Glad to hear/see you got some decent hardware finally and that you're getting rid of Spectrum. They're (Time Warner) by far the most unethical company in the US and one of globally, and I'd know as I provide solutions for just about all of them. FYI - the handoff is only rough when you're set up wrong. I think you probably are. Two is probably overkill for that house so try moving them as far away from each other as possible or removing one. Also, congrats on the new house and more so in becoming a Dad! You've got many years of the most important and rewarding job in the world ahead! Enjoy them to their fullest because they go faster than you can imagine.

I appreciate the "let's stop and play with the baby" moments so much, that's precious. I hope I have a chance to do that in a video some day. I think your networking box looked pretty good when you finished with it. And that AP mounting job was good too. Here's a tip for drilling, though: If you don't apply as much pressure and let the drill bit do the work, it can be easier on you and give you a better hole. Plus, once the bit breaks thru, it'll go straight thru, and you can pull it back out without reversing the drill's direction or stopping the drill. Plus it reduces heat buildup, which can be bad for some materials. Oh, and I'd recommend investing in a small table vise if you're doing things like that enough, those things are great, and you can get them for cheap online.

Your home network box is the same size as mine. Mine however is packed with a modem , a ruckus switch for POE, a smart things hub, a z-wave hub, a kevo plus hub and a ring hardwire doorbell camera. I also have a bunch of cat6 wires running to the ruckus switch and my wireless router which sits on a shelf with another 10 port switch. And to top it off I have a cloud connected as well. I really wish new home builders would make these network boxes larger and with shelves for components. Nice video! Thumbs up and I subscribed!

Make sure to adjust your RSSI on the AP's to aid in the AP Roaming (Hand Off). For a home of that size with 2 Nano's I would suggest an RSSI of around -70 to -75 dbm. Also you will want to adjust your AP channels for wireless. For 2.4 ghz you only have 3 clean channels (1,6,11) that have no overlap so I would suggest you go on either end of the spectrum so one AP 2.4 on channel 1 at low to medium broadcast strength and the other on channel 11 at low to medium broadcast strength. I would advise using the ubiquity wifi man app on your phone to perform a wireless scan so you can see what channels are being broadcasted from your neighbors to avoid overlapping channels. As far as 5 ghz i suggest you use the DFS channels (52,56,60,64,100,104,108,114,136,140,144) as most consumer routers and isp routers don't support them so you would avoid channel interference from your neighbors.

Several things: 1. Be sure to turn the power lower (you don't wan't APs to talk over each other). 2. You should set up a server for the UniFi controller software or buy a controller. The controller will help with the handoff as well I believe. 3. The security gateway you bought won't be capable of 1gbps with many features turned on (if that's what you're going for).

Great job man. I worked in commercial networking for a year and a half and installed a bunch of those ubiquiti waps. To get them flush on a ceiling we wouldn't even put an outlet box there for the cable, just a hole big enough for the cable to pass through. That way your mounting bracket can go right on the ceiling

I bought a Ubiquiti network setup about 6 months ago because my netgear nighthawk just couldn't handle my home server and all the pcs and game consoles in my house. I am not dissapointed, this is by far the best network setup I have ever used (and I worked for xbox networking support for 5 years). I haven't had to reboot once, I run my plex server 24/7, a website and all my pcs and consoles no problem at all. No regrets, the best setup you can get in your home.

Greg, IT pro here. Just an FYI, consumer grade equipment like Ubiquiti Unifi products like you have, don't command devices to do hand offs. The devices themselves choose which access point to affiliate with. A more complex controller would manage all of that but unifi does not. What you want to do to improve your 'hand-offs' is reduce the power of your APs so that they are less likely to hang on to an access point while you're closer to another one. Also, be sure to configure each AP to be on its own channel (my Unifi network did this automatically, but if your neighbors have strong networks in the area on the same channel, you may get interference). You can actually get a free tool from Microsoft called WiFi Analyzer that makes this a lot easier. Cheers!

I've setup quite a few Ubiquiti APs over the years and they've been pretty rock solid with few issues. As for hand-offs I've found it's usually device specific. I've found the more "premium" Android devices tend to deal with hand-offs fine. iOS devices tend to be hit or miss such as iPhone 7 & 8 can be stubborn while their Plus variants work fine. Congrats on the new house btw!

So, after 4 months of using the ubiquiti networking, how do you like it so far, hopefully it was easy to setup, i also noticed and played a little with the software, the channel width for the 2.4ghz, higher number = faster speed lower = futher range same with the 5Ghz, higher number is faster etc, it is in the config of the acsess point itself

If you did not run the RF scan make sure you run that. That handles most handle off issues, It should also be run ever so often in you notice additional wifi networks in the area. I got two network at work. One for employees one for guest. With three access points each. When I first setup before i ran the scan there were issue with handoffs. Once i ran the RF scan on all access points i got no complaints and have noticed no issue. Even notice better coverage in the building.

Taught myself networking, too. I had it easier, though. My basement is nice and open and I was able to easily route my own Cat6 all over the house, mostly with items sourced off eBay. Found out the hard way that Home Depot is a ripoff. Found a 100' drop of cable from someone selling their excess for under $30, and bulk terminals were a lot cheaper, too. Did get a relatively affordable 8-port switch and the crimping tool off Amazon.

Hey Greg, If you are having Hand-off issues, you need to tune your AP's in the unifi Controller. The Power Settings on the unifi are basically ON (100%) by default, and thats not always the best, may want to lower down to 35-45% and tune from their.. range of One AP should Barely overlap the other AP's

I have a question. A lot of people have been using multiple access points in homes, and I have always been a guy who buys one strong router and places it in the middle of my home. If the home is too big, I understand the use of multiple access points as a MESH network. So how does a device (like a phone) decide which access point to connect to? And then, if you walk around your home with your phone, wouldn't it technically lose internet connection when switching from one access point to the other? For example, what if I was using whatsapp to make a video call and walking around my house, when the phone switches to another node, wont the call cut out for a few seconds?

Well, if you mean normal consumer wifi routers, this is much better, even just for the fact that the wifi is closer to where it actually needs to be rather than in a enclosed area which probably isnt in the best place in the house for wifi. The usg although it doesn't have the best control compared to something like pfsense, still is much better than most if not all consumer routers in terms of what you can do with them(one example being vlans)

Unifi makes good stuff. Both the hardware and software are excellent in my experience, and even their most affordable gear seems like enterprise grade stuff. I haven't tried the USG though -- I currently like OPNsense (or pfSense) in that role. You can run OPNsense/pfSense in a VM on your NAS box (unRaid, FreeNAS under ESXi, whatever you've got) which saves a bit of space and power. But if the USG suits your needs that's great. The setup is definitely easier with the USG and it's convenient to manage your whole network with 1 web interface. Thanks for the video.

Hey Greg, great video setting up the network. Now that you’ve had the nano system for 5 months. Can you tell me how your handoffs have been? What about when you’re outside? I also have a 2 story house about the same size and really interested in making this my network. Thanks!

Is it me or do you seem to always run into issues when setting up your networks? I remember you ran into a weird issue last time that required some creative thinking just like this time. Personally I think it adds to the video because instead of "another typical install most of us have seen before" you turned it into a DIY type video that can really be helpful even to people who have done a hundred installs but never ran into that issue before. Thanks for putting this video out there and keep the great content coming. :)

Are you still rocking the ubiquity gear?

Greg, with Spectrum Internet and if you have the updated modem I'm hoping your running Cat6e Cable for your hardlines. It makes all the difference. I learned it the hard way upgrading from Cat5. And yes I have Spectrum Internet in Ohio.

2 muffins on the stove, 2 oranges, 2 bananas, I'm noticing a trend in Greg's items - was that a second cat?

Love my Ubiquiti setup. It has been very solid and great WiFi coverage. Though, I'd be interested to try the new Dream Machine when I setup a new home network for my dad. That looks better than the USG speed wise and it has a built in controller.

BTW, Willie Howe and Crosstalk Solutions have great RU-vid videos on getting UniFi gear setup.

In your studio tour video you said you had a 9900k at 5GHZ cooled with a Dark rock 4 cooler, if possible i wanted to know what your set vcore, cache frequency, and cache voltage are currently

What about rural living. I have zero high speed ISP options. And currently use a WISP provider for my service. Fiber connection is way to far to even try that route. So how can I get or create a better connection at my home? I'm paying 99 a month for shit speeds.

Look into Starlink. If it lives up to the hype, it should offer very reasonable download/upload speeds.

I am actually in the process of installing one of their networks at home too. the only thing i would recommend is instead of getting the USG, get the dream machine instead. you lose a few features for remote deployment management, however the UDM is MUCH more powerful from a IDS/IPS perspective. you will get much more throughput with those features enabled than the USG.

Yeah he should get a UDM, only downsides is that the way his overhead cables are run it wouldn't really make sense.
