I bought one, thought about it, and replaced a fallen sound post on my first try. Amazingly simple but effective tool, highly recommended because it works!
This tool saves you tremendous time and allows you to set the post right the first time with very little adjustment needed afterwards. I've used it on many hundreds of violins. Best of all, you don't need to jab the sound-post making a mark on it. I do however recommend making a mark with lead to check that the angle is right during and after setting. Thanks for inventing this Karol. :)
Tip: Buy some insulation shrinkwrap (the rubber kind for insulating electronic wires) and put it around the metal bar part of the tool. It prevents that painful feeling when you accidentally jerk the tool and bump metal against the wood.
I have the " VS-PRO 2 + ". It is the best tool yet to re-set the Sound Post. I have been searching for the technical part of the job. Some recommend setting the SP at 2 to 3 mm from the bridge. Others at 5 mm. Is setting the Sound Post at 8 mm not recommended or simply forbidden ? Is there a ratio of setting the SP at a certain distance from the bridge and certain tightness amount to lock the SP between the top and back of the violin ? Actually my SP is at 8 mm and the the SP is held only by the tensions of the A and E strings. I like the sound, ringing tone etc. Is is correct at 8 mm from the bridge. ? Thank you for your advice.
Looks good to me, I'm in. I've got a gauge on the way 'cause my sound post is useless it's so far off. Know where I can get cedar sound post dowel blanks man? Well I'm back to eBay to buy your nifty tool.
This man's voice sounds like Ivan Galamian. WOW! Just look at Joshua Bell when he's being tutored by the master himself and you will see what i am talking about.
I used to do this with a pair of plastic forks that I broke the tines off of, and then used a round file to make post-sized notches in them. And they worked, after a fashion, after a while. It was about as natural as scratching your head with your kneecap. Gimme real tools anyway, boy.
Blanks are available on Ebay or our internet store The website is included at the end of description below video. You can open full description while video is running.
