get an Aussie pup in a few weeks. So far in photos ears look button (pup is ~ about 5 weeks old). When I get the pup should I start taping them regardless their shape at that time (even if they were still button when I get the puppy at 8 weeks old?), or do I wait until they would start acting "rosey" or start getting lifted? One of the parents has ears where the tips are folded forward and not to the side like rose ears, but they are folded higher and not fully folded over if that description makes any sense.... they fold correct direction but the tips don't fall low enough... Anyway, my question is when do I start folding?
Thank you for posting this. have some questions. My girl is 10 mos. Only one ear is rose and the other one is forward folding. Can I use the moleskin on one ear? Is she too old to do this? She swims a lot. Will the moleskin fall off? How long should it take to train the ear? Thx so much😊🐾
Hi, I love your videos! I have a 10 month old Aussie. We used this method to set her ears 4-8 months with a few breaks in between. Her ears are button if I place them in that position, but otherwise they usually go rose. Is there anything else that you would suggest or does this mean that they are set and she is merely just controlling them?
Thanks!! ☺️ At 10 months they are normally set but you could try this method for a tad longer and see if they stay. Try trimming all the ear hair on the inside next to their head out so it isn’t pushing the ear out. A lot of them go back and forth to rose which is normal. However if done properly, they should be button when looking forward at attention on their own.
Hello. Very usefull information on setting aussies ears. Would like to know if at 11 month it is would be too late to fix my aussies' ears. I did not know this was something that could be corrected... my aussie has only one ear that is not set and just thought that it was ok or cute on her till I watched your video.... please let me know if I should try to set it even at 11 months. Thanks.
We’ve done one round which last 2-3 weeks, worked great! They fell out naturally (and unfortunately brought most of the fur with it)… we are now having trouble gluing them back on the naked skin lol is there something we’re doing wrong or will it only adhere to the fur?
It should be adhering to the skin although it does stick to the hair way better. Try letting the glue dry a little longer before applying so it’s less runny. Or make the piece bigger to try to stick to any of the hair on the edges remaining
i just followed this tutorial and did this on my pup, i have a couple questions/concerns :) 1. is a little scratching/shaking normal? i just put them on about 30 minutes ago. 2. does the glue pull on their hair at all and cause pain? sorry, i’m just very anxious that i’m accidentally hurting him or going to make him dislike people touching his ears. any reassurance would be hugely appreciated
Scratching & shaking is definitely normal after every application, especially the first one. It does feel weird and new to them but I would expect this to stop after the first day. If they keep scratching at it after day 1, it may be irritating them due to a reaction to the glue so check for that. It does not pull on the hair or cause pain unless you physically pull on it. It’s similar to a bandaid where you really don’t feel it until it’s time to come off.
Hi, We have a 5 month old mini American shepherd and have used this method since she was 3 months old. The moleskin has stayed in for about 2 weeks each time and have been replaced within a couple of days. The ears go rose instantly when the moleskin comes of, is this expected? Should we just trust the process until they remain button? Great video 😁
If they go rose immediately, it probably isn't enough weight to begin with and this method might not be the best route. I'd suggest switching to glueing to the head
Hi! We have a 5 month Aussie who has one ear prick and the other button and we have tried this on his prick ear, after 3 weeks it came off and was sat perfectly but has now pricked again, what would be your advice for this? Is it too late to have 2 button ears? Thanks! Love you’re Aussie vids!
Hi from Australia. I have some non toxic fabric repair glue but it’s not tear mend. It says it’s permanent, do you think that would be the same kind of thing as tear mend?
I unfortunately have no idea and don’t want to suggest using something I’m not familiar with. 😣 I’d recommend reaching out to some breeders over there to see what they use
My puppy is 4 months old and about 25 pounds. I just used quarters for the first time. His ears seem almost too heavy? Like they’re laying forward but also very floppy on the side of his head. Is it possible to have it be too heavy? Thank you so much for this video!
This is a great alternative to glueing straight to their head especially with crazy siblings ! About how long does this last? And about how many times do you have to repeat it? Thanks !
It depends a lot based on how much they or siblings mess with it. It can be last days to weeks. And repeat it until when they fall out, the ear is folding forward. After a year old however it’s too late to change
I did the first Moleskin taping and it worked great except the glue remained on the ears. One ear tape fell off 3 days ago and 1 came off today. We bathed him and then I did alcohol on the remaining glue but it still didn’t come off. What do I need to do before I do the next taping? He needs it, the rose fold is already showing.
couple questions. we just got a new pup. one ear just started to stick up kind of overnight. when i hold it down it stays back down for a short period and then rises back up. his ears are super fluffy on the leather. would i shave this part of the ear or just put the glue and the mole skin over it. also, for the glue, is this something that eventually falls of the dog or do you need to take it off. if you need to take it off, how often should we being doing this and how would i do this (soap and water or do you have another suggestion)? THANK YOU in advanced!!!!
Leave the hair because the glue actually sticks better to that. Normally they fall out on their own but if it’s still in there at a month, remove it with alcohol or adhesive remover. Soap and water normally works well too since they tend to fall out after a bath.
No, but I do have some tips on our Instagram under the health highlight! If you can train them to withstand brushing everyday that is one option. I just feed mostly dry food and offer knuckle bones every so often and it keeps them white.
I have a 3 month Aussie that I used a quarter for the ear. I’m unsure if it’s too heavy. How do I determine this? If I need to switch the weight how easy is it to remove glue? Thank you for your video!
If it’s hanging drastically lower compared to the other ear, it’s probably too heavy but if it’s close to the same height a quarter is fine. I’ve found it pretty difficult to remove with fresh glue so I’d only remove if it’s really low
Hi, I have a pup that just turned 5 mos. Her ears were beautiful and button at 4 mos of age; however, over the last month, they have gotten more and more erect and now they seem “prick.” She is from an AKC breeder who’s dame and sire both had button ears that did not have to be set. Do you know why they would, over the past month, turn from button to prick? Do you think I should try this method since the change has been so recent? Thanks!
Hmmm this doesn’t sound normal to me. Prick ears are ears that stand straight up (like a corgi or German Shepherd) and such ears are genetic. It doesn’t make sense that two natural forward folds (which is extremely rare) would produce prick. Regardless, you can try to use this method for a few months and hopefully it works. If there is any lifting with the moleskin on, you will need to glue to the face instead as the weights are not working well enough.
Hi, I didn't know this was even a thing since I have my first aussie. She's 5 months old already but is still teething. Is it worth trying? Her ears are just folded at the tips and I'd love for them to be more like button ears!
You can try it but prick ears are more a genetic problem that most likely cannot be fixed like this. 4 months old is also pretty late to start but you can give it a shot!
I have a toy Aussie with pricked ears. They stand straight up. Her ears are super tiny though. Will this method work on her also? Or does it only work with dogs who have slightly risen ears?
My dogs ears often flip backwards with the moleskin in place. Do I need to change the length of the moleskin? Also this is our first go at this so we used a nickel. Ziggy is about 16 weeks old. Thank you
I have a 3 month old that has nice forward folding ears. However after playing with her brother yesterday, one of her ears isn’t laying flat down anymore unless I force it down. Should I wait to see if her ear returns to it’s normal position or should I do something like this with that ear?
@@sandollaraussies thanks for your reply. When can I see your show grooming video on Australian shepherd Top line and under neck. kindly let me know . Thanks 😊
How long should one application of the moleskin stay on? and until what age should you continue to apply this for? Our pup is 3.5 months and his ear just started going rose. thanks!
The duration can range from a few days to weeks which is all ok. Don’t leave it in longer than a month if it lasts that long. And you can keep going with it until they are button without moleskin. Some stubborn ears unfortunately never set and I’d say by 1 it’s not going to change.
My aussie just turned 6 months and I thought I should just give up, but according to your video we can fix it up to 8 months? Should I restart using them? I set his ears starting when he was 10 weeks and sometimes gave him a week break.
I wouldn’t give up yet! I’d keep trying through at least 8 months. I have a 7 month old now and one ear finally stayed folding right so there’s still hope 😉
Do you put more glue under the corners if they start coming off after a few days or just let it fall off naturally? How long should the goal be to keep a set on for? In the video you said your dog’s moleskin had been in for 1 or 2 weeks I believe?
Is this method worth doing if the puppy has semi prick ears? Folds at about half. Been doing this/taping for some weeks on and off and the ears stay down for a few hours when the moleskin falls off but goes up if she gets excited. Puppy is almost five months. Am I fighting a loosing battle?
Hello! I have a cheeweenie puppy 12 weeks 4Pounds. His ears use to fold down but now it’s off to the side like dobby. He’s still super cute but I’d prefer his ears to be folded. Would this technique work? Also should I use maybe a dime since he’s soo tiny?
Do you recommend this method for a puppy that has low set ears? I’m trying to decide between this method and the taco shape method. My puppy has low set ears, he is 5 months.
This method doesn’t make the earset lower but it also won’t lift it either. You can try for a higher ear set by glueing to the head at or above eye level.
Hello I’m having GREAT difficulty doing this method with my Aussie puppy. I think we have repeated this 4 times with his ears. They always start coming off (even with allowing the glue to set a bit more before applying it to the ear)😣 one of his ears is being all funky and I’m trying to fix it before I can’t. Any additional tips would be great!
How soon do they start coming off? My suggestions are to make sure you are cleaning really well with alcohol first, using glue that isn’t expired, and making the moleskin large enough where it sits on top of the hair (glue sticks best to hair and not just ear leather). If nothing is working, I’d suggest changing to glueing straight to the head
My pup just turned 5 months ago week or so ago and she had sticking up ears and we been doing when she was about 4 months. So is it to late at 6 months to continue the moleskin process if it falls out again ..?
If they are sticking straight up, that is very hard to fix. 6 months may not be too late if they were rose but in your case, I don't think this method is going to help.
My Aussie had to stay at my in-laws for 1 week right at 7 months and the ear set fell off during that time. I’ve been consistent since 4 months except that week but now at 7.5 months it keeps going rose when it falls off. Do you think it might have set during that week or is it possible it will still set button? It holds for a few hours in button before it goes back to rose.
I prefer this so that the ear remains loose like it naturally would which eliminates the risk of the ear getting caught on something or them ripping it loose. Also there is no visible hair loss or leftover glue from this method as it’s all on the inside of the ear as opposed to hair loss or glue on the face.
can you do this on a lab also? my labs ears are goin up rose ears, and want drooping ears she originally had. she just started teething so maybe this is why but want to fix her ears. would you recommend nickels for 11 wks old and 10 lbs? thanks!!!!!! xo
My boy is about to turn 3 months, should I not use a quarter and use a nickel instead maybe? One of the ears pin forward and the other stays rose. It's an interesting combo but I am hoping to keep them pinned forward.
Hi can you help me to address some questions. I applied to my puppy the first set I put a dime in them because my puppy is small so a quarter would be huge for her little ears. Do the coins hurt them when they shake her ears/head? How long they last? Can I bath my puppy or they will fall if I give her a bath? Thank you for the tutorial I hope it works, she is 5 months old. ❤
It doesn’t hurt when they shake or else they would stop shaking I’m sure. 😅 I would avoid getting the area wet when you give a bath because it does seem to fall out easier when wet
Hi, I have a 19 week old Toy mini Aussie, He is starting to look like a Chihuahua because his ears are so big for his little body.He has them straight up about half of the time, when there down they look great. Will this method work to keep them down where they should be?
Straight up (prick ears) is hard to correct. This is unfortunately due to genetics and might not be able to fix. I don’t have experience with toy Aussies but you can try this method and see if it works.
@@sandollaraussies Ok Thank you for your help, He just wont leave it alone, To bad be cause with an nickel in each ear he looks so much more like an Aussie.
So I had previously glued my 13week Aussies ears to his head before finding your video. And they have come unglued and for 24hours they stayed in position but this morning they sometimes want to rose sometimes stay correct. I guess my question is would you recommend I use this method and glue again ?
Also how do the quarters come into play? You glue on top of the moleskin or under the moleskin on the ear? Like dont glue the quarter to the ear but have it in-between the ear and the moleskin and glue the moleskin to the ear
How I wish I’d known this months ago. My 8 mo. old Aussie has stand up ears that tip at the top like a Collie so today I started this process. I’ve understand it’s probably not going to change her ears at all but I feel need to try. She’s not a breeding or show dog but I really don’t like the stand up ears so what are other options if this doesn’t make a difference.
This is such a great video thank you!! I followed your instructions and set my 13 week old puppy’s ears today. It went well! In your experience how many times do you redo it if you start at 3 months of age like I did?
It greatly varies! On Turbo I only had to reset maybe twice on one ear but on Panda I had to constantly redo both ears up until 7 months. Some ears are just more stubborn than others!
@@sandollaraussies Interesting thanks! I can tell my pup’s right ear is more stubborn than her left. Have you ever massaged the ears with glycerin when not being set? I read about this and did it before your method but wondering if it actually does anything. Also, what age do you usually start setting their ears with your method?
I haven’t done massaging just because I think it’s more annoying to them to have to sit there for it. Lol I start the moleskin when they are teething as soon as the ears start to go rose
@@sandollaraussies That makes sense haha! And perfect thanks I’m right on track then! Sorry one last question! If you take a break from the moleskin for a week would it prevent the ears from being Button at maturity? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Once the moleskin falls out, if it goes between button and rose, you could give it a few days but put the moleskin back in. If it immediately goes to rose, I would wait no more than a day before reapplying. A week would be pushing it and you may risk the cartilage setting like that.
My MAS is a year and a half and I wasn’t consistent with taping so his ears are all over the place. Sometimes they are button sometimes rose. I’m still going to attempt to glue and see what I can do. Have you ever seen it work past 8 months?
I did something like that and used same glue but won’t come off at all. I used baby oil but don’t work. Can you please give me advice. It’s been more than week. Stick like a rocks. I might put too much glue idk.
Hi there, I noticed you had a dime in the video… Do you use a dime first and as I get older you use the quarter? And does it fall off on its own or do I remove it periodically? Thanks.
Yes the coin depends on how big the ear is and how much weight it needs. Normally it falls off on its own but if it’s in there a month it should be taken out
First of all greetings from Serbia! I have to ask for your opinion, do you think I can do this to my American Staffordshire Terrier, because I don’t like rose ears and I want her to have button shape ears?
I would think so but I have zero experience with that breed. Although the same would apply that you need to start as a puppy. After 1 year old, it’ll be too late
Hi! I want to set my puppy’s ears but I’m so worried that he might be allergic to the glue or something, is there any way to see if he’s allergic before setting his ears? 😊
You can use a thin padding with a coin in between two sheets like I did or one layer without a coin of the thick padding but depending on the ear, the thick padding won’t be enough weight.
I just applied the moleskin with pennies to my pups ears and am now nervous about him eating it if it happens to fall off during the night. Is this something that happens frequently? It’s glued pretty securely but wondering if anyone has any advice on this?
Most of my dogs just chew or play with the moleskin but don’t ingest the coin. There is a risk with coin toxicity so if they do happen to ingest it, you should call your vet and see what they recommend!
I did this a few days ago, but one of my girl’s ears keeps getting flipped backwards and the quarter keeps it “stuck” on occasion. Will this still work if the ears are down most of the time, or do you think I should glue the ears to the sides of her face to prevent them from getting flipped backwards?
@@sandollaraussies The problem is she’s already 6 months. But we were waking up to her coming out of her crate with her one ear flipped backwards, so we decided to go a different route with gluing to ensure they stayed down. Appreciate the response though!
and my aussie is 1 year old. can i still do it? her ears arent same.. one is down and one is a little upward.. and how do u remove it? is what i want to know also
So I’ve been applying this to my Aussie’s ears since she was 3 1/2 months. She’s now 7 1/2 mo. and they STILL have not set. How long should I keep putting them on before I give up?
Yikes 😔 some never do unfortunately since this method isn’t as rigid as others. You can keep going up to a year to be sure. I had one that took around 7-8 months and I’ve seen others keep up with it for a little longer
They should fall out on their own and it will vary between a few days to a few weeks. After a month, you should remove them and put a new set in if need be. You can remove with alcohol or adhesive remover.
How can the moleskin be removed since you're using glue in the example? Or will it come off by itself, and if so after what period? Thanks for the information!
It will come off by itself and just depends on how well it was set and if the dog messes with it. Can be a few days up to a few weeks. You can use alcohol or some people have had success with adhesive remover.
