Setting the hook is a process that varies depending on the situation. Seth Feider shares how he sets the hook while flipping grass. Hitting a flipping fish hard on the hookset is fun and all, but depending on your setup, it can cause you to lose more fish.

As Seth explains, most of the time, your line will be wrapped amongst the grass you are fishing. By removing the slackline, it gives you a better sense of where the fish is inside the grass, as well as a more direct path to the fish. Another big piece of your hookset is your rod, reel, line setup. With today's technology, it takes less energy to drive a hook home. If you overpower a hookset, it may lead to a missed opportunity.
Hooksets will differ from person to person and even bait to bait. That is why knowing your setup, as well as your own power, can be crucial to hooking and landing more fish.

I've been fishing hard going on 3 years now. Buying all equipment from scratch. My hook set is like Seth's in that I dont swing for the fences like I see 80% of people do. Take up slack, snap your wrist, or a long side swing hook set and lean back into it. I rarely lose fish doing that. I also prefer lighter gauge wire, high quality hooks. Doing so makes a smaller hole in their mouth, when they start giving headshakes, it's harder for them to throw the hook when you havent made a giant hole in their mouth to start... and getting the hook out is usually a chore in itself

Thanks for sharing -- others should find your refined system interesting. We also like the fact that the smaller hooks are easier on fish. Jacob Wheeler shares some similar hook sentiments in these two videos (Carolina and Texas rigging): -Carolina Rig 101 | How to Rig and Fish with Jacob Wheelerru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LSUcMtyJN44.html -5 Tips to Catch More Bass Using Texas-Rigged Worms: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-THvQvsBzir0.html

I definitely like 7ft. Medium Heavy’s as well, don’t need broomsticks for everything. When the hook up to land ratio is excellent, why change...

anybody else notice his reel handles are on the correct side for a right handed angler. Still dont know why the majority does that silly hand swap cast business.

I use a spinning rod with my right hand, and cast with my right hand. I use a baitcaster with my left hand, and cast with my left hand. Really nothing wrong with it. It's all personal preference.

Love a good left handed reel
@tinman6514
@tinman6514 3 года назад
Because most people want to both pitch and reel with their dominant hand... Florida flippers were notorious for doing that so they just switched to left hand reel so they didn’t have to switch hands... They figured it was easier to learn to reel with their non-dominant hand than learn to pitch with it. It’s best to learn how to pitch and flip with both hands because it will come in handy if you fish enough... But not switching hands is the way to go 99% of the time because most bites come as the lure is falling and you’ll miss bites as you’re switching hands...

Any tips or videos I should check out for learning to flip? Got the gear and tackle just waiting on spring. I'm normally a crankbait, worm, bladed jig and finesse fisherman. Going to drive me nuts fishing slower but seen so many catching the big girls flipping and pitching.

Go to a pond and practice, and pitch into a small cup when you’re at home. It’s a feel thing, but a video or two can give you an idea. Come summer, it’s typically the best way to catch them from sun-up to sun-down.

Does Seth change his drag when using the flouro leader to prevent all the shock from the no stretch braid?
@nickkovalenko2891

I'd like to know this too
@TripleAstyle1
@TripleAstyle1 4 года назад
Doubt it. Still uses heavy line, letting the drag work is counterproductive to his hook set.... simply set the hook with less force which is controlled by you vs letting a mechanical drag try to offset for your hookset.

@Catherine Tinny but he is flipping heavy weeds like we have here with an FG knot. So do I loosen my drag or not?
@chasingthefish9042
@chasingthefish9042 4 года назад
Shock can be mitigated by reeling down tight. I use the same braid to fluorocarbon if I pop them slack line I end up snapping off more. If that's something you are worried about using a mono for your leader it will absorb that shock. With that I would upsize the line on weight over fluoro.
