The dry dropper rig is our absolutely favorite way to fly fish! You not only have the chance to catch a fish on a dry fly, but you can also fish a nymph under the water's surface... at the same time!! This rig is super effective in a variety of different fly fishing situations. If you are a beginner just starting out, or an experienced angler looking to add a new fly fishing rig to the tool belt, definitely give this a try. You will need a dry fly, nymph, fly line, leader, and tippet to make this rig work. Grab your fly box, and let's learn how to set up the dry dropper rig.

As someone that has taken a few years off from fly fishing and now back in Utah, these help so much. Rather people want to admit it or not, its intimidating because you dont want look stupid around others. These help me a ton on gaining confidence on tying stuff and set ups. The rest I guess is reading hatch reports and just getting out there. I wish people did videos on navigating that first step to actually going out on water and not being scared of taking that first step to just getting out there. For me, I always get nervous and thoughts of: Is going to be super crowded? Do I walk? Do I wade? Can I kayak? and so many others. Maybe I should start a RU-vid page for ultra beginners. Thanks for the vids

You bet! Yeah, you gotta just get out on the water sometimes, and that can be the hardest part!

A bigger nymph, go to a hopper dropper or some other high floating foam bug. If fishing for bass a popper will also work great.

Is it a nylon leader to the dry fly then floro tippet going to the nymph ?!

Any "go to" combos of dry / nymph that you pair? I think I saw your nymph was the Prince :) couldn't tell the dry you were using (elk hair caddis maybe?). Or is the sky the limit for combinations? (I just so happen to have a 40-fly Essential Collection from a fantastic fly company...so I have LOTS to chose from! :> )

Dries - Parachute Adams/BWO/Purple Haze/PMD, Chubby Chernobyl, Any kind of terrestrial. Nymphs - Prince, Pheasant tail, Hares Ear, Frenchie, Zebra Midge. Haha love to hear it! Let us know how it goes out there on the water!

Much respect to you friend, but you don't have to worry about your dry sinking if you up the size or tie on a more buoyant fly. I've personally tied on 2 or more nymphs under the dry and have had no issues with sinking or bad drifts. A dry dropper is the most effective cast-intensive method for trout (excluding euro), the last thing you want to do is add a bobber to a rig if you can help it.

Yup. Good call on going for a bigger dry as needed. The dry double dropper is great!

But euro nymphing is boring,tiring, destroys the casting hand...

@@aljosadjuricic5097 Agreed, that's why I don't do it.

should you not use tippet between the end of the leader and the dry fly? I didn't know you could tie to dry fly straight to the leader
@austinmc2112

The end of the leader he is using tapers down to tippet

will this work with a barbless fly?
@RickBenejamin
@RickBenejamin 9 месяцев назад
Yes. You can also tie the dropper tippet through the dry fly hook eyehole along with your leader--works either way
@venturesflyco
@venturesflyco 9 месяцев назад
Yes. But you’ll have to keep good tension during a fish fight. It’s unlikely to come off the hook, but does happen on occasion. Might be better to go with a tag end (triple surgeon’s knot, then cut one of the tags, tie the fly to the other).
