How to set basic toe in on a Tri Five Chevy

This is a very basic method for setting toe-in on a Tri Five or any vehicle to get you in the ballpark to drive the vehicle to a frame and alignment shop for a correct alignment. In the case of this '55 Chevy, the steering linkage had been removed and a temporary steering bar was needed to be able to roll the car, lock the front wheels together instead of acting independently. I will check for desired toe-in, measure the distance from steering knuckles or steering arms and build a temporary steering bar. This will allow the car to roll and turn while keeping the front wheels locked together and tracking correctly.

That’s a great idea for a temp tie rod, I remember when I built my 55 years ago it was a pain trying to move the car while the front end was apart. Nicely done.👍

It work's great for me because I can keep it and it will work for all of my tri fives. Thanks for watching!

Hey there Hubbie, great video man! I've done this for years to get it close enough to take it to Bybee's Alignment Shop downtown and it gets you really close.

Yep, that is how I have done it in the past to get it close enough to drive to Dave's Frame and Alignment in Huntington Beach. He is one of the rare guys around here who still does the old cars. This one just needed the bar to lock the front tires together to move it around. I hope to be doing the frame/ suspension restoration on this one soon! Thanks for watching! I am looking forward to your upcoming Ford Gasser build and what you do with that 010 350 Chevy!

Hey Jeff! Man all I can see is straight axle when I see that pipe going from side to side. That's the bump steer Set up for a straight axle. I always enjoy the video's man! Have a good one Buddy 👍

For sure Don! Both of my Gasser Builds just happen to be SBC A-Arm builds because that was what both cars were when they ran back in the day. I want to keep them both exactly as they were. I still keep thinking it would be great to build a "Hot Wheel" Gasser with a straight axle, nose high with a blown big block sticking through the hood! 3 gassers may be too much for me....we'll see. Uncle Tony's Garage just did a great video about Muscle Car Evolution - How Chevrolet Made it to the Top and Stayed There. He really gave kudos to the Tri-Five and mentions the bump steer configuration successes from Chevy. With Tony being a former magazine tech adviser/editor and die hard Mopar Fan, it really was great what he had to say and worth the watch. Thanks for watching, stay warm and take care!

I did the best I could doing what you did but with the straight axle. Still have the passenger side off a little bit as it's showing abnormal wear pattern. Going to try unhooking everything then checking my measurements. I don't know anyone around here who does frontend alignment on straight axles. Maybe a large truck shop 🤔?

Yes, this just puts you in the ballpark to get it to the alignment shop. I have never had or ever done a straight axle. Some of the Tri-Five Forums or even the Facebook Tri-Five Gasser pages might have guys who would share how they did theirs. I have an old school guy here in So. Cal that does most everything and if he can't, he would know who could. His name is Dale at Dave's Frame and Alignment in Huntington Beach, Ca. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
